The Camorra

The Camorra’s origins are quite murky and are often wrapped in romantic mystique. Some claim descent from a sixteenth century Spanish secret society at a time when the Kingdom of Naples was under Spanish rule. However, the first official mention of the Camorra occurs in police records from around 1820 and a more likely explanation is that the organisation grew out of a number of small criminal gangs operating in Naples at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

A written statute discovered in 1820 showed an attempt to organise the cities criminal underworld into a fixed structure and some kind of hierarchy. More documents discovered over 22 years later describing initiation rites for new members and also how the families of imprisoned members were to be taken care of. It was not long before the newly organised Camorra began to invade all aspects of Neapolitan society.

Despite these attempts to centrally organise the Camorra it has never been a coherent whole like the Sicilian Cosa Nostra. It is made up of a loose confederation of numerous family clans with each group acting independently and controlling all activity in a particular territory. However, there is some minimal co-ordination between the clans in an attempt to avoid outright war. It is currently estimated by the Italian police that there are around 150 clans with over 6,700 members in Naples and the surrounding areas. The clans have an endless recruiting ground among the poor and disenfranchised who live amongst the downtrodden housing estates on the outskirts of the city

Competition between the different clans for lucrative rackets and new territory often erupts into feuds. In 2004/5 the Scampia feud, as it became known in the Italian press, erupted between the Di Lauro Clan and a splinter group called the “Scissionisti” which resulted in over 100 street killings. The following year 12 were killed in 10 days after running battles between 20 different clans. More than 1,000 extra police were despatched to Naples to control the anarchy but in 2007 there were over 120 Camorra related murders.

Apart from the organised crime staples of drug trafficking, loan sharking, prostitution, protection rackets and illegal gambling the Camorra have also infiltrated legitimate industries. According to an Italian Trade Organisation the criminal organisation controls the milk, fishing, coffee and garment industries and owns over 2,500 bakeries in Naples.

Disastrously for the population of the southern region of Campania, of which Naples is the capital, garbage disposal has also come under the Camorra’s dominion. In consort with corrupt local officials and industrialists the crime syndicate has for years been illegally disposing of sensitive materials. Great damage has been caused to the environment and continues to be done as rubbish is often dumped and burnt in public spaces. Toxic waste has been mixed with cement to make buildings throughout the region as a result of the Camorra having major construction contracts as well as waste disposal. And a long running garbage crisis has occurred in the city with rubbish piling up in the streets because there is no longer any room in any of the regions landfills.

The Camorra has been able to grow almost unimpeded and with apparent impunity mainly due to its strategy of political patronage. They are often sought out by ambitious politicians, eager to utilize the clans grip on the local community to get elected. In return the family clans use their political connections to protect and assist their members and bring benefits to their territory. The heads of the major Camorra clans are power brokers in both local and national politics.

The Magic Roundabout

The daily mirror said regarding the film 'Dazzling...The must-see movie for families' and gave it a four star rating. Star magazine said 'Simply magic' and also gave it a rating of four stars. It has quite a star cast including: Kylie Minogue as the voice of Florence; Robbie Williams as the voice of Dougal; Tom Baker as the voice of Zeebad; Jim Broadbent as the voice of Brian the snail and Lee Evans as the voice of the magic train. The main plot of the film is caused by dougal (still as his sugar-loving self), he drives into the magic roundabout on a cart whilst on a mad escapade to get some candy, releasing the evil zeebad.

Zeebad turns out to be Zebedee's arch enemy and in ancient times, Zebedee had fought Zeebad, defeated him and imprisoned him in the magic roundabout. Free once again Zeebad wants to freeze the sun, plunging the earth into darkness and cold. His first act of evilness is trapping Florence and the children inside the roundabout behind a wall of ice. Once escaped, Zeebad disapears. Then follows the story as dougal and friends go on a journey to find Zeebad and the three magic diamonds to save Florence and the children. Blaming Dougal for what has happened, the other animals leave dougal on watch at night whilst they sleep and ion the morning Dougal has vanished! Can they rescue Dougal, find the diamonds, stop zeebad and get home in time for bed? Watch it to find out! Rating 8/10

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

I absolutely adored this film-- so much so, in fact, that I went to see it twice in one week!

I had been apprehensive about a film adaptation of John Boyne's wonderful book, as much of the charm (and simultaneous shock value) of the novel lies in it's narration by an 8 year old boy and his interpretation of the events which surround him in Nazi Germany during WWII. Mark Hermon's direction, however, is very in keeping with the style of Boyne's book, while at the same time using the power of the visual image to its full effect. This can be seen throughout the film, such as the repeated imagery of the black smoke curling into the sky as the furnaces are lit in the Auswitch concentration camp where Bruno's father is a soldier.

Hermon also fleshed out the characters in this filmic adaptation, especially that of Bruno's mother, who becomes a more sympathetic figure in this portrayal.

The only place where I feel this film falls done is in the key relationship of the story, that of the friendship between Bruno and Schmuel, the young boy trapped in the concentration camp whom Bruno befriends. The selfishness of childhood is apparent as Bruno gobbles chocolate without thinking of his starving companion, but the bond that the boys share across all boundaries is not imparted to the audience.

The ending, however, is where the visual medium is used to it's full advantage, and while purists might argue that it is different to the book, I believe it suits the adaptation very well, and the closing images will stay with the viewer long after they leave the cinema.

Linha De Passe (Line of Passage)

Four brothers with four burning ambitions: an ordinary family. One mother trying to hold things together, eternally trying to unblock the kitchen sink in the shack they all share in non-attractive Säo Paolo, Brazil.

Dario sets his hopes for escaping the slum life on his skills as a footballer; Denis is a womanising petty crook waiting for the big break. Dhino finds it in Pentecostal Christianity, but the path is bumpy, little Reginaldo just wants to drive a bus - and succeeds somewhat extravagantly!

A coming of age story, this female-directed movie explores a male world sustained by women. Brothers fall out but are there for each other. Life is lived in the atmosphere of an edgy criminality, and the family don't have much by way of material goods, the contrast with others being provided by the doctor's home that the mother cleans.

Hope of a brighter future is represented when the tired, old before her time and pregnant yet again mother comes home to find that the kitchen sink has been properly unblocked by Dario who has suddenly begun to care. Such a small matter, but it gives joy, pleasure and light to an otherwise weary existence. I'll never look at my free-flowing plug hole in quite the same way again.

Dhino, the Christian, is an interesting character, and presents a gritty realism of faith. He hobbles along trusting in Jesus, messing up frequently, but going on in faith and in the knowledge that he is accepted by God even though he is not perfect. His family and friends know his shortcomings and tease him mercilessly about his faith and failings but he keeps on going, making mistakes and walking with courage in a fallen world.

Sao Paolo is depicted as a dirty, crass sort of place, nowhere to raise a family, but the non-descript setting lets the family show themselves for who they are without the distraction of the exotic, and let's face it, there's nowhere more exotic than Brazil - or so I hear.

Favorite Family Movies

My family loves to watch movies together at home. We watch all varieties: kids, comedies, suspense, horror, and even some documentaries. I usually do not like to rewatch movies over and over, but these have been an exception.

Game Plan

This movie is about a famous football player that learns he is a father of young girl. Finding out that he was a father was a complete shock and it turned his life inside out. Everytime I watch this movie I am brought to tears and laughter numerous times. It portrays the importance of a loving bond between parents and children.

Facing the Giants

In this movie a highschool football coach has been struggling on the field with a losing season again. Everything beging to go on a downhill spiral. His teams' parents are not satisfied, his team has no confidence in themselves, car troubles, and he is even having difficulty fulfilling his wife's dream of creating a family. However, instead of giving up and being defeated, he turned to GOD. This is an amazing movie to watch and witness the power of GOD's love.

Click

Just like many parents today, we sometimes get caught up with work so much that we take our families for granted. Adam Sandler plays the part of a father who's trying to get ahead in the business world that he loses sense of the role that a father and husband should maintain in a family unit. Magically, he found a remote control that could fast forward undesirable or stressful situations in his life. This movie is not only funny but also a tear jerker, atleast for me. It reminds us that family time is valuable and should NEVER be taken for granted.

So if you are looking for an excellent family movie to enjoy together, please consider one of these. I promise you won't forget it.

Fido

For years man's best friend has been his dog, Fido takes this love between man and his pet and gives it a unusual new spin in 1950's America.

Made and released in the United States back in 2006, Fido sneaks its way into the UK under the radar and sadly going straight to DVD, why I hear you cry? Well it's not because it bad, as is often the case the problem with Fido is that it provide a challenge for the British Board Of Film Classification. Aspects of the movie just were too difficult for the BBFC to accept under similar certification as was suggested in the US. Fido takes a simple family movie and spins it sharply on its axis replacing man's best friend with a zombie.

After the fall of space dust the dead came back to life and became flesh eating zombies, those that die or those that are eaten too become zombies very much like any other zombie movie. The premise of Fido is that a renowned scientist desperate not to be parted from his wife created a collar that domesticates a zombie allowing them to be a pet cum servant. In this alternate version of 1950's America a sign of status is the possession of one or more zombies, something the Robinson family does not possess. In an attempt to keep up with the Jones' Helen Robinson (Carrie Anne Moss) purchases a zombie who later becomes named Fido (Billy Connelly).

Fido focuses on relationships chiefly, most notably in this case the relationship between young Timmy (K'Sun Ray) his zombie Fido, and then in turn his unusual relationship with his father Bill (Dylan Baker) and his mother Helen. With the exception of Timmy's relationship with Fido, all other encounters are initially dysfunctional; but the movies big story is all about change, those that can make change and those that are incapable.

Fido is a strange combination, it's so much a family movie and then Connelly's Fido goes off on one tearing someone's limbs off and devouring them, even with this sudden downbeat turn and the sight of dismemberment there is no real gore, nothing to really offend its audience, I'd happily let a child of any age watch this if they so felt the need, I see no difference between this and a movie like Free Willy.

Rather like some of the more recent Disney or Pixar movies, Fido has a special humour about it while younger audiences will see the movie in a perfectly innocent light, older viewers will be able to read between certain lines and see far more adult jokes carefully sandwiched into the most innocent of conversations. It's this aspect as well as the innocent child like aspects of the movie that make Fido such a striking and enjoyable movie.

When not charming you with its humour, or alternate storyline the next endearing feature is the wonderfully idyllic 50's setting. From the vehicles, locations, and sets you long to live in the town this movie is set in. When not charmed by the beautiful lifestyles and magnificently 50's furnishings your captivated by the movies music, it's a strange thing to understand that Fido is set in the same year as 1985's Back To The Future but the musical tastes are dramatically miles apart. Fido is filled with Twee post war style music, while Back To The Future focuses on the birth of Rock and Roll, an aspect that seems a million miles away from Fido. Add this unusually kitsch score to some unusual set pieces of devouring granny, or catch with a zombie and the picture starts to become complete.

I loved Fido, I enjoyed the humour, and especially the storyline that takes George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead and makes it gospel, as if it was a real event. While nobody can question the performances of Billy Connelly who literally plays untrained dog for the most part, Moss or Day; the movies most enjoyable role is take by Murder One's Dylan Baker as the uncomfortable father of Timmy. As the pieces of the story assemble you get to understand the reason why Bill behaves the way he does, and at the same time feel his need to belong to something more, and be seen in a different light. If you can find it in your heart to dismiss Fido as a horror movie you'll find yourself on very familiar child friendly ground, the horror category being something that was only generalised at the time of certification and the unfamiliarity of the movie on UK audiences due to the lack of publicity surrounding the piece. And even now the movie is deprived of the acclaim it deserves, there were no reviewers discs circulating the movie went straight to general DVD release, which I suspect could be the reason why you might be hearing about Fido for the first time.

If you enjoyed the Tim Burton version of Batman, Beetlejuice, Willy Wonka, and Call Of The Wild you are sure to enjoy Fido.

Left Behind World at War: A Review

Left Behind World At War takes place at a time when the world is at peace and is basseting in the relative false sense of security and newfound unity that United Nations' President Nicolae Carpathia has accomplished in little less than 3 ½ years in power.

Weapons of mass-destruction have been nearly eliminated from the nuclear and biological stockpiles of the world's most powerful nations. Old fences that had been built once-upon-a-time-ago to keep people out have been torn down and now the citizens of the world can travel without borders. All world leaders are made equal, except for that of President Nicolae Carpathia, whose power supercedes all other world powers combined.

A super-secret super-bug has mysteriously infected members of the underground church movement of believers in Jesus Christ and began slowly and painfully killing them off.

The American President (Lou Gossett Jr.) Gerald Fitzhugh has started to suspect that something is wrong after experiencing a failed assassination attempt on his life, but killed his vice-president instead. Now, starting to look for some answers in the enemy's camp “The Christians”, Fitzhugh finds himself face-to-face with Buck Williams and Buck faced with a gun to his head.

Rayford Steele commits to new love and marries finally closing an old, but opening a new chapter in his life after his first wife and his son vanished years before. Rayford is able to forge new alliances and help Buck save the American President.

Chloe carries out her service for the Lord at the church mission and hospital as the first patients suffering from this new super-bug begin to arrive for some help. Not too long after Chloe and the pastor (family friend) draws ill and near death as yet new victims of the deadly illness.

The appearance of the underground (a rebel group and not associated with the Christians) first comes to the aid of the American President during the assassination attempt and now, the America President wants to have a few words with their commanders. Maybe, both sides can come to trust each other enough to work together against the ultimate powers given to President Nicolae Carpathia by the leaders of the world and the supernatural powers given to him by Satan.

This is an action-packed adventure that the whole family can enjoy, but if you want to know what happens next, then you will need to either buy or rent a copy for the mind-blowing beginning, middle and end of Left Behind World At War.

Then She Found Me: A Review

Helen Hunt's feature film directorial debut has a lot going for it. Her all-star cast (herself, Bette Midler, Colin Firth, and Matthew Broderick) doles out the dark humor in a love story that spans the gamut of love through romance, family, and friendship. With an assortment of anti-heroes and a tender, mildly relatable plot, Then She Found Me aspired to be the Indie film of the year.

It wasn't. It wasn't the worst either, of course. While I'm slow to judge films that were based on books I haven't read, I'll say that my problem wasn't at all with the story so much as the plot structure, the acting, and the dialog.

This film, simply, belongs on stage. At least the way it's structured currently. It's in two acts (a film should be in three), it takes too long to get into the meat of the story, and it wraps up quickly and awfully. I was waiting for a curtain call.

The acting is too dramatic, especially in Midler and Broderick- both are amazing stage performers, but need to stay in their element. Hunt, it seems, is still used to sitcom acting, and leaves something to be desired in her weak performance. Firth is really the only one to bring the cinematic into the film. He is the only one of the four who adds emotional dimension to his character.

The dialog is too fast for an Indie film. It brings the completely unrealistic “Gilmore Girls element” of too-quick banter to something that should be and could easily be more realistic. Again, this kind of dialog belongs on the stage, where quick witty words would bring down the house. I just had a hard time following it.

Where we should have been sympathizing, we were straining our ears, and where we should have been empathizing, we were rolling our eyes in skepticism.

All in all, it was not a waste of time, but it was time I'd rather have spent in a theatre watching the story live. The story could be adapted for stage with ease, and should have been adapted better for film.

The Tailes of Abbygail Premier in Portland, Oregon

Bright and early on the morning of the 21st, 400 children and their families were invited to the World Premier of "The Tails of Abbygail". Two stretched limousines were sent to the Children's Hospital to pick up handicapped children for the event. Everyone arrived to walk the red carpet in amazement as they entered the Sandy Cinema. It was a beautiful day to have a Hollywood caliber movie premier in Sandy, Oregon.

All of the children attending got tiaras or pirate eye patches, sparkling apple cider in fancy decorated champagne flutes, cotton candy, and fresh buttered popcorn. Everyone waited in anticipation for the stars of the show to make their appearance. Excitement mounted as the guests were served fabulous treats while they waited. Suddenly, little girls and boys exploded with excitement as the stars of the movie arrived in their very own Hummer decked out in Abbygail decor. One-by-one, they made their way down the red carpet, stopping to greet and get a pet by everyone along the way.

Excitedly, guests filed into the theater to watch “The Tails of Abbygail”. Before the show, Terri Lynn and Al Link, the creators of “The Tails of Abbygail”, along with “friends of the cast” greeted the crowd again, and spoke about how important this film is to children everywhere.

Suddenly, the lights went out, and the show began, and that's where we met Abbygail, a curious Jack Russell Terrier who wishes her toy friends would come to life and play with her. We watched as they did, and went on a grand adventure filled with fun, life lessons, and even buried treasure. The first of its series, “The Tails of Abbygail” was fun and lighthearted with serious undertones encouraging things like water safety and stranger danger.

After the show, guests were invited to a private tea party where the magic kept on going. Each child was given a gift bag as they left the theater that was filled with treats, a “paw-ta-graphed” poster, and even a copy of the DVD!

Terri Lynn Link, a successful Oregon business owner, was sitting around her pool one day when she noticed her dogs playing in the sunshine. They were making people smile. Suddenly, she had an idea, and "The Tails of Abbygail" was born. It has been endorsed and approved by KIDS FIRST- The Coalition for Quality Children's Media, was the official selection of KIDS FIRST! Film Festival, the largest festival for children's films, in 2008, and won a Bronze Statue in the 29th Annual Telly Awards.

I had a chance to meet up with Terry Lynn after the show to have her autograph our DVD's and posters, and I have to say, she has created something special!! If you haven't gotten a chance to see "The Tails of Abbygail", please check it out at www.weloveabby.com

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I was able to go see the new Indiana Jones flick. I was very excited. I remember watching Indiana Jones when I was little with my dad and my brothers. As I walked in and sat down my first observation was that even though Harrison Ford looked older, he still looked handsome. Shallowness aside, I began watching. I love the time period it was sent in, and I especially liked how they didn't try to cover up Ford's age. It took all the fears of him not being able to do it and through them out the window.

When you take the effort to put aside how ridiculously unrealistic the movie is, you can begin enjoying it. No man is capable of dodging that many bullets, that's all I have to say. Nevertheless, it was a family movie. That being said, kids eat unrealistic for breakfast. It's us old people who find it annoying, and I think that's because we're bitter at reality.

I was happy to see a bit of historical truth mixed in the movie. Of course, with Indiana Jones it wasn't a surprise. Of course they took an interesting history lesson and blew it out of the water. This could be seen as a bad thing or a good thing, personally, I think it was cool. History comes alive with a bit of imagination. Without imagination, I truly don't believe a lot of history would have been uncovered.
