Lars Von Trier directs this intense drama about the life of a Czechoslovakian immigrant (Bjork) settled in the US (Washington State) who is slowly but surely going blind due to a genetic flaw. Her only motive in life is to get enough money to get her son to undergo an eye operation so that he can be saved the same fate as hers.

To achieve this she works as a factory worker and saves almost all her wages. Here the only real friend she has is another factory worker (Catherine Deneuve) who is her companion to Hollywood musicals.

The other passion that she has is to be a dancer in a local play which is doing a version of “The Sound of Music”. This passion soon has to be given up due to the fact that she can no longer see well enough to move about.

Bjork's life takes a fatal turn once her landlord, (David Morse) who is swamped in debt due to his wife's extravagant lifestyle, gets to know about her savings and finds out her secret hiding place. Morse steals this money to pay for his mortgage and then blames Bjork of infidelity to save face in front of his wife.

After a really gruesome and painful scene in which Bjork's character has to kill Morse to save him from shame and from losing face we have her on the run for being a murderer.

To discuss more about the movie would be to give you the entire plot and spoil the effect of the movie itself.

It would rather be best at this point to encourage you to watch the film for yourself and decide why this musical can be considered to be one of the finest ever made in the realm of dark cinema.

A word of caution here. Please do not attempt to watch this movie if you are feeling down already... believe me this movie has the potential to really drag you down to rock bottom if you can feel the pathos behind the theme. So go ahead and watch it and see what you think for yourself.
