Saw: Is It Supposed to Be a Scary Movie?

SAW - SAW II - SAW III - SAW IV - SAW V

The series continues...

Well saw is one of the most popular "scary" movies available today.

If you are a SAW addict you may already know that SAW is not about some alien coming to earth or about some devil or ghost.

In fact the SAW series is actually based on a number of murders that take place. It is in fact these murders which make the viewer fell that SAW is a horror movie.

SAW does no have the normal aspects of a horror movie. The fact that makes watchers keep watching is that the murders that take place in the movie are so sick and gross. There is so much blood in this movie compared to many other movie. Also in this movie the murders are not really murders because the victims are to kill themselves in most occasions.

Science has found that people who watch these types of movies are people who enjoy watching people being brutally killed. But don't worry. This does not mean that you are crazy or that you are going to be a murderer in the future.

As long as we just watch the movie, enjoy it and then forget about it we all will be safe.

Enjoy watching!

Saw: Merchants of Death

Before I begin, I would like to say two things. First of all, this is an opinion piece, and I will be neglecting the 'third-person' rule as I write. Secondly, I would like to say that I am in no way associated with any fanatical Christian movement or group, and although I am a Christian man, I do not share many of the extreme censorship views that sometimes come out of the many churches. Now, on to the point of this article.

Since the industrial revolution, America has been a country that has catered to the consumer base, providing what is wanted and what can be sold. Supply and demand, the fundamental of economics, is the pulling force behind most American products. The question of product integrity has slowly diminished, until now most of the objects Americans can purchase are foreign made and foreign assembled. Art has also suffered this decline, with the question of intent and purpose degrading to a shock-and-awe factor, or a mere catering to the styles and opinions expressed by whatever market of masses is aimed for. Andy Warhol's excellent satire of this method of sales, in making art just as one would make a car- for the purpose of sale- has become a common theme, and is no longer done for the sake of satire. Film, as an art, has suffered the worst of all other art forms, save for perhaps music.
Movies have always has the purpose of entertaining and distracting the masses, as is much needed in modern society. They have, however, become redundant and commercial. Even satirical films tend to lean far too deep into commercial territory. The true danger of this, however, is not that the medium itself is being overtaken by commercial interests or profit-driven salesmanship, it's that the medium is a powerful tool being used by many for means that are completely unreasonable. The "Saw" franchise is one that takes this method of appealing to the masses and selling them what they want to see, and pushes it to a new and what I would consider dangerous extent.
"Saw" as a movie in of itself seemed to have an excellent purpose, and a message that resonated with a kind of unrighteous justice. It grew, however, to become a franchise boasting 4 sequels and a somewhat considerable fan base. Who are the people buying Saw? Well, just about anyone. Out of most of the people I know, two are Saw fans, and several others will go to see the movie because they find it thrilling or interesting. The reason I have chosen to point at Saw and say no more is this: we cannot support a murderous game master.
A huge Saw fan-base means more and more people buying in to this masochist, violent ideology that states that it is OK to play the judge, jury, and executioner. As one of my friends put it, "he does it because those people deserve to". This is wrong, and it is my entire point for writing this article. It is never right for any one person to determine the fate of another, and whether it is the intent of the makers of Saw or not, the message being spread is one of ambivalence towards violence, and support for self-justified actions. It is am embodiment of selfish and cruel motives, and one that should not be tolerated.
This would not be an issue if the masses consuming these movies were not easily influenced. When people complain against violent video games, and war games, and television that is filled with sexual nuances and questionable language, they do so because they realize how susceptible people are to the messages mass media promotes. Saw, however, holds no value beyond the raw thrill of watching a person struggle for his life against a twisted and vile plot devised by a self-righteous megalomaniac who believes it is his mission to punish those who are doing evil in the world. What Saw, and all movies like Saw, does is to create a feeling that murder and violence is "ok". In the end, the villain has succeeded in making a five-part tribute to murders. Saw is much like an underdeveloped and far too lengthy "Se7en", and deserves no praise or tribute.

My opinion: The "Saw" franchise is among the most despicable in movie history, and anyone who is a fan needs to consider what the message of the movies really is. The actual message may be contrary to what I am saying it is, but that makes no difference in the importance of realizing the truth behind it.

Top 10 Horror Movies

I've always been a huge fan of horror and mystery, watching and reading everyone I could get my hands on. Opinions vary greatly over the top films but here are mine. Are yours on this list?

1: Nightmare On Elm Street- 1984

The first nightmare hooked me and I truly enjoy all of the sequels. Freddy Kruegar is a supernatural villain whom comes into children's dreams. If they die while dreaming than they die in real life also. He is seeking revenge against the parents of the Elm Street children whom killed and hid his body years before.

2: Saw 1- 2004

This movie has one of the best endings I've ever seen. It begins with two men chained up in a room with a dead body lying between them. The torture scenes are well thought out and even gives the victim a chance to survive but always at a serious price to pay. I think the sequels get bloodier and more gruesome each time. Can't wait for Saw 5 to be released. Jigsaw is a great villain.

3: The Exorcist- 1973

The first time I ever saw this movie I was around 12 years old and I had nightmares for weeks afterwards. A 12 year old girl becomes possessed by a demon and her only hope at salvation is a frail priest. The priest attempts an exorcism in hopes of saving her soul. Full of head spinning, evil talking excitement. It still freaks me out.

4: Halloween- 1978

It begins with Michael Myers, as a child, stabbing and killing his seventeen year old sister on Halloween night. Fifteen years later, after being committed all that time Myers escapes. Returning to his home town he stalks and kills the teenagers on Halloween night. A true slasher film but one of the best.

5: The Shining-1980

I

In my opinion one of Jack Nicholson's best performances. He plays Jack, a frustrated author who takes a job as caretaker to a hotel that has closed down for the winter. Finding out the previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his entire family did nothing to change Jack's mind. Believing this had nothing to do with him, Jack soon learns very differently.

6: Seven-1995

7: Dawn of the Dead- 1978

8: Psycho- 1960

9: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre- 1974

10: The Dark Secret of Harvest Home- 1978

Well there's my top 10 horror movies. What are your's?

Vampires: Must See Films

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved horror flicks. I can remember watching them with my bro, as the two of us tried to frighten each other or get a good laugh at the bad acting. And as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate the genre. My favorite films are the vampire flicks. Nothing says scary like the undead. So in the spirit of vampire movies, here are a few of my favorites.

Nosferatu: Symphony of Horrors (1922)

This was the first vampire film I ever saw, and as a teen, it creeped me out. The film is a classic as far as vampire movies go. Nosferatu is a Slavonic word meaning plague carrier. By all accounts, this film uses the terminology as a reference to Count Orlok, the vampire of the film. Played by Max Schreck, Nosferatu is a haunting figure. While he is to be reviled, at times one can't help but to feel pity. Unlike the handsome, charismatic portrayals of most men in vampire movies, Schrek's Nosferatu is the kind of vampire you'd want to cower in front of. It is a must see if you're an avid vampire lover.

Dracula (1931)

Bela Lugosi. Enough said. He paved the way for future vampires, and he did a splendid job. The movie was originally based on the Broadway play adapted from Bram Stoker's book. Lugosi is charming, whilst eerie at the same time. The use of shadows helps to set the mood of the film. Also, the characterization of Renfield is sublime. Dwight Frye who plays Renfield puts the crazy in his character. While the film is campy at times, there are those moments that are quite creepy.

The Lost Boys (1987)

One of my favorites as a kid. Put a bunch of good looking guys in a movie, and you have my undivided attention. Two teenage sons move to California with their divorced mom, only to find vampires inhabit the city. You have to love Corey Feldman's trash-talking character. Kiefer Sutherland plays a remarkable , charismatic vampire, that is a trademark signature for these kind of roles. The movie is smart and funny as far as vampire movies go, and has easily become a cult classic.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

While this movie is epic in the portrayal of vampire characters, I must say Kirsten Dunst's portrayal is what did it for me. A child vampire throwing a tantrum is quite a site to behold. With Louis and Lestat acting as father figures for the perpetual child-like Claudia, they put the dysfunction in dysfunctional. The story is told through Louis, recounting 200 years of love, death, betrayal, and the curse that it is to be a vampire.

30 Days of Night

I must admit, the acting was hard to get into. But it's a horror movie, so what can you expect? It's the idea of the plot that plays psychologically with your mind. Imagine being trapped in the middle of nowhere (Barrow, Alaska) during a period where the sun will not emerge from darkness for 30 days. Throw in some psychotic vampires, and you have what nightmares are made of. The vampire dialogue is hilarious when listening to their guttural discourse, and the gore is just out there. Nevertheless, it is entertaining at times.

Blood: The Last Vampire (2000)

I love anime. And as far as anime goes, this film is awesome. Saya, who herself is a vampire, is the last of her kind. Trapped in the everlasting body of a 16 year-old, she's a sword-wielding, demon-killer who works for the U.S. government. Nothing is said of her background (why she became a vampire), but it doesn't matter because the viewer becomes enraptured with the quality of techniques used in this animation film.

Near Dark (1987)

Oh the dilemma of becoming a vampire. Caleb is young man who is seduced by the “gentle” vampire Mae. Of course she bites him, and then Caleb is forced to learn how to kill, yet he can't find will to do it. And Bill Pullman's performance as Severen is notable. The film revolves around Caleb's transformation, and his choice of living with the undead or his family.

Movies for the Brave: Top 10 Horrifying Movies of All Times

I have seen Bozsi Rose post the article "The 10 Best Horror Movies Of The 90s" and was inspired to share also the movies which I think are the best horror movies of all time. I am a major fan of horror movies, and so far I have watched most of the films that recently produced. Here are some of the best horror movies you can ever watch:

Saw I-IV

This can be the one of the best gruesome horror movies I've ever seen in my entire life considering the thrilling scenes found within this movie. I have seen the available series in the market and all of them were good. What is very interesting is that mystery on how they are unconsciously captured by the killer. The game played in this movie can also be called as the "Game of Life and Death" or the "Follow The Rules Game". The player should follow the game or else they'll die, but then the viewer should just know that the game has no chance of survival. The game master is known to be "Jigsaw Killer" because of the way he cuts the skin of his victims from his victims. Although the movie was a great success worldwide garnering a box office sales of $102,917,772, the movie was highly criticized considering all the immoralities done in the movie, such as merciless amputations of body parts.

Dawn Of The Dead

The best movie about zombies as of the moment in the horror movies. Why? It is because of the effective prosthetics and acting of the artists. If you are going to trace the main reason of why zombies began to multiply, you would see that it was caused by an unknown virus spread by a patient in the hospital. The movie follows the concept that a zombie should be shot on the head in order to kill it.

The Grudge

One of the best Korean Horror Movie, although the scenes can be quite complicated, you will just learn to understand what the scene means along the way. The story is centered with the house where the mother and son was brutally killed, but later explained in The Grudge 2 that it is not just the house. The woman that was killed want to seek revenge that is why she casts a curse to the person she wants. I have seen the movie at it really frightened me.

Final Destination 3

There is this girl that has the capability to see the future. The story began on a carnival site where they want to ride on a roller coaster. The girl foresaw that there will be a problem on the trackway of the roller coaster and all that are riding on it will die. All the things she foresaw actually happened and her boyfriend also died on that accident. The bad luck continued until the end where she and her other friend met in a train.

Leather Face: Texas Chainsaw Massacre

There was this family of cannibal people wherein they would slaughter their victims and eat them. There were a couple of people ( actually they are friends) who passed through the vicinity of the State of Texas and all of them were eventually killed at then end despite their effort to survive. This movie is mistakenly perceived to be true to life since the author of the movie stated that the movie was genuine. Actually, there was really no cannibal family. The quotation of the author was just to draw more viewers to view the movie.

Shutter

A Korean Horror movie with horrifying scenes all through out the movie. The camera guy who was engaged with a woman started to see things that are not supposed to be seen by normal people. It was actually caused by his dead ex-girlfriend who fell in love with him. The at the end tried to end his life, but failed, until the end of the movie the ghost of his ex-girlfriend remained to be literally with him.

Friday the 13th

This horror movie series can be considered to be the longest movie series ever made because of the 10 sequels that followed the first one. This movie was a huge success because it grossed over 39.7 million dollars. The movie contained unique deaths which other movies do not contain. I have watched some of the series and it was really good for those who are looking for slasher horror movies.

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

This is one is a true to life horror movie. The movie is about a girl being possessed by a many demons. Many have tried to overthrow the devil that possessed the girl but all of them failed, except for the last priests who did exorcism to Emily Rose. There were many revelations brought about by the demons inside the body of the girl but I just do not know whether they were really true.

28 Days Later

A Major Success can be awarded to this movie because of the recognition it gained from different reviewers. It grossed 82.7 million dollars worldwide. It was positively criticized by highly respected bodies. The movie focuses on how the four left characters tried their very best to survive against the deadly virus that was accidentally spread all through the country.

Dracula

The movie grossed $20,158,970 worldwide. There were some disappointments within the studio because of the weak ticket sales. There were some who said that the movie was just too light to be a horror movie. Well, although the movie did not reach its goal, I could say that the movie was spectacularly done. This is the best movie about dracula.

The 10 Best Horror Movies of the 80's

This list is in no way a scientific endeavor - It is compiled from my own experiences as a child in the 80s. These movies have helped shape my oh so precious psyche. Enjoy!

Poltergeist

"They're here..." I'm sure, like most of these movies, the special effects look cheesy. Having said that, watching a grown man tear through his own face, no matter how cheesy, is still good-old-fashioned-horror-movie fun. This is nearly a flawless horror movie, not appropriately cheesy for a Halloween gathering, but great for a movie rental.

The Shining

I'm hesitant to put this one in the horror movie category because it's a classic in it's own right. It's yet another Stephen King inspired horror movie, 3rd on the list. The Shining has one of the most memorable lines ever, "Here's Johnny!". Turn the lights low, grab some popcorn, and get ready for the redrum.

Nightmare on Elm Street

No movie did more to scare me as a kid than this one. A man that stalks you in your dreams, has a full hand of knives, and a wicked sense of humor. Notice how no one wears red and green striped sweaters anymore? It's not just a fashion no-no, it's a Freddy flashback.

Friday the 13th

This movie set off a whole series of sequels, though Jason is surprisingly absent from this first movie. Want to win at trivia games? Remember this, Mrs. Voorhies. Once you see the movie, you'll know what I mean.

Hellraiser

An all-time favorite, Pinhead is one of the best monster/villains. His ability to inflict pain with absolutely no remorse goes beyond any other horror movie villain. Not to mention, his freakish appearance is enough to instill fear in the bravest of us. He looks like a unique mixture of Punk and Goth with just a hint of demon.

Children of the Corn

Based on a Stephen King novella, this is a tale every parent should watch. A town of children, led by a fanatical preacher, kills all the adults in the town. These children worship a force that lives in the corn fields. Think about that before sending little Timmy and Bobbie Sue to bed early without any dinner.

The Lost Boys

Every person I know that was a teenager in the 80s has seen this film and cherishes it. A group of young studs turn out to belong to the legion of the undead. Who has the awful task of hunting them down? How about the Two Coreys! Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. To make it even cooler, the vampires road motorcycles and had wicked cool 80s metal hair cuts.

Sleepaway Camp

A favorite, yet cheesy, horror flick. The whole movie isn't great, but the last five minutes are totally worth the time investment. There's a catchphrase at the end, which is also a spoiler, so I will not repeat it here, but you will be saying it at inappropriate times for years to come.

Pet Cemetery

Yes, another movie about bringing the dead back to life. Really people, let the dead go! This time, it's a sacred burial ground that gets them hopping; except that when they come back, they're insane murderers. This movie, though not as gory as some others, is definitely a spooky little thriller.

The Re-Animator

An intense young med-student is hell bent on reanimating the dead, hence the name. Does he succeed? You bet your living cells he does. Not only can he bring back the dead, but he can reanimate individual body parts. For instance, he brings a severed head back to life. Very gory, and a cult classic as well.

The Best Horror Movies

The best horror movies are those that don't rely on blood, guts and sex to intrigue the audience. The best horror movies make you cringe without making you sick to your stomach. They may leave you feeling scared, anxious, or shocked, but they shouldn't make you puke your guts out.

I have found that some of the best horror movies, are the old time classics. I often look through my dads collection of movies when I want to find a good horror movie. And I have found many that I have become a fan of.

Black Christmas (1975)

This is a story about the residents of a sorority house being killed off by a cunning, mysterious killer. This movie is really good at using suspense and thrills to make your heart crawl up into your throat. There is very minimal blood, and it is not graphic in the least. But it is an amazingly thrilling scare!

Halloween (1978)

Michael Myers is a very creepy character, I'm sure many people can agree on that. He is my favorite slasher killer, because his movie does not use any blood or gore to try and get under its audience's skin. It does that fine with the suspense and creepiness of the blade bearing psychotic patient.

Very rarely do I enjoy a remake of an old time horror classic, but on a couple of exceptions a director was able to use the originals terror in their remake, without the use of blood or sex.

The Hitcher (1986, 2007)

I really enjoyed both of these films. Director Dave Meyers showed how smart he was when he decided to keep the remake's scenes almost exactly the same as the original's. He added a few changes to the plot of the movie, but nothing that took focus away from the horror it brought to the big screen. He used minimal gore, and made the good decision of not showing the blood in a scene that, in my opinion, was one of the most graphic ways a person could be killed. I really applaud Dave Meyers for making the remake as enjoyable as the original.

When A Stranger Calls (1979, 2006)

Even though I enjoyed both the original and remake of this movie, they could not have been more different. The remake did not follow the original's storyline at all, but that is nothing against it. By focusing more on one night of terror for the babysitter, I think director Simon West was able to give more chances for suspense and terror. I think everyone fears being trapped, and that is exactly how he makes the audience feel with his film. There is no blood or sex used in this movie, because it doesn't need to add any unnecessary elements to satisfy its fans.

The best horror movies stick to their title; horror movies. They don't try to sneak in blood and guts, or breasts and butts. They hold firm on scaring their audiences with true terror. No movie can beat that of a true horror.
