Then She Found Me: A Review

Helen Hunt's feature film directorial debut has a lot going for it. Her all-star cast (herself, Bette Midler, Colin Firth, and Matthew Broderick) doles out the dark humor in a love story that spans the gamut of love through romance, family, and friendship. With an assortment of anti-heroes and a tender, mildly relatable plot, Then She Found Me aspired to be the Indie film of the year.

It wasn't. It wasn't the worst either, of course. While I'm slow to judge films that were based on books I haven't read, I'll say that my problem wasn't at all with the story so much as the plot structure, the acting, and the dialog.

This film, simply, belongs on stage. At least the way it's structured currently. It's in two acts (a film should be in three), it takes too long to get into the meat of the story, and it wraps up quickly and awfully. I was waiting for a curtain call.

The acting is too dramatic, especially in Midler and Broderick- both are amazing stage performers, but need to stay in their element. Hunt, it seems, is still used to sitcom acting, and leaves something to be desired in her weak performance. Firth is really the only one to bring the cinematic into the film. He is the only one of the four who adds emotional dimension to his character.

The dialog is too fast for an Indie film. It brings the completely unrealistic “Gilmore Girls element” of too-quick banter to something that should be and could easily be more realistic. Again, this kind of dialog belongs on the stage, where quick witty words would bring down the house. I just had a hard time following it.

Where we should have been sympathizing, we were straining our ears, and where we should have been empathizing, we were rolling our eyes in skepticism.

All in all, it was not a waste of time, but it was time I'd rather have spent in a theatre watching the story live. The story could be adapted for stage with ease, and should have been adapted better for film.

The Dos and Don'ts of a Hero

The standard of what the audience will accept, that is to say a successful heroic figure belongs in an archetype, the archetype of the hero. According to Shawn J. Wittmier in his article “The Archetypal Hero in Modern Mass Media,” in order for the hero to be part of this archetype he or she must follow seven set lines. These lines are what the Hollywood movies and television series that are successful follow when portraying their heroes, both male and female. If these lines are not observed, the movie or television show will fail to be accepted by the public, as it happened with movies like “Elektra” and “Catwoman,” for example.

The secret of the fascination for heroes that Hollywood has been able to create lies in a secret: the stories in those movies have the power to take us to another place where we are both ourselves and at the same time we are somebody else, somebody stronger, since heroes possess all of the human attributes only amplified. This characteristic is what turns them into role models and archetypes, in which the values of intelligence, loyalty, courage, beauty and goodness reach their highest point. Umberto Eco, an Italian semiologist, once wrote that “the positive hero must embody, besides all of the imaginable limits, the strength exigencies that the regular citizen feeds on and cannot satisfy” This would be the simplest explanation, or maybe just one, of why people like action heroes. But what we must find out is why people like female action heroes.

Let us then examine Wittmier's lines and what movies have fulfilled them, which ones did not, and finally what seems to be the ultimate result. The lines that Wittmier proposes are mentioned below, each one followed by a possible explanation as to how they apply to a few movies and television shows featuring female action heroes:

The hero usually suffers a great loss, which makes him [or her] set off on a quest.

In “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” we learn that her father had died several years ago, which is an episode that deeply affects Lara. He had died in the battlefield and she never had a chance to say goodbye, which is what makes her feel worse. So when she learns about the Triangle of Light, she goes on the quest of trying to acquire it before anybody else can, namely Manfred Powell, so that she can get her chance of seeing her father one more time and saying good bye.

In “Charlie's Angels” the loss and/or the knowledge of a future loss is what sets them off on their quest. Eric Knox and Vivian Wood had teamed up to find Charlie and kill him. Even though the Angels had never seen Charlie, he was like a father to them. Besides, the former two had kidnapped Bosley, the girls' friend and “boss,” to use him as bait to find Charlie, so that was a loss they had already experienced. These two losses triggered their going after the bad guys and stop them.

Sidney Bristow, the main character from the television show “Alias,” suffered several losses in the duration of the series: the first one was her fiancé's murder, then came her friend Francie's murder, her friend Will Tippin's having to go to witness protection program, her mother's betrayal, Dixon's wife's murder, and many more. All of these losses led to her trying to find the ones responsible for all of that and either take them in custody or kill them. Moreover, when she finds out that she had a sister, which was in a way also a loss because she had lost the opportunity of sharing her life with her, she sets on a quest to go and find her.

If we take a look at “Catwoman,” for example, her quest differs from the previous three. She was killed by order of Laurel Hedare, the owner of the company she was designing for. After a cat mysteriously revives her, she sets on a quest to try and find who killed her, and take revenge. However, she did not really lose anything because after all she is alive now. They did take her life however, but she came back much stronger than before and in the end she likes it, so she gained more than she lost.

The hero generally has a mentor or helper who helps him [or her] on his quest.

Lara Croft requires the help of Mr. Wilson, a friend of the family and archaeologist, so that he can explain to her what the clock that she had found was for. Moreover, she has Bryce, the computer and technological expert, to provide her with gadgets of all kinds to both help her train and to make her quests easier.

The Angels have Bosley who helps them whenever they need him. He does so by communicating then with Charlie, working undercover with them, and basically helping them however he can, like he did for example at the end of the movie when he found the means of transport.

Sidney Bristow counts on Marshall's help, the software experts of the CIA. He is also in charge of inventing state-of-the-art devices that help her in her missions. Moreover, her father, who works with her at the agency, functions as a mentor to her.

Patience Phillips discovers a sort of mentor after she becomes Catwoman. This person is the woman who owns Midnight, the cat that revived and converted Patience. The woman gives her information about what exactly happened to her and what the story behind catwomen really is. After Patience collected all this knowledge she decides how to go on with her new life.

The hero must face a set of trials, which allow him [or her] to overcome “evil”.

Lara Croft faces, among other obstacles, stone monkey soldiers, a giant stone goddess, and most of all Manfred Powell who, she learns, had killed her father. After she fights him especially, she overcomes evil, that is to say, she is relieved of that calamity that surrounded her, and moves on triumphant.

Dylan, Natalie and Alex faced a bombing terrorist, men who were hired to kill them, and Knox and Wood whom they had to defeat. They had success in every one of these tasks, and in this way they not only faced but also vanquish the malevolence of their enemies.

Sidney Bristow had to face her fiancé's death, her mother's betrayal, and having to work undercover for an organization the CIA was investigating, among other tasks. Despite of those calamitous experiences, she could work out the situation victoriously.

Catwoman does not seem to undergo any trials. We could say that when she was acting as Patience she had to lie to the man she liked, police officer Tom Lone, not to reveal her other identity, since there was an order issued by the force to catch Catwoman. In the end, he finds out who she is and then understands that she was not guilty of what she had been accused. However, this trial does not seem to be on the same level and the previous three.

The hero narrowly escapes death, usually more than once.

Lara escapes from death many times: from the robot at the beginning of the movie, from the men that break into her house to steal the clock, from the stone creatures in Cambodia, and from Manfred Powell.

The Angels evade death from two bombs, a shoot out, many different men that intended to kill them, and of course from Eric Knox and Vivian Wood.

Sidney Bristow is probably the one who faced death the most. She was even once captured by the North Koreans and was about to be executed when someone saved her. Moreover, she faced many shoot-outs, had to dismantle bombs with Marshall's help, engaged in serious physical combat repeatedly, besides the fact that she is constantly working undercover and that alone puts her in considerable danger if she is ever to be caught.

In “Catwoman,” the hero-to-be Patience actually dies before she transforms from the regular woman into Catwoman. After that episode, even though she is under attack in several occasions she does not seem to think she is in any danger, she became fearless so she does not believe she is facing death. However, she does become frightened once at the end of the movie after Laurel Hedare stabs her, but she quickly recovers from it and wins the fight.

The hero escapes the “evil villain's” stronghold or destroys him [or her].

When Lara is fighting Manfred Powell, the evil villain, she ends up killing him.

All of the Angels escape the attacks of the villains, included the attacks by the main villain, Knox, who dies due to the Angels' intelligence and expertise.

Sidney Bristow, even though sometimes she is kept hostage or caught by the villains, always ends up being rescued or escapes by her own means. Furthermore, she sometimes also destroys the villains, like she did with Lauren, one of the most evil villains in the show.

Catwoman fights the movie's evil villain Laurel Hedare at the end of the movie, which concludes with the latter's accidental death.

The hero is then reintegrated into society with a new status, wealth, or marriage to the princess.

This point, even though it seems more to apply to a medieval novel, may apply on these movies as well if we take the basic meaning of the line, which is that after the hero has finished his or her quest there is a change or a reward for them.

In the case of Lara Croft, after she undergoes her quest and returns home, she seems happier and satisfied. So much so that she decides to put on a dress to visit her father's grave, like a sort of homage to him since she had flatly refused to wear that same dress before when Hillary the buttler offered - which, judging by the way she answered him when he did, it made us believe that she always refuses because that is not her style.

The Angels, after escaping death, rescuing Bosley and saving Charlie seem to be more appreciated by him and they are given well deserved vacations, therefore enjoying some kind of new status.

As for Sidney Bristow, one of her many quests, one of the most significant ones for her, was to save her love interest Michael Vaughn from his wife's clutches, Lauren, who was a traitor. She pretended to be a CIA agent when she actually worked for a criminal organization. She married Vaughn to obtain extra information from the agency that was of great importance for the organization she worked for. When Sidney finally defeats her and saves Vaughn, she gains him back (they used to be a couple) and starts a new chapter in her life as regards her relationship with him.

In “Catwoman,” after Patience dies and is revived she returns to society with a completely new status: as a catwoman.

There has to be a happy ending.

In “Tomb Raider,” Lara achieves her goal of seeing her father one more time and she also destroys the man who killed him, to then return to her normal life.

In “Charlie's Angels,” the girls save Charlie and they go on well-deserved vacations.

In “Alias” Sydney and Vaughn live happily ever after.

In “Catwoman,” Patience takes revenge on the woman who tried to kill her, and her reputation is cleared. She decides to go on saving other people who may need her help, although by doing so she leaves her boyfriend because she prefers to focus on saving other people. That ending is not so happy for him.

As we can see, “Catwoman” did not fulfill all of these rules established by Wittmier, and incidentally it is the one of the movies that did not receive a good acceptance neither by the critics nor the audience. Wittmier adds that “heroes must strictly follow the pattern of hero archetype in order to receive acceptance. Any deviation from this pattern leads to undermining the character's familiarity and acceptability.” This is exactly what happened to “Catwoman:” since the main character did not follow the archetype she was not accepted too well.

However, this list is not the only one that has been created or researchers have come up with; Christina Larson presented her own list in her article “Seven Mistakes Superheroines Make: Why the Latest Action-babe Flicks Flopped.” According to her, every female action hero that has broken at least one of the rules she mentions has failed to receive a positive reception by the audience. Those rules are:

Do fight demons. Don't fight only inner demons.

Do play well with others. Don't shun human society.

Do exhibit self-control. Don't exhibit mental disorders.

Do wear trendy clothes. Don't wear fetish clothes.

Do embrace girl power. Don't cling to man hatred.

Do help hapless men. Don't try to kill your boyfriend.

Do toss off witty remarks. Don't look perpetually sullen.

Let us analyze two of the movies featuring female action heroes that have failed to be accepted by the majority of society, and check if what Larson claims is true. In “Catwoman,” Patience Phillips ends up shunning human society when she decides to leave all of her life behind, including her boyfriend, to save people in danger. Moreover, she does wear fetish clothes. “Elektra” also wears fetish clothes, she does exhibit mental disorders and is sullen rather than witty. Moreover, she seems to struggle too much with her inner demons, and at least at the beginning she did shun human society. We do not see any of these rules broken neither in “Tomb Raider” nor in “Charlie's Angels,” or even in “Alias,” even when Alex from “Charlie's Angels” and Sidney from “Alias” have been shown wearing fetish clothes, but that was only as a cover in a mission, not because that is what they had chosen to wear emblematically. We can conclude, then, that Larson was indeed right: if a female action hero breaks any of the rules mentioned above, the audience, that is to say society, will not accept them or the movie or television show will flop.

Moreover, there is also a key to a good action movie, as Stephanie Mencimer states in her article “Violent Femmes.” She assures that there should be “an inverse relationship between the amount of special effects and the amount of dialogue. Talk too much and the heroine loses her mystique and starts to remind men of their ex-wives.” Here lies another mistake that “Catwoman” made. Patience talks too much in comparison to Lara Croft or Charlie's Angels. In addition, the movie puts a lot of emphasis on the sentimental relationship between Patience and Tom Lone, and also on what happens within Patience herself as she undergoes and tries to cope with the changes that turned her into Catwoman. After including this entire dilemma there is not a lot of action in the movie, not as much as in other action movies which have been successful.

Monsters, Inc.: Just Another Day at Work

Time: 1 hour 33 minutes

Rating: Kids say it's a must-own

Major Players

James P. Sullivan voiced by John Goodman

Mike Wazowski voiced by Billy Crystal

Boo voiced by Mary Gibbs

Monsters, Inc. is the local corporation responsible for providing Monstropolis with power. One of the most coveted jobs in the land is that of best scarer, a title currently held by James P. Sullivan, lovingly known as Sully. His assistant is Mike Wazowski, the best tank and door changer in the business. Mike, however, is not always timely with his paperwork. This forgetfulness leaves Sully alone on the scare floor one night, where he discovers that a door has been left unattended. Sully opens the door to see if anybody is working, only to find himself face to face with a human child, known to be toxic and feared by monsters above all else.

Sully falls victim to the child, which he names Boo, as she makes her way through the land of Monstropolis wreaking havoc and mayhem. With the help of his assistant, he seeks only to return her to the safety of her bedroom and rid himself of the burden. Along the way, Sully finds that humans are not toxic or scary, and this particular human is quite adorable.

Sully and Mike uncover a plot to kidnap children, starting with Boo, in a last ditch effort to save the power grid of Monstropolis by creating a continual supply of screams that will be extracted from the kidnapped children by machine instead of the old fashioned way of scaring them in their beds at night. They also discover that there is a far more powerful source of energy to be had if only knew how.

Sully discovers a love deep within himself that pushes him to fight to protect his precious Boo against all the obstacles and dangers that may befall her. In the end, love and friendship save the day while treachery and deception are uncovered.

Viewers will wonder what will happen next as they sit on the edge of their seat waiting for the next twist. With so much excitement and adventure, even the adults will enjoy watching this movie, which is good because this movie will be watched - over and over and over and over....

Parent's Note: There is some minor to moderate cartoon violence and off-color jokes.

Tribute to the Most Beautiful Action Heroines

Even though Trinity from the Matrix trilogy is a science fiction character, she has a very complex personality. Compared to other super heroines she is vulnerable and eventually she dies twice: once in the Matrix, where she is resurrected by Neo; and once in the real word, close to the Machine's city. Her love for Neo is so great that she can revive Neo when he is shot in the Matrix by agent Smith. In the second part of the series she enters the Matrix to help Neo, even though her action is dramatically and brutally sanctioned by the agents.

Ironically the clip from the “Last Legion” starts with Aurelius (Colin Firth) asking Mira (Aishwarya Rai) to fight with the villains who are following both of them. Considering that men are supposed to protect women, this request is quite unusual, but Mira is special: she is an extremely skilful and fast warrior. The fighting scene is very spectacular and allows us to admire Mira's exotic beauty.

The next clip is interpreted by actress Ha Ji-won as Detective Namsoon and Dong Wong as Ahn in the last scene from a Korean movie called “The Duellist”. After a decisive battle between the Police and a corrupted gang, Namsoon is told that Ahn, her enemy, and also her secret love, is dead. Distressed, she returns to places where she had encountered him. Unexpectedly, the duellist appears in front of her and they start to fight again. The beauty of the duel resides in the tender way they express their feelings during performing highly dangerous martial arts movements. An eye witness describes the fight “like an act of love making”.

Many parts of the movie “Aeon Flux” are subtle cat walks in which Charlise Therone's beauty is enhanced by sexy futuristic clothes. Aeon Flux's intelligence, dignity, self control and flexibility contribute to making her an attractive character.

I cannot imagine a better choice than Angelina Jolie for Lara Croft. Without her there would be neither Lara Croft nor a successful “Tomb Raider” film. When I watched the movie I never had the feeling that anything bad can happen to the heroine, but honestly I really enjoyed the movie because of Angelina's very pleasant appearance.

Uma Thurman, interpreting the Bride, was also a very good choice for the Kill Bill series. There are many things that make the Bride a super-heroine: her commitment to survive at all cost even when she has very few chances, for instance when she is buried alive; her uncanny mental power, for instance when she heals her paralyses; or her swordsman skills, when she confronts the Crazy 88s.

I choose the scene from the Japanese restaurant because her eyes express both her suffering and willpower. Listen the music carefully. the first part emphasizes the protest against the way she was treated, while the second part, after she cuts the secretary's arm, shows her determination to confront O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu).

Mei, interpreted by Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang, in the “House of the Flying Daggers” becomes a super-heroine exactly for the reason that she doesn't pretend to be one. She is more delicate than other heroines, but she is able to show much fortitude, courage and love that make her a more charismatic heroine than those who just kill endless gangs of rogues.

The movie “Elektra”, having Jennifer Garner as the main protagonist, continues the storyline of the film Daredevil, wherein Elektra is killed by an evil man called Bullseye. Sensei Stick, who masters a martial art that allows him to foresee the future and control life and death, revives and trains Elektra to fight the evil paranormal gang called the Hand. As she is a person who came back from the death, Elektra has a subtle darkness side and a dramatic appearance that gives her a unique aura among the other heroines.

In the Fifth element Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) is a sort of goddess who has to unify the energy of air, water, earth and fire in an ancient Egyptian temple in order to destroy the Evil that menaces Earth. As goddess she can easily fight evil aliens, but her true nature is love and compassion.

Mean Girls

Many teenagers feel it is important to belong to a certain group or have a certain "look" or stereotype to fit in. For example everyone in the high school in "Mean Girls" fits into a set category, such as "The plastics", Preps, J.V jocks, Asian nerds, Burn outs, Cool Asians, Girls who eat their feelings, Girls who don't eat anything, sexually active band geeks, and the art freaks. This is similar to most youths, as many feel it is a necessity to fit into a group of some kind. Some typical groups in today's society are; chavs, grungers, emo's or goths, and most youths belong to one of these groups.

If teenagers do not belong to a group, some may feel like misfits, such as Cady in "Mean Girls". When Cady first arrives she is very different to all the other students at the school. She wears unusual clothes, which are not seen as "cool", has a different attitude and does not know any of the rules, such as where to sit in class. In many ways for Cady this is a brand new way of life, things she did not have to do in Africa, such as to ask for a lavatory pass, are obvious things to do in America.

There are many reasons why teenagers may want to infiltrate a group, such as peer pressure, pressure to fit in with society or simply because they have shared interests and hobbies as other people in the group. In "Mean Girls" ,originally, her so-called friends push Cady into joining the "Plastics" as they tell her it will be "fun" to find out about what they talk about behind closed doors. Cady suffers from peer pressure from Damien and Janice, as at first she does not want to fit in with the plastics and is against the idea, but they pursuade her into thinking it is a good plan. However after the leader of the plastics steals the boy Cady had her eye on, Cady quickly decides to take revenge on her by wedging her way closer into the group. Cadys then realises after a while that she enjoys being in the plastics, everyone knows her name and everyone wants to copy her style.

To fit in with their chosen groups, many people have to change be it their appearance, personality or likes and dislikes. Teenagers may feel pressure to change what they look like to fit in with the others around them, as they think if they are different or unique they will not be acceptable. For example in "Mean Girls" when Cady first arrives she is a misfit and is forced to eat her lunch in a toilet cubicle, as she does not fit in with any of the groups.

When Cady begins to join the plastics she changes her whole image; her hair styles, her clothes, her make-up and her whole attitude to life. She almost becomes a clone of the other three plastics. To fit in with others many people find they have to sacrifice their individuality, they feel under pressure to look, talk and behave like the other members. If people are pressured to fit in with others around them, everyone ends up fitting into an exact category, and no one is individual and unique.

There are many messages incorporated into this film, one of the most important is that you should always stay true to yourself and shouldn't have to change for anyone. This is shown throughout the film in many ways, such as Cady being miserable in the plastics and at the end, when she is back to her normal self, she has more friends and is happy, as she feels comfortable as she is. It is once said in the film that " she knew it was better to be in the plastics hating life, than to not be in the plastics at all." This is a perfect example of the pressure teens feel to fit in, they will even be miserable just so they can be liked.

Some other messages in this film are; that infact it doesn't matter what you look like, people like you for the way you are; making fun of someone is pointless, it doesn't make you or them feel better; and that nobody is perfect no matter what clothes they wear or how many friends they have.

In conclusion, there are many ways, in which society forces teenagers to feel the need to fit in with others, but youths should feel confident in them selves and not have to turn into clone-like stereotypes. Everyone should have the right to feel confident in his or her individuality.

Chick Flick Recipe

Girl meets boy, Boy meets girl.

He/she is instantly attracted (repulsed).
But
He/she has some baggage; or they are entirely opposites who get off on the wrong foot.

He/she realizes that they are meant to be;
But
One of them (or both in extremes) has a debilitating disease,

Failed relationship (perhaps both) to overcome before both can ride off into the sunset together happily ever after.

Good chick flicks evolve around emotions. Mostly love/hate at first. It is imperative the ending should be happy. But as in the case of Philadelphia the main participant may not make it to the end.

Any movie that can stir the romantic side of a females psyche will qualify as a good chick flick.
Oh and don't forget the heroine is always the winner.

Note: boy must be gorgeous yet manly at the same time perhaps with a slight fault in his make up, a slight facial tic or stammer to start, the girl must always appear to be either completely in control or totally useless, mediocre is not an option; oh yes and she must always be “normal”.

Seven Upcoming Movies That Will Make You Love 3D

Sadly, nobody believes this unless they actually see a stereoscopic (the technical name for 3D) flick for themselves. So here are several of the most promising, upcoming 3D movies that are sure to make you a believer.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Brendan Frasier plays Trevor Anderson, a scientist who goes on a journey to Iceland to find his missing brother. Trevor, his nephew Josh, and their mountain guide discover a cave that leads them unwillingly into the center of the earth just as it was described by Jules Verne.

Journey is the first live action feature film to be filmed and release in digital 3D, and the first feature project for the Pace/Cameron Fusion camera system. The movie is directed by the Oscar winning visual effects supervisor Eric Brevig, who worked on a slew of Hollywood action movies including The Island, The Day After Tomorrow, Pearl Harbor, and Total Recall.

Trailer

Official Site

Release Date: July 11th 2008

Bolt

Bolt is a dog with his own hit TV show. He spends his days pretending to battle villains with his canine superpowers. However, Bolt thinks it's all real. After an unfortunate mishap thrusts Bolt out into the real world, he embarks on a mission to save his on-screen ally Penny. But along the way, Bolt will learn that the world he knew is not the world he lives in.

Bolt will be released with the same 3D animation technology as Disney's earlier stereoscopic movies Meet the Robinsons, and Chicken Little, and will also feature the voices of John Travolta, Malcolm McDowell, and Miley Cyrus.

Trailer

Release Date:	November 26th 2008

The Dark Country

A newlywed couple traveling to their honeymoon in Las Vegas, stumbles across a corpse which transforms their trip into the vacation from hell.

Starring Ron Pearlman, Lauren German, and Thomas Jane (who also directs), Dark Country is the silver screen adaptation of the graphic novel by the same name. This will be the second live action 3D feature film (after Journey) and will be the first horror movie to use modern 3D technology. Dark Country may also be the first stereoscopic movie that isn't safe for the kids.

Release Date:	2008

Coraline

Coraline (pronounced core-ah-line) is a young girl who stumbles upon a hidden tunnel in her house which leads to a parallel universe that is oddly similar to her own. Although fun at first, this new world quickly becomes dangerous for Coraline when she realizes that getting back to her own world may not be so simple.

Coraline is adapted from the Hugo award winning novel by the same name and will feature the voices of Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher. The movie is directed by Henry Selick, who also directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, (most people think it was Tim Burton). Coraline features the same style of stop motion animation that Nightmare did only this time, it's in three dimensions.

Trailer

Release Date: February 6th 2009

Up

Up is the story of Carl, a geriatric protagonist, and Russell, the young explorer who helps Carl get up and out of his everyday life, and see the world he has always dreamed of.

Up is the next animated film project for Pixar Studios, which is probably the most successful animation studio out there. Although Wall-E will be a very hard act to follow, Up, combined with stereoscopic imagery, should be a breathtaking experience.

Release Date:	May 29th 2009

Toy Story

Yes, the movie that got Pixar where it is today. Toy Story was Pixar's first feature film and was nominated for three Oscars when it released. However, Toy Story didn't make this list just because it's Toy Story. It made the list in order to raise awareness that Pixar will be re-releasing Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D by the end of 2009. Not to mention that, beginning with the above, all Pixar films will be in 3D including Toy Story 3 which is planned for early 2010.

Trailer (original)

Release Date: October 2nd 2009

Avatar

In the distant future, Jake, a war veteran, travels to a far away planet known as Alpha Centauri B-4. There he comes to know the native people called the Na'vi, and the dangerous alien power their planet holds.

Avatar is James Cameron's newest brain child which he has developed specifically to be made in 3D. Cameron, along with friend and cinematographer Vince Pace developed the Pace/Cameron fusion camera system specifically for this movie. If that name sounds familiar it's because it is the same technology behind Journey to the Center of the Earth.

However Avatar is being produced with a much larger budget, and state of the art special effects, something people have come to expect from James Cameron who's past flicks include both Terminator movies, Aliens, True Lies, Tthe Abyss and Titanic. Judging from the buzz in the industry, Avatar sounds like it could be the turning point for 3D cinema.

Release Date:	December 18th 2009

The Dive

James Cameron believes in 3D so whole heartedly, that he has been quoted as saying all of his movies from now on will be stereoscopic. Between Avatar and its sequel, Battle Angel, Cameron will be writing and directing a small budget romantic drama based on the true story of Cuban free diver Francisco Ferreras. James Cameron's thesis with this movie is to show that stereoscopic cinema is not just for gimmicks. He plans to show people that modern 3D movies are an incredibly immersive experience that 3D works for big budget action as well as small, dramatic narratives.

Release Date: TBA

Modern 3D movies are absolutely stunning to look at, and provide a far more immersive experience than regular movies. This is especially true in IMAX theatres where the sound is all encompassing and the screen takes up most of your vision. Either way, IMAX or no, be sure to check out any, if not all of these movies when they release; you'll wonder why every movie isn't 3D.

Must See: Nine Most Romantic Movies

Hey!! Guys, I have listed down 9 most romantic movies, which I can see anytime and hope most of them surely would be your best or if you haven't seen so far, you all must put them on watch list.

The Notebook

Behind every great love is a great story. Often times, a movie does well when it comes from source material like novel. An epic love story centered on a older man who reads aloud to an older woman whom he regularly visits. From a faded notebook, the old man's words bring to life the story about a couple who is separated by World War II, and is then passionately reunited, seven years later, after they have taken different paths. Though her memory has faded, his words give her the chance to relive her turbulent youth and the unforgettable love they shared. The movie revolves around the couple represents the love story that is being told by James Garner's character. He reads from a book, the story of the two lovers as they go through everything life has to offer. Gina Rowland plays the lady that he is reading to, and she gets as wrapped up in the story as we do, as he progresses from chapter to chapter in the novel he is reading. The story becomes an epic of its own, as its starts to split time between the stories being read, and the story of Garner and Rowland living in the present day. The love shown by Noah and Allie is something that envelopes us, and it makes us forget about the current story. By going back and forth, we are able to look forward to where each of the two stories is going. It leads to an ending of each story that is very emotional. It is that type of film, where we feels like a part of the story, and want them to act or say something specific, that truly makes a great story. I highly recommend seeing this romantic movie as it has everything needed for a true romantic love story.

P.S. I Love You
There has been so much discussion on this film to qualify as romantic but I think this movie takes on an emotional journey. One that everyone can relate to, losing someone you love and learning to cope with the loss is universal.

A grieving young widow discovers that her late husband has left her a list of tasks revealed in 10 messages, delivered anonymously, intended to ease her out of grief and transition her to a new life.

PS I Love you was an excellent combination of happiness and sorrow. Its dry comedy had me laughing however, her love for him made me said as she never had taken the time to truly shown Gerry how much she loved him.

Titanic

It is being hailed as one of the best love stories depicted on film. Titanic is not only great in terms of action, effects, and visuals, but also provides excellent commentary on the issue of the class struggle.

The story is about a boy who after winning a trip on the RMS Titanic during a dockside card game, American Jack Dawson spots the society girl Rose, who is on her way to Philadelphia to marry her rich snob fiancé Cal Hockley. Rose feels helplessly trapped by her situation and makes her way to the aft deck and thinks of suicide until she is rescued by Jack. Cal is therefore obliged to invite Jack to dine at their first-class table where he suffers through the slights of his snobbish hosts. In return, he spirits Rose off to third class for an evening of dancing, giving her the time of her life. Deciding to forsake her intended future all together, Rose asks Jack, who has made his living making sketches on the streets of Paris, to draw her in the nude wearing the invaluable blue diamond Cal has given her. Cal finds out and has Jack locked away. Soon afterwards, the ship hits an iceberg and Rose must find Jack while both must run from Cal even as the ship sinks deeper into the freezing water.

It is flawlessly crafted, intelligently constructed, strongly acted and spellbinding. Its movies, which will makes you cry at the end, so must see it!!

Ghost

"Ghost" is a very engaging film. It presents a view of the after-life which is a mixture of fact and fancy. The story revolves around a merchant banker who's murdered in a street robbery and Moore is Molly Jensen, his grieving widow, left alone with her memories of their pottery table romps to the tune of "Unchained Melody". Yet there's a twist: Sam may be dead, but he's stayed on earth as a spirit in order to spend a few more moments with his beloved.

A perfect balance of laughs and tears, a sparklingly funny script and a clever fantasy about ghostly goings on make this a superior blockbuster romance. Must see this!!

Pretty Woman
Sometimes love is discovered in the most unorthodox of places. Pretty Woman is one of the best and most romantic movies ever seen by me. This is not your typical version of the Cinderella story, but a celebration of that one thing in life most of us truly want to say we have felt at one time or another, or continue to look for love. Julia Roberts and Richard generated the kind of romantic charisma and heat that only comes from being great talent. Not only are these two remarkably hot on screen but very funny in so many hilarious moments.

Pretty Woman will give that fairy-tale almost all of us women dreamed of when we were little girls, but very updated, and most likely not the way we envisioned it to be. But the real message is solid, timeless and good, and that is all right by me. Must see this!!

Gone with the Wind
The film is four hours long, and it's almost like a movie and a sequel joined together in two separate halves. The first half of the movie deals with the times before the end of the Civil War for the South, mostly setting up the love triangles and dealing with some of the horrors of the war. The second half is mostly a soapy romance, dealing with love, death and relationships when everyone tries to put the pieces of their lives back together.

Scarlett O'Hara is in love with drippy Ashley Wilkes, and is devastated when he announces that he plans to marry his cousin Melanie. She pleads with Ashley to marry her instead, but then, on the first day of the Civil War, she meets mercurial Rhett Butler. A man to match her strength of character and romantic desires, Butler changes the course of her life. Despite hunger, and the burning of Atlanta, Scarlett survives the war and its aftermath, but ultimately loses the only man she really loved. A beautiful film and a must-see for anyone who loves to fall in love.

50 First Dates

The story revolves around Henry Roth, who is a veterinarian living in Hawaii who enjoys the company of vacationing women. He leaves the playboy life behind after he falls for Lucy, who suffers from short-term memory loss. Since she can never remember meeting him, Henry has to romance Lucy every single day and hope that she falls for him. Movie has a charismatic cast of colorful characters and surprisingly creative script and a great romantic movie to watch.

When Harry Met Sally
Ultimately, When Harry Met Sally works because it dares to be slightly different from most romantic comedies. While there's nothing radical in the trajectory of Harry and Sally's romance, it's not entirely conventional.Does sex make it impossible for men and women to be true friends?

Stomp the Yard

Whether you've seen or heard of stomping before or not, I think that this is a pretty awesome movie. For me, in some ways I was able to learn about a different culture.

Rent

For those who are fans of musicals or have been in theater, I think this is a must see. It's also a movie to be watched with an open mind.

Napoleon Dynamite

This is a favorite in my family. It's a little different, but there are some one liners that make it funny.

27 Dresses

I thought this movie was funny. And for those who have been in weddings before, can almost understand what the main character is going through.

P.S. I Love You

Have a box of Kleenex handy when you watch this. Very moving. For those who have lost someone they truly love will understand.
