Role Model: Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones

Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr., or as many know him as, Indiana Jones, is a role model. In stories such as The Indiana Jones Chronicles, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and many others people may not have even heard of. He is Associate Dean of Marshall College in Connecticut. He teaches archeology, and history. When he is not teaching he is often off on an archeological dig.

Growing up, he travelled with his parents all over the world. He learned about many cultures and learned to speak and read many languages, along with their customs. He also fought in World War I. As a child, he learned from his father all about journaling. He has many friends, but when it comes to women, he is pretty much a loner. He not seems to make up his mind. The woman he loved and cherished most, besides his mother, is Marion Ravenwood.

Indiana is not really close to his father. After his mother died, things became worse between him and his father. Marcus Brody, Professor Abner Ravenwood, So did Professor Oxley.

On his archeological journeys he has discovered the Art of the Covenant, the holy grail, the Sankara stone, and the crystal skull. If he is not placing the artifact back where it belongs, he is oftentimes having the item placed in a museum so that others may see it. Some of the items he discovered have been taken by the United States Government and placed in storage because they are so dangerous. The dig always means something to him because of the stories behind it. Indiana also likes to solve the puzzle. He lives for the challenge when it comes to archeology.

He has met Leo Tolstoy, Pancho Villa, Charles de Gaulle, John Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, and Norman Rockwell among many other well-known figures. He learned to live his life from the artist. Indiana Jones is very passionate. He strives for the adventure. The one thing he hates is snakes. From these people as well as many of mentors he has sought the life he desires and is living it. He enjoys wearing his wide brimmed fedora, a leather jacket, and a belt with a holder for his whip.

Indiana Jones enjoys the world of discovery. If he is not meeting new people, he is on some sort of archeological journey. He teaches so that he can work on archeological digs. He loves to use his resources. He does not need a lot to be happy. As long as he is able to teach, and discover more artifacts, he is happy.

Stand and Deliver

A computer programmer, Jaime Escalante quit his job and became a math teacher at Garfield Senior High-School located in the East Los Angeles in California. Jaime drives a VW Bug and teaches 18 high school students calculus well enough for them to pass an Advance Placement Calculus Exam. Most of the 18 high school students struggle with multiplication and fractions and are gang-members and have no hope. However, Jaime Escalante says they have potential and turns them into the country's top calculus and algebra students by teaching them strategies. After teaching them for months, the Advance Placement Calculus Exam takes place. They were given an hour and thirty minutes to complete the exam.

After the exam, there was an announcement saying 18 students tried the Advance Placement test and 18 of them passed. A few days later, the school called and assumed the students cheated because they all had the same wrong answers. Jaime Escalante was furious when he heard this. One of his students called in and asked if all 18 students can re-take the Advance Placement Test. The school allowed them to re-take the test but had only one day to study. Jaime Escalante and the students studied all day and night for the test the next day.

The next day, everyone re-took the test. Every single student passed the Advance Placement test with different scores that year in 1982. The amount of people passing from Garfield High School now increased every year from 18 people in 1982 to 87 people passing in 1987.

My favorite part in the movie was when after Jaime had an argument with the people that suspected that the students cheated, he left the building and had found his VW Bug missing. Jaime had to walk all the way home and when he got home; he went upstairs to his room and sat on the bed. A few minutes later, a few of his students came by his house and shouted that they fixed his car up. Jaime's son said, “Hey dad, look at your new car!!” I liked that part because that part was funny.

The Emperor’s Club

I think that some parts of The Emperor's Club made me sad, because Sedgwick never changed his cheating and lying ways. There were several characters that really stood out in my mind. The first was Mr. Hundert. It disappointed me to see how long it took him to forgive himself for putting Sedgwick Bell into the competition instead of Martin Blythe. Another would be Sedgwick Bell.

During the movie, not only did Mr. Hundert believe that he had changed many of his bad ways, but I also thought he did too. Finally, Marty would be a character that sticks out in my mind. He was really disappointed that he wasn't in the competition, but it really helped him to learn that he should have been in the competition, even if it was 25 years afterwards.

The Emperor's Club was a great movie, but I thought that Sedgwick should have changed. I think that that was supposed to be the message; some people can't and won't change. This doesn't always mean that they refuse to change, sometimes, no matter how hard they try, they can't.

After watching the movie I was asking myself why Sedgwick cheated on both of the contests. Although this was the movie's message, it made me feel bad to see that after all Mr. Hundert had taught him, he was still never able to change his ways. Another question I was asking was why Mr. Hundert didn't say anything when he saw that Sedgwick had cheated. Even though he lost anyways, he should have given Martin Blythe the chance the chance at being Mr. Julius Cesar.
