Marley & Me: It's All in the Family

Marley & Me is all about the family. From mango filled dog poo to hilarious commentary by the main characters; this move brings out the laughter. Moreover, at the center of the film is a heartfelt story that draws the movie-goer in and keeps you there for the entire 120 minutes of the film. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are a great couple on the big screen. The audience can feel the chemistry. Aniston ventures away from some of her previous “stereotypical” story lines in becoming a mom and presents one of her best performances. In this film a new couple finds their way through life.

The film follows John (Wilson) and Jennifer (Aniston) Grogan from their wedding through middle age. The story revolves around their journey through life alongside their neurotic dog, Marley. The film is more than just a funny commentary on new family. The movie, directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Entourage) is able to bring the heart of the Grogan family into the film. This is not just a story of their family. Frankel, through the outstanding performance by Wilson and Aniston, tells the story of every family. The struggles of newlyweds, whether finding a place to live or finally deciding to have a baby. Then the film ventures into the joys and pains of new parents. Jen must decide to have a career or stay home with her kids. John struggles to accept his lifestyle and wonders if there are things he is missing out on in life. Meanwhile their story is told next to their naughty yet loyal and lovable Labrador.

The movie is not all great. The ending seems a little drawn out and too focused. At the same time the film leaves the audience wanting just a little more. These minute discrepancies are easily overlooked however. Marley & Me is a good choice this New Year and this emotional comedy will leave you feeling fulfilled and entertained. Dog lovers will surely enjoy the stupendous mastery of chaos that Marley presents throughout the film. I give this a 9 out of 10.

Robert's Sex Doesn't Sell for Me: Men and "twilight"

Mr. Romance-less Vampire

I believe that these films and books they're coming out are just a phase. The books are not bad but you don't add a love story to vampires and the movie was not good at all. The film was laid out poorly and missed many vital parts of the book.

Mr. Better Taste

I think the movie was terrible. The dialogue in both the book and the movie were *expletive* and I think people have lost their taste for a good read and good movies. In the film, I feel that pauses were where they should not be, the silences were too awkward (even though they were supposed to be somewhat awkward in the book). Also, the actress (K. Stewart) looked like she was always having an orgasm with her facial expressions. What it needed was better, more sophisticated dialogue and more in-depth background on the whole mythology behind this story. It was just too focused on the love.

Mr. Old Fashioned Vampire

This poorly written book only sold because of a newly emerged 'heart throb'. Most people forget (Robert) has acted in other movies I found pretty bad before such as harry potter. Did anyone really find him that great as Cedric Diggory? I may not have read the actual Twilight book but I feel I can tell a good author of vampire novels from a bad one as I've read a lot in the genre involving vampires. This one was just too overhyped by young girls for my taste.

Mr. Neutral

Twilight would definetly be one of my top ten movies of 2008. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt that Twilight could be an all-ages film as adults are able to enjoy it as well. The acting was not half bad and I enjoyed the concept of a vampire love story. However, if I were involved, I would have improved the quality of some scenes. Sometimes it felt like they were rushed but that was not so bad considering it is a movie. The actors were young too but I still liked it since i have been out of high school for three years now. I look forward to New Moon.

To Be Continued...

Twilight: Romantic Love Story, or Only Half the Story?

I, like many others, read and loved the Twilight Saga. I was instantly taken in and very quickly became an advocate for Team Edward. The story engaged me to the point where all I did was read. It took me a day to read the first two books, Twilight and New Moon, and then to my immense displeasure, I had to take a break to actually go and buy the next two. A few days later, I was able to do so, and I started in on Eclipse right away. I read it in two days, and Breaking Dawn in three. I was devastated when it was over. I had thrown myself so completely into the series that I felt like a part of me was missing. I would talk for hours about the series to anyone who would listen, and especially loved talking about it to my friends who had also read and loved it. I even went as far as raving about it to the customers I checked out at Target, where I work as a cashier, as often as I could. Then the movie’s trailers started to show on TV.

Obviously, I was interested, as any Twilight fan would be that the movie was finally drawing near. In fact, it seems that to most people, the movie was the reason they decided to read the series. (This was not my reason, however – I had begun reading Twilight a few years back, but didn’t ever have time to really get into it, and then my friend persuaded me to finally go back to it.) Kristen Stewart was a nice choice for Bella, I thought, but I wasn’t so sure about Robert Pattinson. Although many others thought he was perfect - as we all saw on the news – I didn’t think he matched the Edward in my head – or even came close to matching him. Nonetheless, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, and I went to see the movie.

I was highly disappointed with what I saw.

Not only does Robert Pattinson not compare to the Edward Cullen in my own image of him, but the whole movie seemed so…botched. It had its own added scenes, and hardly any of the real ones that I loved so much in the book. And of course it was all so highly exaggerated and just plain wrong. I felt like it happened too fast. One moment, Bella doesn’t even know who this Edward Cullen is. Then all of a sudden, his vampire-ness is out, and they are in love. It skipped tons of scenes that should have happened in between that time, scenes that are very important in understanding and identifying with the concept of Edward and Bella’s love for each other. If you are a fan of the Twilight series, maybe you understand what I mean. But for those who haven’t, I don’t want to give anything away. But I would like to end this with this message: If you see the movie, and you like it…please, do read the books. I guarantee you will love it so much more. And if you haven’t seen the movie but have read the books…try to keep an open mind, because you will probably need it.

Twilight: Early Winter Idyll

Going into this movie with something akin to dread, the kind of blind hope that mass market thrillers such as these will invariably go the way of the pet rock, and the irksome optimism that maybe the movie will not be as bad as I can imagine I settled into the dark theater, disbelief suspended behind me, in a panic stricken mood. I want the movie to be good, not great, I'm not expecting the Godfather here, but just good, a little better than endurable.

The trip to the theater was a promise to my kid sister. She wanted to see it and the parents were working. So I said sure thing. I chose to forgo the experience of reading the book by Stephenie Meyer out of a snobbish literary zeal that abhors all things easy and pat e.g. Twilight, The DaVinci Code, or Odd Thomas.

Twilight opens with a pandering narration by the character Bella played by Kristen Stewart who you may remember from the film Into The Wild. I became a little nauseous when it appeared they were going to run with the narration through the duration of the film. Eventually it trailed off and the characters began to speak to each other.

I've barely been able to escape the hype and buzz swirling before the release of this hurricane of promotional baggage. Comparisons to Harry Potter, assertions that Ms. Meyer has taken the reigns of horror from the male writers made by folks who apparently forgot Frankenstein's mother/author or the massive commercial success of Ann Rice not so many years ago with her own vampire stories. And the one big media buzz that the character Edward had to be so amazingly handsome and beautiful as to leave all other male leads in the dust was as easy to figure out as the ending. They found a young actor so damn near in looks to James Dean that you'd think his undead corpse had wandered onto the set. There were so many parallels astride Robert Pattinson's portrayal of Edward and Dean in Rebel Without A Cause that I couldn't remember what movie I was watching half the time. I'm not saying it's a terrible thing. I'm just saying it's nothing to get your media all worked up about.

As far as the movie goes, it is what it is; a teen suspense and romance flick. Not quite a film and not entirely without virtue. There were great little scenes packed into a larger generic cinematic experience. There was a decent chase scene that kept my attention and woke me up when I began to nod off from all of the romantic build up. The shooting locations were lush and vibrant and filtered so as to evoke a Tim Burton feel in relation to color and tone. Even the Cullen family felt as though they might have been neighbors of Edward Scissorhands.

All in all sitting in the theater for Twilight was not a bad experience. It certainly does not make me want to go out and read the book at all though and I've read my fair share of books. I'm certain I could write Twilight the book after having seen the movie.

Quantum of Solace and James Bond: The Autumn-spring Romance Action Hero

Quantum of Solace is a splendid action movie, with deeper themes that are conveyed superlatively by the top-notch acting of Daniel Craig as the newest James Bond. Any Bond film can be pure entertainment, and movie-watchers should enjoy Quantum of Solace just for that. However, as any thinking man knows - and this is indeed for men - there are deeper earthy themes at play in any Bond movie, and Quantum of Solace has brought them into sharp focus with Mr. Craig.

First of all there is the quest in Quantum of Solace: the quest for the truth about the stunning Vesper Lynd who was killed (or allowed herself to be killed, perhaps to hide her past) in Casino Royale, in which Mr. Craig made his debut performance as Mr. Bond. Mr. Craig knows few limits in this quest, although he does observe some; he is not an out-of-control killing machine getting to the truth at any cost, despite the antagonists who are able to make his activities look that way back at MI6 headquarters. Mr. Bond is still British Secret Service, and cannot be off on a personal quest on company time...and expense, but he is!

Moreover, Mr. Bond is pursuing his quest in a manner that can only make ordinary men jealous - single-mindedly, without constraints imposed by “headquarters”, without paperwork and incident reports, but as an “army of one.” The singular hero is searching for the truth, and for those to punish for stealing Mr. Bond's Vesper Lynd. How many men have not felt the urge to throw off the constraining fetters of custom, rules, regulations, orders, box-checking, mind-numbing “compliance”, and engage in physical tests of wills with evil men? Well, the closest one may come besides joining the Army Rangers is Quantum of Solace. Quantum of Solace is in this way about a rugged individual making the rules as he goes along. That spirit of freedom pervades the movie, and Mr. Craig plays perfectly the wounded hero, the modern day frontiersman in nicely tailored clothes, looking to get even.

The quest has its romance, and this is an autumn-spring, or maybe more precisely, late-summer-spring romance. Mr. Craig, the older but powerful man, captivates the young beautiful women with his driven single-mindedness; they want to help him or at least they won't stand in his way for long. Mr. Bond captivates the women with his command presence, his powerful control in any situation, and his man-in-his-prime dominance. He conveys an overpowering animalism that attracts the early twenties beauties and promotes the ideal that a driven man with physical presence and zeal notwithstanding a decade or more difference in age can still be a romantic figure among young, beautiful, women. Bond awes them with not just his adroitness, but his drive, his passion. He is not a spent, pale office worker, but the rugged man who has not given up the fight of his life, and the young women want to be part of this man's quest. Action hero fantasies for men? Absolutely, but carried off with Mr. Craig wearing his role like a second skin. Good acting, great masculine themes - a top-notch James Bond movie.

Love Actually: A Movie Review

Movie reviews are not usually my thing. Particularly when the movie is five years old. However, by coincidence (I don't believe in coincidences) I have been getting “pinged” by the British Empire in the last twenty-four hours.

I just happen to watch Love Actually last night for the tenth time

I had a chat with a new Trion Friend from Briton Glynis Smy (You will like her work)

and an old friend from London “rang me up” to wish me happy holiday

So Love Actually, released in 2003, is getting a plug!

If you have already seen this movie, put it on your Christmas Movie List along with A Christmas Carol (1951 version) and It's a Wonderful Life as an addition to your regular holiday viewing. If you are not familiar with it then you are in for a treat.

The cast is predominately British and the comedy is British Wit and bold circumstance, and has a much sharper edged and sophisticated than American comedy (Woody Alan aside). There are probably ten love stories all going on at the same time and intertwined with the approaching Christmas Holiday. The cast is !%*#ing Brilliant and includes Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley and Bill Nighy among others.

I think that one of the elements that makes this movie unique is that it is the men initiating most of the love interest and suffering through the pursuit of romance. Try it I think you will like it!

My personal favorite it Bill Nighy as Billy Mack - an old Rock Star on a comeback. He has totally captured the part and owns it from start to finish.

Rekindle Your Love with Fireproof

Fireproof is an intense romantic comedy. It will make you laugh. It will cause you to cry. It will change your relationship forever.

Kirk Cameron stars as a fireman who leads his men with courage and valor while being a total wimp at home. Erin Bethea is a successful career woman who loses her desire for her man and whose heart is recaptured by a wounded co-worker.

Most romantic comedies hit the mark when lovers pass each other in the night, striking out at love, and laughing at themselves. Not Fireproof.

Fireproof is confrontational. Husband in wife's face. Think worst ever arguments. Think verbal abuse. See a wounded woman walk away. Watch a public hero be embarrassed in his own neighborhood.

The genius is that this will be one of the funniest movies you'll see all year. The humor comes in the form of relatable real life situations.

I had no idea what to expect going into this movie. I came away stunned:

Stunned at how easily a husband and wife can drift apart.

Stunned at the potency of committed affection.

Stunned at the deceit found in our hearts - in my own heart.

Stunned that if we want it, we will have a wonderful marriage. Yes, I was stunned and I've been married for 18 years.

I walked away both with a desire to love my wife more deeply and fearful of the consequences of failure.

But mostly I came away encouraged that love can be rediscovered.

Need to refresh your relationship? Go and watch Fireproof! It will burn away the dross that hinders your love and rekindle your heart for your mate.

Click here for the headliner song and video entitled While I'm Waiting

Fireproof will also entertain you with great dialogues, funny exchanges, and first class humor. Click here for one of the best scenes (after arriving, click on the He Said/She Said scene).

That scene is indicative of the decent acting and likable script that makes Fireproof a movie worth going out for. I also thought the fireman scenes were realistic and impressive, with one particularly hair-raising scenario.

Another good tune from the movie is entitled You Belong to Me

Fireproof is one of those unique movies that makes you laugh and cry at the same time because the scenes are well done and hit close to home. I recommend Fireproof for every married couple. It will renew your passion for your relationship. It will help you to rediscover the love you first had.

If you are single and looking for that life partner, Fireproof will give you hope.

But beware. This movie is not the lovey-dovey warm feelings type of movie. It is intense. It will rock your world and you'll be wondering why you stepped into the theater. Hang in there, the payoff is well worth waiting for.

Two Top-notch Japanese Animation Movies From Makoto Shinkai

I have been following Japanese animation or anime ever since I was 7 years old. Throughout the years, there have been many anime series which I really like but most of them are series and not movies (or OVAs). However after watching a short movie by Makoto Shinkai in the year 2003, I immediately fall in love with his works and here are 2 of my all time favorites.

Voices of a distant star

This short 30 minutes movie (also known as Hoshi no Koe in Japanese) is the first movie-type animation which I have watched. I watched it in the year 2003, a year after it was released in Japan. I'm not a big fan of romance-type story but after hearing good reviews from other anime fans, I decided to give it a try.

And I was stunned. This movie is not your normal superhero flick. It is a very touching and heart warming story about 2 high school students who fell in love with each other. This movie is produced by one of Japan's most promising directors Makoto Shinkai. This is only his second attempt in movie making and he already managed to win numerous awards such as the 2002 Animation Kobe (Best Packaging), 2002 Japan Otaku Award (Gunbuster Award), 2002 AMD Award (Best Director) and 2003 Seiun Award (Best Media of the Year).

Besides that, Makoto Shinkai is also the only person behind the entire making of the movie. The other person who helped him with this is his wife, who is the voice behind the main female character Mikako.

The story is about Noboru and Mikako falling in love with each other only to be separated by fate when Mikako is forced to join the UN Military as a soldier to fight against the raging alien race. The squadron she is in has been sent to the outer reaches of the galaxy and each passing day brings her further away from Earth, where Noboru is. The only way they keep in touch is via text messages or SMSes. However, as time goes by, the distance between both of them becomes further and the duration for the SMSes to arrive becomes longer - days, weeks, months and years.

This story is actually based on Makoto's own experience with his wife. Both of them were having a long distance relationship before they finally got married.

The animation in the movie is beautifully done and the story is very touching. I nearly cried when I first watched this movie.

Byousoku 5cm

This animation is the latest work of Makoto Shinkai. The 1 hour long movie, also known as "5 Centimeters Per Second" was released in 2007 and consists of 3 interrelated segments. Rather than focusing on his favorites ( science fiction and fantasy), he decided to make this movie based on the current world and the problems faced by most of us be it time, love or relationship with other people.

The title "5 centimers per second" actually signifies the speed at which a cherry blossom petal falls to the ground, slowly drifting apart from the tree - a sign of how someone passes through time with people entering and leaving their life. The entire story revolves around 2 childhood friends who love each other and how fate separates them apart from each other as they grow older.

The story, written by Makoto Shinkai himself, is top-notch. It is a heart-rending movie, like most of his previous works though I must admit it is a little bit depressing towards the end. The animation is also top quality with scenes from few selected places in the real-world Japan. The animation is so beautifully done that every scene can be made into a wallpaper. The music scores used suit the mood of the movie very well.

Overall, this is a must watch for all animation lovers. It's just too beautiful for anyone to miss out.

As someone who has just established his own animation studio not long ago, Makoto Shinkai's achievements have become an inspiration to many future animation directors. His works are not just beautiful but they are unique as well. One wonders what would be his next move after he came out with such a good quality animation in "Byousoku 5cm". However, one thing that all of us animation fans can be sure of is that Makoto Shinkai has never failed to impress us with his works.

I just cannot wait for his next movie. Hope you all will enjoy this short review.

A Rather Late Review of "The Wedding Date"

‘The Wedding Date’ may not be the worst movie ever made, but it could definitely be called the most unrealistic. The movie is a total straight woman's fantasy. I'd rank "Star Wars", "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Mars Attacks" as slightly more likely to happen in real life.

Meet Kat, an annoying, neurotic career woman who hires a gorgeous, nationally renowned male escort to be her date to her sister's wedding. He does the job well, he charms her whole family and manages to solve lots of their little problems along the way. For no apparent reason, the two are suddenly in love with each other.

So, a straight woman's fantasy, despite being irritating and socially awkward, Kat manages to have a beautiful man fall in love with her. The problem is that for no apparent reason, Dermot Mulroney's character does a complete turnaround after sleeping with Messing, giving up his career and lifestyle for a client that he just met. It is totally unbelievable, these two actors have as much on screen chemistry as oil and vinegar.

This is a bad movie. It is what it is, a total chick flick that will have women swooning and men chuckling to themselves in disbelief. An extraordinarily short running time (about 80 minutes) helps move things along quickly to the expected conclusion.

One wonders why anyone would try to rehash successful movie plots that have already been seen. ‘The Wedding Date’ is one of the best examples of why not to even try to remake, under the guise of a new story, something that should have been left alone. If a project like this goes ahead with the studio big honchos' approval, then go all out with big stars and glossy production values, that way, people will come for the stars.

Alas, that's not what happens in this misguided attempt at comedy. The problem seems to be the way the screen writers have transplanted the story to London, when basically, this seems to be a typical American situation that not even the setting will be able to fix.

Finally a female lead lacking in charm or wit who totally failed to light even the slightest spark in me. I truly did not care if she ‘got her man’ or remained single and unhappy. The ending, however, was never in doubt.

Top 20 Romantic Comedies

Romantic comedies have been around for longer than some people may think and with time I think it’s safe to say they have only got better. Certain ‘rom-coms’ as they are often called are iconic of their genre or even a symbol of their era. In recent years Britain has fired out some brilliant movies thanks to the production company Working Title and a lot of those have been of the romantic comedy genre and some of those may well appear on this list but this is a countdown of my favourite romantic comedies 20-1. I hope you like agree. [May contain spoilers]

20. Roxanne (1987, Fred Schepisi)

Romance: Daryl Hannah & Steve Martin

This sweet romantic comedy shows Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah in a convincing on screen relationship both as friends and more! Steve Martin throws some impressive jokes around and in parts the script (written by Mr Martin himself) is laugh out loud funny, and although it’s borderline cheesy, is very romantic in parts too.

Most romantic moment: When C.D. (Martin) is calling up to Roxanne (Hannah) pretending to be Chris. It’s beautifully written with some very romantic lines (although slightly cheesy) and is reminiscent of the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene.

19. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003, Donald Petrie)

Romance: Kate Hudson & Matthew McConaughey

A very funny movie with some rather romantic moments. Won’t make you cry or even pull your heart strings too hard but will have you laughing out loud in no time. Brilliant performances given by both Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson and promises a smile on your face by the end.

Most romantic moment: The bathroom scene.

18. Four Weddings And A Funeral (1994, Mike Newell)

Romance: Andie MacDowell & Hugh Grant

The film that made Hugh Grant the heartthrob that he is, and aren’t we glad? His character, Charles made every woman want to run into a nervous and bumbling idiot like him rather than the typical Clark Gable type, and I couldn’t help but hear the sighs of relief from men all over the world when this film came out.

Most romantic moment: The scene in the rain where Richard Curtis gained his title as God of romantic comedies!

17. Notting Hill (1999, Roger Michell)

Romance: Julia Roberts & Hugh Grant

Another appearance by Mr Grant (and not the last either) and another fine example of the work of Richard Curtis as a writer and of the production company Working Title. I have probably seen the film too many times but I just love the screen relationship between Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, and there are also some rather humorous moments with the brilliant Rhys Ifans. Again, won’t endanger your ribs but will leave you feeling great.

Most romantic moment: “I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.”

16. The American President (1995, Rob Reiner)

Romance: Annette Bening & Michael Douglas

A beautifully written movie which may well bring a tear to your eye by the end. A rather random mix of romance and politics for a movie which means your boyfriend is more likely to enjoy it with you.

Most romantic moment: The china room scene (or ‘the dish room’)

15. Hitch (2005, Andy Tennant)

Romance: Eva Mendes & Will Smith

A laugh out loud funny movie with some crafty writing, fitting in some more sentimental lines. A slick movie brilliantly directed for the perfect blend of romance and comedy and is of course beautifully pulled off by the wonderfully talented Will Smith. Eva Mendes is a perfect choice for the role bringing a delightful mix of comedy, charm and beauty to the role and it may well bring a tear to your eyes.

Most romantic moment: Will Smith talking through the peep hole on the other side of the door to Eva Mendes and not being able to express himself – also quite funny.

14. Run, Fat Boy, Run (2007, David Schwimmer)

Romance: Thandie Newton & Simon Pegg

A wonderfully directed film by David Schwimmer (Ross Gellar, no less) which will in parts make you laugh out loud, although as with some of the other films, is weak in parts. Well acted by Pegg and Newton and a brilliant casting choice for Dylan Moran who brings a huge amount of comedy to the film.

Most romantic moment: The balcony scene at the party: “I’d just settle for your respect.”

13. Big (1988, Penny Marshall)

Romance: Elizabeth Perkins & Tom Hanks

Much like Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks is also popular in this chart and although this film doesn’t focus solely on the romance element, it does have its moments. Written by Gary Ross and Steven Spielberg’s sister Anne Spielberg, this is a delightful comedy, brilliantly acted by Hanks and surprisingly the child actors are a pleasure to watch too which makes a nice change from some of the annoying child actors in Hollywood! So look out for more Tom Hanks in this chart…

Most romantic moment: When Perkins and Hanks dance together realising they’re falling for each other and Susan (Perkins) starts to kiss Josh (Hanks).

12. America’s Sweethearts (2002, Joe Roth)

Romance: Julia Roberts & John Cusack

I am a huge fan of Billy Crystal AND John Cusack so this film had to appear here somewhere! And although the film is incredibly underrated I found a place for it in this chart. The storyline isn’t so complex but then neither is that of most romantic comedies, and if I had one criticism it would be how unlikable some of the characters are, but it is also very funny in parts. John Cusack is, of course, delightful to watch on screen and very convincing as a romantic lead and there is also the pleasure of Mr Crystal for comic value.

Most romantic moment: The whole “woman by the pool” conversation between Kiki (Roberts) and Eddie (Cusack): “The woman by the pool that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with… that was me.”

11. 50 First Dates (2004, Peter Segal)

Romance: Drew Barrymore & Adam Sandler

Firstly I’d like to apologise for not having more Drew Barrymore here, I do love her as much as the next person, but I did enough narrowing down to just fit in 20 movies! And secondly I’d like to stress how much I love this movie! It manages to make me cry with both laughter and sorrow in one screening, which is incredibly hard to do. The film did well upon its release and was pleasantly popular among critics although never raved about. The film shows an appropriate balance of both comedy and drama, revealing the upsetting subject matter of short term memory loss and the affect it has on people around its victims.

Most romantic moment: Just when they’re drifting off to sleep together and Henry (Sandler) asks her not to forget about him.

10. Groundhog Day (1993, Harold Ramis)

Romance: Andie MacDowell & Bill Murray

This charming comedy follows the life of one man (Murray) who is experiencing the same day over and over, Groundhog Day. And after spending the same day with the same woman repeatedly, he begins to take a shine to her, trying and trying to win her over, each day getting closer to her and taking note of his mistakes he makes and pick ups that don’t work on her. His never ending attempts to get her into bed backfire though as he slowly starts to fall for her and his soul purpose becomes getting her to fall for him so he can continue with his life as normal.

Most romantic moment: When Bill Murray starts to tell Andie MacDowell how he really feels without realising she’s already asleep.

9. Jerry Maguire (1996, Cameron Crowe)

Romance: Renee Zellweger & Tom Cruise

This movie is a surprisingly good mix of the sports movie genre and romance with an element of drama too. Cruise plays a sports agent amazingly well and sways the audience well considering his character isn’t very nice for the most part. Renee Zellweger is adorable and perfect in the role (as usual) and the kid (played by Jonathan Lipnicki) could not be cuter!

Most romantic moment: “You had me at ‘hello’”

8. Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001, Sharon Maguire)

Romance: Renee Zellweger & Colin Firth

Yet another appearance by Renee Zellweger and also by Hugh Grant! And they deserve it! This film is based on the book by Helen Fielding and surprisingly does it justice. That isn’t to say that the screenwriters and director aren’t respected and able, but film adaptations are often not as good as the novel itself. This, however, I am happy to say, is. I read the book a couple of years ago and when I heard they were making a movie version my ears perked up and I was not disappointed. Zellweger is amazing as Bridget and carries off the English accent beautifully. She is truly an icon to all women and is played beautifully by the great Renee!

Most romantic moment: “I like you… just the way you are”

7. Pretty Woman (1999, Gary Marshall)

Romance: Julia Roberts & Richard Gere

Once again the truly gorgeous Julia Roberts makes an appearance, and what an appearance! She is stunning in this role which slightly shadows the damsel in distress story – every girls fantasy to find a guy who will take her away to infinite love and riches!

Most romantic moment: When Gere finally conquers his fear of heights to meet her at the top of the fire escape!

6. Sleepless In Seattle (1993, Norah Ephron)

Romance: Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks

This is probably the most famous romantic comedy of all time although in this chart it’s only made it to 6th place! I do, however, love Meg Ryan, love Tom Hanks and love love love Norah Ephron (writer and director). Again, acted beautifully and Hanks’ comic timing is brilliant with the tight script. Some men might need patience to watch it with you, but for us girls it’s something that will never get old!

Most romantic moment: When they FINALLY meet at the end.

5. Love Actually (2003, Richard Curtis)

Romances: Too many!

This is a beautiful story of how love is all around with a superb cast of British stars and too many romantic moments to count! A brilliant Christmas movie although can be enjoyed any day of the year.

Most romantic moment: Andrew Lincoln telling Keira Knightley how he really feels via cards.

4. Manhattan (1979, Woody Allen)

Romance: Diane Keaton & Woody Allen

Despite the marvellous performance by Mariel Hemingway, Diane Keaton steals this as the prominent romantic interest. With beautiful shots of the city that never sleeps and a gorgeous jazzy soundtrack, this is by far Allen’s best.

Most romantic moment: “You’re God’s answer to Job”

3. You’ve Got Mail (1998, Norah Ephron)

Romance: Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks

An incredibly sweet movie based on “Shop Around The Corner” starring James Stewart. Meg Ryan is adorable as usual and Tom Hanks’ charm and wit is set to 11. Yet another outstanding piece of work from Norah Ephron and I guess by now you’ve gathered I’m a fan of hers and of Meg Ryan’s, so no prizes for guess my number one romantic comedy of all time…

Most romantic moment: The closing scene: “Don’t cry Shopgirl”

2. Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961, Blake Edwards)

Romance: Audrey Hepburn & George Peppard

An ultimate classic from the moment it hit the screen! Inspired a hell of a lot of shopping in Tiffany’s and a lot of cats were adopted! What more can I say about it but “watch it!”? Whether you’ve seen it or not, watch it right now!

Most romantic moment: The final scene – in the rain!

1. When Harry Met Sally (1989, Rob Reiner)

Romance: Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal

THE best romantic comedy of all time! Written by Norah Ephron, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Will have you in stitches in parts but will also have you reaching for the tissues. A genius mix of comedy and romance with the king of comedy, Billy Crystal and the queen of romance, Meg Ryan. The couple are delightful together on screen and incredibly convincing both as friends and lovers.

Most romantic moment: The New Years party at the end: “When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
