Terminator 4 Release

When is the Terminator 4 release? Well buddy I thought I knew, but I was way off. Apparently the new film is set to hit theaters in May 22, 2009! The good news is that it is this year. The better news is that the deal that was made with the movies new producers. Apparently Warner Bros has a new trilogy lined up focusing on the adult John Conner and the actual battle between the humans and skynet.

So we get another 3 movies to feast our eyes on. Christian Bale is the adult Conner and the new terminator is the unheralded Sam Worthington. This is the only worry I have for the new series. Worthington could really lose something in replacing Arnold. He seems to fit the mold of a Robert Patrick from T2. It shouldn't be to big a deal, though, since Bale seems like the perfect cast for the adult Conner, also I don't think Bale would settle for a B grade movie so it should be a solid film (maybe Batman like?). So we'll see what happens, but at least we know that if the first one does reasonably well, we will get 2 more.

Say Yes to Yes Man

Because I had nothing to do last night, I asked a few friends if they wanted to go do something. While most ignored me, I did manage to get over the theatre, and see the movie yes man. I just want to share that it was well worth the money, and I will highly recommend it.

For those of you that have seen the previews you pretty much know the basis of this movie. There is this guy Carl (Carey) that doesn't want to commit to anything. He's afraid that once he says yes to something he will get too emotionally attached to it, and it will leave his life forever.

He meets an old friend, who tells him to go to a motivational speaker that helps people with whatever is going on. Basically Carl gets stuck with a "convenient" that says he must say yes to everything or he breaks a promise to himself, which is a very bad thing.

He leaves the convention debating whether to do it or not, but when a homeless man asks for a ride to the park he gives him one. The man uses up his phones battery, then carl runs out of gas, and is force to walk all the way do the hill where he runs into a girl that he later asks out.

I won't go any farther than that, for you need to see the rest yourself. When I saw that Jim Carey was acting in my 1st reaction was "I'd rather not." The reason for this, was that Ace Ventura made me look at him as a complete idiot, though I will say that after see this, I've changed my mind. He is a very good comedian, and I plan on going to see this movie at least one more time.

This movie is not for young kids. There is a lot of humor that I would consider questionable, however, I think as long as you don't get offend easily its well worth your money. There is a bit of nudity, and the language is bad at times. For storyline, humor, and worth your money I give this a 5/5. Go see it.

My Top Five Favorite Movies

5. Disturbia

Starring Shia Labeouf as a boy who assaults his teacher and is put under house arrest for three months. To make the time go by faster he starts spying on his neighbors. Pretty soon he realizes that the strange man who lives next door is a cold blooded killer. The movie is a combination of a laid back story of a girl and guy, and a heart pounding horror movie. It's number five on my list of favorite movies.

4. The Long Green Line

Starring York, Illionois' boy's cross country team, The Long Green Line is the story of a group of high schoolers working for what they want. Coached by Joe Newton, the team had won 24 state titles. In the movie they're going for their 25th state title. Everything seems like it's on track until two of the top seven runners are kicked off the team, and the two top runners get sick. It's a very inspiring movie, as it shoes many underdogs coming up and doing things that everybody told them they couldn't.

3. Ocean's Eleven

Starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon and many other stars. This remake movie is about a group of people who come together with one common goal: To rob one of the largest casinos in Las Vegas. Each member of the group has their own reason for doing it, wether it's money, revenge, or just sheer adrenaline. If you're looking for a thriller with a great ending, this is the one to see.

2. Eight Mile

The story of rap artist Eminem, Eight Mile is an amazing movie. It combines aspects of the under-dog theme with modern day music in Detroit. "B Rabbit" as he was originally called lives with his mom and young sister in a trailer park. When the news comes that they're getting evicted, it's up to Rabbit to strike it big. Even under the pressure of racism and poverty, he does just that.

1. Forrest Gump

Not a very original choice as my favorite movie, but I honestly think that this is the greatest movie ever made. Tom Hank's acting as a dumb man from Alabama who makes the most of his bad circumstances is phenomenal. The movie covers many historical events, from the Civil Rights Movement to the Beatles craze. Forrest Gump delivers crying moments, jumping moments, and above all, laughing moments. No matter who you are you can relate to this movie.

Star Wars: A Review

Star wars is a great movie. it feels like everytime you watch it something new happens. But why does it say in the beginning of the movie "along time ago in a galaxy far far away" if star wars is more advanced that the earth. It has robots and cars that use no wheels.like i said before its very interesting to watch over and over again. Why would anakin go to the dark side because of his true love. he thought the dar side would help save her. But that didnt work. While anakin was being fixed because of the lava incident.

She dies giving birth to anakins kids. But yet he stays with the dark side. Also when anakin was having nightmares about his mom being in pain. she was still alive till he came. So if he stayed away from her she might've lived a little longer.Shouldnt anakin get a hear cut instead of putting his har into a pony-tail, now thats just wrong. But dont think the movie is boring. But space balls was a funny form of star wars. now thats fun to watch over and over again. To end this review im gonna say star wars is the greatest classical movie to ever been made. so when you have the time i recommend watching any star wars form of movies.

Star Trek vs. Star Wars

Although some may feel comparing Star Wars with Star Trek is like comparing Han Solo with James T. Kirk, I feel it is like comparing Ewoks with Andorian Brandy. I have enjoyed both franchises over the years, but, I do have my own biases concerning these two phenomenons. Both have their place in this world and both hold special meanings for me. However, one of them holds a bigger place in my heart. I see one as a Science Fiction Fantasy that conveys complex spiritual beliefs, and the other as a Science Fiction manifesto for a possible future.

In spite of their differences, some still debate which franchise is best. Some pose the question "If you could only have one, would you choose Star Trek or Star Wars?". I personally would not want to live in a world where I am forced to make that choice. Monogamy in a relationship is fine, but in entertainment it's rather stupid. However, if I did have to make that choice there would be a clear winner without hesitation on my part. In looking at why these two science fiction franchises should not be compared in a "which is better" contest I will also attempt to rationalize my bias toward one of them.

Star Wars: From Old Religions and Spaghetti Westerns, A New Spirituality Emerges

George Lucas's Star Wars, although it attempts to portray its' universe in shades of gray, remains strongly black and white. At its' core it is a "good vs evil" morality play, which places it in the category of most films, protagonists and antagonists interacting for our entertainment and moral enhancement. Films in the Star Wars franchise have excellent visuals, effective plots, and good dialog. Still these films are basic fantasy.

What some may feel makes Star Wars films special, is the underlaying complex spiritual themes throughout the series. These spiritual themes are pretty much taken from various Eastern belief systems of the past, but, are run through the good vs evil filter of Judeo-Christian sensibilities. Similar to many Spaghetti Westerns, there were clear "good guys" and "bad guys" and within each was a tiny bit of opportunity for the other. "The Force" could be used for good or evil. There were clear "sides". However, just like many Spaghetti Westerns, this strong definition, to me, feels labored, and unrealistic. Although some people may find comfort in thinking the real world is cut and dry, that people are either good or evil, I do not believe it is that simple.

Star Wars is purely an archetypal tale that has been told over and over again in various mediums. These tales have their place and fulfill some intrinsic need in humans to be sure. For me, Star Wars is nothing more than entertainment, as I personally don't feel the need to adopt a spirituality of Taoism filtered through Judeo-Christian sensibilities. I hope most people only view Star Wars as entertainment as the world needs far less myopia in spirituality and the message of "The Force" to me seems like a breeding machine for spiritual myopia.

Star Trek: A Vision of A Possible Future. Beam Me Up Scottie!

If we look purely at individual story lines in Star Trek we will often find some archetypal references just like we do in Star Wars or any other work of fiction. However, Star Trek has offered us far more than the archetypal tales of most fiction. Gene Roddenberry, in creating Star Trek gave the world an evolving blueprint for a possible future. Roddenberry's vision in Star Trek was so pure that even those writers who have attempted to stray from it have not been able to do so effectively. Star Trek points to what Humanity can evolve into and what type of universe we can create. Star Trek is a vision of hope, a vision of self determination. The addition of "The Prime Directive" within the series, cements Star Trek as a force that promotes tolerance and diversity as long as people continue to be entertained and enlightened by its' visionary tales. Just imagine how great our world would be now if some explorers in the past would have had The Prime Directive to follow. Those that did follow that type of thinking on their own helped humanity advance and the ones who did not follow that type of thinking hindered us greatly.

Over the years Star Trek has communicated very complex concepts to a mass audience in entertaining ways. These concepts have ranged from social issues to quantum physics. Star Trek has inspired Scientists and Inventors the world over. Many new theories and products have came about as a direct result of their creator watching Star Trek when they were young. Star Trek has had a tremendous impact on the entire planet and the evolution of Humanity. Star Trek has most likely had more impact on the world than any other entertainment franchise. This impact on the world has been a positive one.

So, Which is Better?

The Star Trek Universe is one that I would love to live in. The Star Wars Universe when I really exam its' core spiritual themes leaves me more depressed than I feel after reading a Philip K. Dick novel. The question of which of these two franchises as entertainment is better is down to a matter of personal taste. The question of which of these two franchises has had more of a positive impact on the world is clear. Star Trek is the overall winner in my opinion because it has offered the world more than just entertainment or a morality lesson.

The only other entertainment franchises that have even come close to offering the world what Star Trek has would be The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. Star Wars vs Star Trek aside, I would even go so far as the say that Star Trek is the best entertainment franchise of all time because of the positive impact it has made on the world, a statement I make based on my personal values. I could live in a world where The Star Wars films were not made. I would not want to live in a world where the Star Trek vision did not exist.
You may be thinking that Star Trek is my all time favorite show, but that title goes to The Beverly Hillbillies and Prospero's Books, is my favorite movie. In the end it's all just a matter of how ones' personal tastes and values balance.

Hitman

I'm not sure if I liked it or not. My brother-in-law saw it and said it was great, and ordinarily I'd trust his opinion about a flick like this, but there was something missing. Not that it didn't have its moments; I'd still recommend it to someone looking for a quick action fix.

First the good points: the tone of the video game was captured brilliantly (largely due to the extensive use of the game's soundtrack,) and there were some reasonable action sequences. Let's be honest here; who doesn't enjoy a mindless assassination movie? Olyphant did a pretty good job portraying Agent 47. His movement was rigid and calculated - which isn't really Oscar worthy acting, but it mirrored the game well enough. When you've got an iconic look like 47's black suite and red tie you're bound to succeed in recreating a character. The Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat movies failed in this regard - perhaps because those characters were wearing costumes that don't translate into outfits that you'd find in reality.

Oh, and the kids playing Hitman in the hotel when 47 is running from the Russian secret police? Love it. It's always refreshing when a movie or show is consciously self-referential.

Now for the bad parts.

“How will I find you?”

“Don't worry, I'll find you.”

Really? Come on. I will grant that the screenwriter might have been playing off the stereotypes of his genre, but hackneyed lines like that are so overused. It's like throwing declawed felines on a rust-covered chalkboard. Maybe the point was to be hokey, but the movie could have garnered more respect.

In fact, the entire tone of the movie was cookie-cutter, down to the obligatory love interest. “Shut up or I'll gag you,” says 47. “Oh you,” she smiles to herself. Though I did enjoy the unnecessary nude scenes.

The sword fight on the subway was a great idea. I don't know if there wasn't enough space, or time to practice, or proper choreography, or perhaps they just wanted to try something “creative,” but the way that they shot that scene just ruined that great idea. It was stomach wrenching how they sped up the film to hurry the pace of the fighting between 47 and the last surviving Agent. And none of those guys looked like trained killers.

One last thing. I'm not sure if I missed a scene somewhere, but was there a reason that the whole “set up” took place? Without spoiling it for anyone, the plot just ended with no explanation about what the bad guys were trying to accomplish. And the framework with the Interpol detective trying to catch his ghost was just tagged on to add a second perspective, I didn't really get all that invested in his search.

In short, the movie version of “Hitman” seemed like a gamer's attempt to write a script. I'm sure that he thought it was totally awesome, but when it comes to cinema it fell short. Way short. If you've got no discerning tastes about what a good character arc should be then there's no problem. But there could have been a really fantastic story in there about the abductee-turned-killer searching for redemption.

Maybe that's just not what the point was. And, like I said, I'd still recommend the movie. But next time, guys, try hammering out a good story before producing another video game clone for the big screen.
