Insanitarium (2008) Review

I watched this film and it is really very good.

It is directed by Jeff Buhler, who has also recently done The Midnight Meat Train, the cast are amazing and plot sensational. I have seen some ratings for this movie are quite poor, but i don't think so at all.

The cast features: Jesse Metcalfe who plays Jack, Kiele Sanchez ( played Nikki Fernandez in Lost) who plays Lily, Peter Stormare ( Prison Break and CSI) plays Dr Gianetti and Kevin Sussman ( Ugly Betty, CSI and My Name is Earl). They are the four most frequent characters.

Metcalfe plays a character that intentionally gets himself locked up inside a psychiatric hospital, Jack, as he wants to release his sister Lily( Sanchez) from there. She has been in there after attempting suicide after their mothers' death. Jack tries to find his sister but to no avail. He eventually finds her and promises he will get them out of there. He enlists the help of a fellow "patient" Dave ( Sussman) to help him. He finds that Dr Gianetti is using the patients as "guinea pigs". He has developed a drug that he gives to people on maximum and it turns them into flesh eating psychos!

It is really creepy, i think. I think both Metcalfe and Sanchez play their roles incredibly and deserve recognition. It's quite a bit different to other films that have Zombies in it but at the same time it is a very fresh feeling movie. Something different, quite different.

Watch the movie, if you haven't already, and let me know your opinions. Thank You.

The Camorra

The Camorra’s origins are quite murky and are often wrapped in romantic mystique. Some claim descent from a sixteenth century Spanish secret society at a time when the Kingdom of Naples was under Spanish rule. However, the first official mention of the Camorra occurs in police records from around 1820 and a more likely explanation is that the organisation grew out of a number of small criminal gangs operating in Naples at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

A written statute discovered in 1820 showed an attempt to organise the cities criminal underworld into a fixed structure and some kind of hierarchy. More documents discovered over 22 years later describing initiation rites for new members and also how the families of imprisoned members were to be taken care of. It was not long before the newly organised Camorra began to invade all aspects of Neapolitan society.

Despite these attempts to centrally organise the Camorra it has never been a coherent whole like the Sicilian Cosa Nostra. It is made up of a loose confederation of numerous family clans with each group acting independently and controlling all activity in a particular territory. However, there is some minimal co-ordination between the clans in an attempt to avoid outright war. It is currently estimated by the Italian police that there are around 150 clans with over 6,700 members in Naples and the surrounding areas. The clans have an endless recruiting ground among the poor and disenfranchised who live amongst the downtrodden housing estates on the outskirts of the city

Competition between the different clans for lucrative rackets and new territory often erupts into feuds. In 2004/5 the Scampia feud, as it became known in the Italian press, erupted between the Di Lauro Clan and a splinter group called the “Scissionisti” which resulted in over 100 street killings. The following year 12 were killed in 10 days after running battles between 20 different clans. More than 1,000 extra police were despatched to Naples to control the anarchy but in 2007 there were over 120 Camorra related murders.

Apart from the organised crime staples of drug trafficking, loan sharking, prostitution, protection rackets and illegal gambling the Camorra have also infiltrated legitimate industries. According to an Italian Trade Organisation the criminal organisation controls the milk, fishing, coffee and garment industries and owns over 2,500 bakeries in Naples.

Disastrously for the population of the southern region of Campania, of which Naples is the capital, garbage disposal has also come under the Camorra’s dominion. In consort with corrupt local officials and industrialists the crime syndicate has for years been illegally disposing of sensitive materials. Great damage has been caused to the environment and continues to be done as rubbish is often dumped and burnt in public spaces. Toxic waste has been mixed with cement to make buildings throughout the region as a result of the Camorra having major construction contracts as well as waste disposal. And a long running garbage crisis has occurred in the city with rubbish piling up in the streets because there is no longer any room in any of the regions landfills.

The Camorra has been able to grow almost unimpeded and with apparent impunity mainly due to its strategy of political patronage. They are often sought out by ambitious politicians, eager to utilize the clans grip on the local community to get elected. In return the family clans use their political connections to protect and assist their members and bring benefits to their territory. The heads of the major Camorra clans are power brokers in both local and national politics.

Apocalypse Now: Fact or Fiction?

American films often sacrifice historical accuracy in order to make their plots more interesting. But should events really be changed solely for the purpose of entertainment? The film "Apocalypse Now," which is based on the book Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, is a portrayal of the Vietnam War in the year 1969. This movie is a somewhat good resource for a US history classroom because it gives viewers an almost historically accurate background of the Vietnam War and what it was like. Some names were changed and some events were made up for the purpose of the plot, but overall it gives an accurate portrayal of the war.

The movie follows Captain Benjamin Willard in his search for Colonel Walter Kurtz, whom Willard is being sent to kill. Kurtz is wanted for ordering the execution of some Vietnamese agents that he thought were double agents. On Willard's journey to find him, he ends up doing drugs and becoming more and more like Kurtz. Kurtz tells Willard the story of what he did to make himself wanted by other army officials, and Willard takes it as Kurtz asking him to kill him.

Captain Benjamin Willard is the main character in the film, but it turns out that he was not actually a Captain in the Vietnam War. The actual person Willard is inspired by is named Marlow. The only misrepresentation in the film, though, is the name. Willard does all the same things in the film that Marlow actually did in the war. In the film and in real life, they were sent to terminate Colonel Kurtz. Another difference, though, is in the way that Kurtz dies.

Colonel William E. Kurtz is accurately represented in the movie as he was in real life. In the film, Willard kills him when Kurtz basically asks him to. However, in actual events, Kurtz has gone insane and ends up dying on the trip back. He had been in Korea and had an extremely impressive, even perfect, career. At the age of 38, he wanted airborne training, and he returned to Vietnam in 1966.

Operation Archangel was established in October of 1967 according to the film. Accordingly, this is also when it was established in history. The operation was created by the air force to come up with a new airplane that would be better than the U-2 that was already in use. They wanted something that would travel higher and faster. The result of Operation Archangel was the A-12 aircraft.

In the film, Willard and some of the men in the crew on his boat used drugs like LSD during the war. In the actual war, marijuana was the first drug used by American soldiers when they got over to Vietnam because it was the most abundant, and Vietnam did not have any well defined or enforced drug laws at the time. Other drugs that were widely available to soldiers at this time were opium, morphine, Binoctal, and heroin. Heroin was very widely available to the US forces during this time. It seemed that while at war, most of the men who were using these drugs would not have ever used them at home.

"Apocalypse Now" gives a good basic overview of what the Vietnam War was like, however there are several historical inaccuracies that could prevent it from being a good aid in teaching US history in a classroom.

Pineapple Express Review

From the Creators of Superbad, one walks into this movie with high expectations. Usually high expectations lead to disappointment however in this case it delivers just what was expected. As the theme of the movie is centered around weed, it wouldn't be doing the movie justice to just walk in with a coke and popcorn. No for this movie you must be intoxicated (well at least a little bit).

The movie is centered around two stoners (Seth Rogan and James Franco) who witness a murder and are on the run from the “mob boss”. No matter how difficult the situation these two mates always get through, whether high or not.

I am more personal note, as I don't wish to spoil any aspect of the movie, I will take you through just what the hell kind of impression this movie had on me. In my personal opinion I believe this to be one of Seth Rogan's worse movie, he doesn't seem to be breaking into any new ground, but it begs the question “does he need to?” . With the huge success of Superbad and Knocked up many people are anticipating much more from pineapple express, I found it much more enjoyable to watch trying to forget these previous films hilarity and just watch it for what it was. Nevertheless even when going in with high standards I doubt it will fail to have you wetting your pants at least twice.

It has been compared to Harold and Kumar, as both films are centred around weed, but many viewers believe Seth Rogan's take on it to have surpassed it. While watching this movie I found much like Superbad, the first 20-30 minutes so jam packed with humour that the second half of the movie cannot compete (or maybe I was sober for the second half). I believe this movie is a must see and I wish I could give more information, but I wish not to ruin the movie for the rest of you. The only advice I give is either go in baked, or loosen your expectations a bit. All in all it was a great movie, and a must see.

Would You be Bedazzled by Seven Wishes?

Bedazzled is a very funny, colorful and well made production. Liz Hurley is hilarious as the Devil who offers Elliot Richards (Brendan Fraser) 7 wishes in exchange for his mortal soul. There's more than a touch of Faust here.

He has to sign a contract to get his wishes.

Elliot is not much of a success with the ladies and tends to be the butt of jokes from his colleagues, so when Liz comes on to him, he can't believe his luck. He has had a secret crush on co-worker Alison Gardner for ages and he has tried all ways to make her notice him.

Elliot wishes to be very rich and ends up as a Columbian drug baron who can speak fluent Spanish. Then he asks to be made more sensitive and ends up crying at everything from a sunset to a poem. Alison doesn't want this,of course, it's too much.

He asks to me made extra smart and ends up super intelligent but gay. Then he decides that perhaps he could attract Alison if he was a basket ball star but ends up lacking in certain areas. He's still not what Alison wants.

When everything fails and Elliot gets arrested for causing a disturbance in a church he ends up in jail where a stranger tells him that he couldn't make a deal with the devil for his soul because its not his to give, it's God's. So, Elliot confronts the Lady Devil with this and is freed from the contract.

There's lots of Hollywood glitz and glamor around the different roles played by Brendan Fraser but her caries them off quite amusingly, if not convincingly.

This film runs for ninety minutes and it is really funny. It's a good one to sit down and relax with. Although Brendan Fraser acts out all his different roles in an amusing and competent way, in my book, Liz Hurley gets all the prizes. She is sexy, hilariously funny and convincing as the Prince, or rather, the Princess of Darkness.

Romanzo Criminale

Amidst their progress, which, takes place over twenty-five years, is the intertwined criminal history of Modern Italy. Kidnappings, terrorist attacks and government corruption are just some of the central events surrounding the ruthless and highly organized gang, as they become Rome's most inexorable, cut-throat family.

During these twenty-five years, Police Lieutenant Scialoia follows the mob in an attempt to bring them to justice, despite their numerous evasions with prison, thanks to ties with the Italian Intelligence Services.

The cast boasts terrific performances, particularly Pierfranesco Favino as Ringleader "The Lebanese," and Anne Mouglalis as a modern day femme fatale, expediently balancing the right amount of danger and desirability.

An Italian GoodFellas meets gangster Pulp Fiction in this first rate mobster movie.
