Hancock Delivers Multi-Generational Reality

We've all felt it, that perpetual frustration when dealing with the challenges of a world integrated with a variety of cutural and generational ideologies. With every positive step we take, someone or something with a different set of equally valid ideas says, "No." How are we to feel super-human when not even the least amount of respect for our individual efforts is paid? Peter Berg's Hancock explores these concepts in a not so typical blockbuster fashion. After all, who can't relate to the idea of talent kept in check when we know what we are doing will help?

Hancock's personal exploits seem almost mundane. At first glance, we are treated to an individual with otherwise extreme powers who has somehow lost his reason for even trying. Hancock revels in public intoxication with no regard for his immediate appearance. He enters with an impulsive shock and leaves with the same level of bravado, logically concluding that his strengths are beneficial. Except that Hancock has a tendency to scare everyone. With every crashing locomotive and thunderous crunch of yet another demolished building, people everywhere who simply want to live in peace shout, "Enough!" Take your talents elsewhere! We're doing fine with what we have so far. But it isn't quite that simple.

Today's reality begs for some sort of reconciliation between the mesh of cultures and generation gaps experienced on a daily basis. The Baby Boomers are still very much in charge, while Generation X is certain their way of looking at things will actually work for the better. But Ray Embrey's marketing vision of giving away expensive products for free falls on stubborn ears. And what about the Millennials or Echo Boomers, as they are sometimes referred to? They are also convinced of the supremacy of their path. Add to this the different viewpoints between African-American, Latino, and every other culture represented, and what you have are individuals who may feel the only way to be adequately heard is merely to be indifferent. Stop paying respect to another establishment because it stopped paying respect to you.

Films these days are becoming increasingly complex, no doubt reflecting the challenges and frustrations in today's cross-cultural, multi-generational reality. Hancock recognizes these situations, hoping to alert ourselves to the incredible strengths we as individuals have to offer to society as a whole. Of course, all of us at one point or another wish to escape into the relative security of like minded thinkers, but at the risk of diluting and even eliminating our personal talents. Yes, it is possible to live in a chaotic world of differing cultural and generational agendas. Hancock did it!

All the same, Hancock did have to go to a self-imposed prison, desperate to learn some sort of control in order to effectively operate as a contributor to society. It wasn't easy. The learning process never is. But what Hancock left with was empathy. Empathy for those around him. We've all been exposed to sympathy. But empathy? The ability to step into someone else's shoes?

With his powers now focused and far more streamlined, Hancock's next dilemma comes when he encounters someone just like him. Through Mary's instruction, Hancock learns that this partnership will eventually destroy him. Much like what happens when we desire to only be around those who think like we do. Are we really contributing or are we simply looking for a safe place to be? Perhaps learning to live as individuals while at the same time benefiting the group as a whole IS the best course of action to take. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but then nothing in this world ever seems to. We all might as well be superheroes, crackpots, and a**holes!

And perhaps that is the final message delivered throughout the final scenes of Hancock. Frustrated as individuals, mortal and falling apart as a whole. We are all one big Justice League with superpowers all our own. Why not learn to respect another's as much as we respect our own?

We'll live forever with a big red heart on the moon that way.

I was very impressed with the movie all around. There were a few parts that were a bit obvious and not much of a surprise was still fantastic. Great acting, great action, great special effects, and great humor! This was also a movie that both my boyfriend and I could watch and enjoy together (as we tend to not agree on many). We both loved it.

Glad that I spent the extra few dollars to buy it because would have done that in the long run any way.Hancock is certainly a movie that you can watch more than once!

Role Model: Mary Embrey of Hancock

Mary Embrey of Hancock is a role model. She met her husband Ray, a single father, after the birth of his child Ethan, and loss of his wife. They fell in love, and Mary raised Ethan as if he were her own. She loves Ray for the man he is, a regular hero, and supports him in his public relations work.

When Ray brought Hancock home, she loved the way Ray wanted to help Hancock. She accepted him into their home for the sake of her husband. She gladly made Hancock meatballs, not only serving them when they invited Hancock over for dinner, but also bringing some over when he was in the penitentiary. She wanted to instill the same thoughts about Hancock with Ethan, as Ray did. Mary also wanted to give Hancock hope. The thing that Hancock did not understand was why he was the only of his kind on the planet, and he wanted to know where he came from.

Mary never thought that Ray and Hancock would become such friends and spend so much time together. When she saw what was happening she knew there was only one thing to do – answer the questions Hancock had about who he was. Mary knew she had to do that for the good of Hancock. She knew that when she told Hancock the truth there would be consequences but it was worth the risk. Mary knew that sometimes you have to take these kinds of risks in order to do the right thing. She did what she had to do because she loved her husband Ray, and she loved Hancock. In order for Ray’s plan to work, Hancock needed information. Mary wanted to make as much difference in someone’s life as Ray did. Mary knew that Ray would understand. She had that much confidence. She did the right thing in the end.

Role Model : Hancock

Hancock is a role model. He is a man with super powers that somewhere in his life lost his way. He always worked to help people and save lives but was very sloppy. That and he found it hard to live his life being the only one of his people. He felt the only way to compensate for that loss was to drink alcohol.

His life began to change when he met Ray Embrey, who worked in public relations. Hancock felt a connection with him; Embrey understood what Hancock was trying to do. Embrey brought Hancock into his home and introduced him to his wife Mary, and his son Ethan.

For Hancock saving his life, Embrey gave up his time and money to help get him on the right track. He came up with a plan, and although Hancock did not really like the plan, because he could see that Embrey and his family believed in him, Hancock was willing to participate.

In serving time, Hancock saw what the world was like for people. He became more in touch with why they did the things they did, and learned what it meant to be a hero. He also saw that what Embrey asked of him what not that much, it was the fact that Embrey believed in him that he valued.

Hancock learned more about who he was and where he came from. It was a great surprise for him where he learned the information from, but despite that he did not do anything that would hurt the new friendships he created. He adjusted his life and continued life on accordingly. Others may have taken the same information and figuratively “stabbed each other in the back.” Hancock learned many things; most of all that he was not the only hero on earth.

Role Model: Ray Embrey of the Movie, Hancock

Ray Embrey of the movie, Hancock, is a role model. This is a man that follows his heart and wants to do the right thing. Ray is working his dream job in public relations. It is obvious he chose that particular field because he wanted to change the world, especially when you see him visiting businesses, asking them to put the heart logo on their products, and asking them to give their product to people who need it, and cannot afford to buy it. Ray stands by his principles and values. He cares about people.

Here is a man who works hard and uses the knowledge and resources he has to take care of his family. He believes in people first, and what they have the capability of doing.

He sees the good in people, which is probably why he decided to do public relations for Hancock. He is thankful that Hancock saved his life. Ray sees Hancock as a lost soul who needs a little help getting back on his feet. He creates a plan and some gives him some simple things that improve the way he looks to the people that are not hard for Hancock to follow.

He teaches the same thing to his son Aaron, who sees the same good in Hancock that his father sees. Ray is not afraid to give up his life to do the right thing, which is why his wife Mary loves his so much, as finds such value in her husband.

Ray is thrown a few surprises, but although things he learns a little take him aback, he stands by the people he cares for. Ray does not hold grudges. Despite what he learns, he must already know that the people he cares for do not let him down, because they never seem to let him down.

Movie Review: Hancock

In the movie, Hancock, starring Will Smith, gave ME a very big disappointment to Will Smith. This movie was not as great as expected in my point of view. The movie is funny in very little parts and there is no action at all except for at the end where Hancock is in the hospital. The main plot of Hancock is - He is a super “hero” that every one hates. Then he saves a life of a man who promotes things.

After, the promoter tells Hancock to go to jail for his “crimes”, he breaks a lot of things while “saving” the day. In jail, crimes in public go up by 30% and the chief of police needs his help in a robber. Later he finds out that the promoters wife is his actually “wife” and is also a superhero. After a while, Hancock goes to buy some liquor and encounters a robbery and goes to save the day, however he gets shot and must go to the hospital. He has super powers but in the movie it says that when Hancock and his “wife” are together they lose their powers and they were together in the promoter's house. He is rushed to hospital and his wife comes and then a bad guy who wants revenge on Hancock (remember Hancock is a super hero) and tries to kill him but shots his wife and later on Hancock get shot. And as you already know, they are together again and they both lose their powers and about to die. Then Hancock gets up and “flies” away saving both of them. This is basically the whole entire story, but is a little confusing. I would rate the movie a one and a half out of four.

Hancock

It is not too often that I anticipate movies coming out in theaters, but “Hancock” has definitely grabbed my attention. Just the trailers I have seen let's me know that it is going to be a box office smash. I'm going to go, that is for sure. This movie for some odd reason just seems to demand attention. I am the cheap one that usually waits until the DVD release date to see a movie, but this “Hancock” just can and will not have to wait that long for me to come along. I believe in this movie and I do not even know anything at all about it other than the previews we all can see. I do not even have cable, if that says anything at all about my exposure to this preview.

Alright, maybe I know a little about the movie. I believe that Will Smith plays a hero that kind of messes up his heroic acts. He's that hero that we all long for and more. He has issues. He screws up. He's perfect for us all. A hero with super powers that has issues. Sign me up, I'm down with that. To me the fact that he seemingly is going to be a bit of a “normal” human and yet a superman of sorts, makes it all the more appealing. I urge you to go out and see this one. Get a group of friends and grab your little woman and buy some tickets and that awesome popcorn and see “Hancock” coming soon in July! I'll be there, will you?

Magneto (2010)

David S. Ushered along with his parents into the most notorious concentration camp of the Nazi era, Magneto gradually discovers that he has the ability to telekinetically manipulate metal.

Hancock (2008)

There are heroes. There are superheroes. And then there's...

A hard-living superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife of the public relations professional who's trying to repair his image. Hancock is an upcoming 2008 superhero-comedy film directed by Peter Berg and starring Will Smith, Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron. The film is slated for release on July 2, 2008. Will Smith portrays an alcoholic and lazy vagrant with no respect for authority or property. Ironically, he also possesses superpowers and the destruction he leaves in his wake makes him despised by everyone.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this one.
