The two Romeo and Juliet movies, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann in nineteen sixty-eight and nineteen ninety-six were based on Shakespeare's drama of two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, fighting against one another. Then two people from different families fall in love that is forbidden.

Both of the films have some similarities. They share the same tone of language. The characters speak in Shakespeare's tone. “Nay which is disgrace to them if they bear it.” It is very different then how we speak to each other and more proper.

The characters are violent and very respectful in both. “This, by his voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy. What! Dares the slave come hither, covered with an antic face, to fleer and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honor of my kin, to strike him dead I hold it not a sin.” Tybalt is prepared to slay Romeo for coming to the Capulet's party. He doesn't like or want anyone to disrespect his family at all, especially a Montague.

Since the movies were filmed in two different time eras they do have some contrasts. In the nineteen sixty-eight film, the setting is in the Medieval Times so they had swords, horses, and older clothing styles.” Put up your sword. You know not what you do.” Not the strongest quote, but shows that they fought with sword were used in the Medieval Times.

Now the nineteen ninety-six film is more modern and takes place in the late nineties I would say. It does seem to be in the U.S. I know this because they drive cars; have guns, and the clothes they wore in that time era. They also have a shootout in a gas station which they did not have in the nineteen sixty-eight film.

In the nineteen ninety-six film there is some comedy to lighten the mood, but in the nineteen sixty-eight film there is absolutely none. The nineteen ninety-six one, there is a lot to do with religion and symbols of Christ. Even with all the violence, they still believe in the religion and make it a part of their life. In the nineteen sixty-eight one there aren't any signs of religion or symbols of Christ.

Both of the Romeo and Juliet films were good, but I liked the nineteen ninety-six one over the nineteen sixty-eight one. I liked the ninety ninety-six one more because I don't care for old movies like the nineteen sixty-eight one. I guess I do like to see some special effects in movies; they make then look more real.
