Review of W

Today, I unexpectedly had a chance to catch a movie at the cinema. From the choices of Body of Lies, Madgascar, or High School Musical 3, my companions decided on W. Walking into the premise, I honestly had no idea of what kind of movie I would be seeing. My buddy told me it would be funny, and my other friend stubbornly told me it was most definitely NOT funny.

After seeing it, I would say that it is mildly funny, but it is a fairly accurate picture of what most Americans think of the Bush, Jr., Presidency. With that said, flashing pictures of 9/11 and the many government legislations that have tore the rights out of the Bill of Rights come to mind. However, this film also shows the hardships that our beloved president George Bush had to face. Personally, I am very open-minded, and before I've seen this movie I have always thought that there is always a redeemable trait in a person. Mr. Bush here is no exception.

This movie has opened my eyes to the background of our president, and it is quite an interesting story. Alocholic and unable to keep any job, George W. Bush has had problems from the start of his college career. HIs father had to constantly bail him out of rather tough situations that include his drunk driving. Following in the footsteps of his great ex-president father and his brother Jed, Bush had always fallen short to their great standards. This movie shows how Mr. Bush went from zero to being a president; quite a success story. To do this, the movie uses subtitles to switch from Bush's college and post-college life to his presidency days, and it does this effectively. In the beginning of the movie, we see Mr. Bush and his cabinet discussing terrorism as Americans would disappointingly expect. However, by the end of the movie, with knowledge of Bush's hardships and accomplishments, the audience can now look up to him as a hero. He may have made some bad decisions in office, but ultimately he never backed down-honor, something that most Americans seem to lack.

Another great aspect of the movie, the musical score is exemplary at painting the mood for each situation and conflict. From original orchestrated melodies to arrangements of American songs, the musical score has been well-thought and compiled, and the emotions felt from when George W. Bush faces hardships reflect that mentality.

The one thing I did not like is the subtle jokes used in the movie. Not only were they often profane and vulgar, I felt that the movie would have been better off without them. These jokes seem out of place and, for example, one of the jokes makes fun of Colin Powell's choice to not run for president.

Overall, this movie has much going for it. If you haven't gone out to see it, I highly recommend it. Though Bush is not gone yet from the coveted White House, this movie does a great job of encompassing Bush's life.

Stop-Loss Policy

Forcing citizens to volunteer their services? That's a confusing concept. John Kerry called it a “back-door” draft. I call it a somewhat sly policy. The “stop-loss” is an involuntary extension of a server's contract of enlistment. Stop-loss had been enforced on more than 50,000 soldiers by the Bush Administration.

Despite the amount of time already served and a contracted end date reached, many soldiers are being redeployed to Iraq. The stop loss can be repeated and, therefore, can trap soldiers into several more years of service.

“We are fortunate to have a group of men and women all-volunteer force, who voluntarily put on the uniform and go in harm's way,” Vice President Cheney said in a recent ABC interview.

But when asked about those who are involuntarily forced to return to war, he just responded “they signed up wanting to be involved in defending the country” and “wanting to see developments”. Apparently, the idea that some may not want to be forced to return to Iraq isn't as important as “developments”.

On March 28, the MTV motion picture “Stop-loss” released depicting the reality of these tragic experiences. It passionately portrays the story of a Lieutenant returning to his home in Texas. After only being in Texas for a few days, he immediately receives a “stop-loss” to return to Iraq. The government refuses to help him and he finds no way out of the Army. Already suffering from mental and emotional distress, he is forced to return to Iraq.

This passionately portrayed film starring Ryan Phillippe is nothing but strong and stirring. But what is most striking to me is the lack of knowledge some Americans possess on the Bush Administration and its action. Many college students are unaware of the stop loss policy. A USA Today survey showed that nearly half of Americans said they were only “somewhat familiar” with the Patriot Act passed back in 2001. Hopefully this movie will education and motivate Americans to realize the injustices of the stop loss policy.

A Movie Review of Lions for Lambs

I enjoyed the movie “Lions for Lambs”, right up to the ending. Unfortunately, the ending did not live up to the rest of the movie.

This is a Robert Redford film, and his left wing political views are in full presentation here. But “Lions for Lambs” doesn't merely spout left wing rhetoric; it examines both sides of the political system's role in the conflict in Iraq.

I was caught up in the political tension, and I was caught up in the terror of two soldiers who find themselves injured and at the mercy of advancing enemy soldiers.

I wanted all the characters in the movie to be forced into definitive action. I wanted a convergence of the journalist, the senator, the professor and the student. I wanted the fabric of tension to be pulled so tight, that when it snapped, my breath would catch in my throat.

But that didn't happen. Instead, after all the characters had spent their dialogue, the movie just stopped. It didn't end; it just stopped.

This could have been an important movie. It could have been a movie that defined a generation's position in this political climate. It could have been another “The Deer Hunter”.

Unfortunately, it's just a good movie with a bad ending.

The Valley of Elah

I usually don't write about movies, but I recently watched this movie, starring Tommy Lee Jones. For everyone who has not seen this movie, it's a must see. It tells the story about a father, played by Tommy Lee Jones, searching for his missing son who just returned from Iraq.

The movie is based on real events, and it shows some of the things soldiers go through while at war, and how hard things are when they return home.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this movie, since I usually don't like war movies. In The Valley Of Elah isn't really a war movie. I really hit home on telling the story of a single family dealing with the loss of life during a war. It shows us how messed up war can be; not only during combat, but having to deal with life once they return to the United States.

It made me realize how much our soldiers are sacrificing for our country, on a war that should not even be going on.

I'm not going to get into the politics of the war in Iraq, all I am going to say is I disagree with why our men and women are over there. Watching this movie just brings it all into prospective. All I can say is, if you have not seen this movie, take the time and watch it.
