Dumbo

The character in the movie “Dumbo” are: Dumbo, The mouse, other elephants, ringmaster, Jumbo (Dumbo's Mum), and the crows.

The story is about a deformed elephant that has huge ears and always gets in his way. Jumbo is involved with the circus. Jumbo gets taken away due to a rampage she did trying to protect her baby, Dumbo.

Dumbo was then made a clown which was very uncomfortable for him. He got pushed and shoved while doing his act, but then a very helpful mouse, came and washed up Dumbo. He loved him and cared for him. Dumbo was feeling very depressed so the mouse had an idea. He had made a decision to take Dumbo to his mum.

While they were gone, the ringmaster's clowns dropped some of their alcohol into Dumbo's water. When they came back Dumbo had a drink of his water, not knowing that the clowns have dropped alcohol into it. The mouse saw that Dumbo wasn't feeling good so he tried his water. They both started having hallucinations.

When they woke up after having their hallucinations they were up in a tree. A couple of crows came and started teasing them. The mouse thought that Dumbo had flown up. The crows doubted it and teased again. The mouse convinced the crows to help them see if Dumbo could fly. They jumped of the cliff and wa-hay he flew. They went back to the circus and did an act, the same act in fact, but this time Dumbo flew instead of falling onto the trampoline, over the crowed and the other elephants. Dumbo became famous.

Quantum of Solace and James Bond: The Autumn-spring Romance Action Hero

Quantum of Solace is a splendid action movie, with deeper themes that are conveyed superlatively by the top-notch acting of Daniel Craig as the newest James Bond. Any Bond film can be pure entertainment, and movie-watchers should enjoy Quantum of Solace just for that. However, as any thinking man knows - and this is indeed for men - there are deeper earthy themes at play in any Bond movie, and Quantum of Solace has brought them into sharp focus with Mr. Craig.

First of all there is the quest in Quantum of Solace: the quest for the truth about the stunning Vesper Lynd who was killed (or allowed herself to be killed, perhaps to hide her past) in Casino Royale, in which Mr. Craig made his debut performance as Mr. Bond. Mr. Craig knows few limits in this quest, although he does observe some; he is not an out-of-control killing machine getting to the truth at any cost, despite the antagonists who are able to make his activities look that way back at MI6 headquarters. Mr. Bond is still British Secret Service, and cannot be off on a personal quest on company time...and expense, but he is!

Moreover, Mr. Bond is pursuing his quest in a manner that can only make ordinary men jealous - single-mindedly, without constraints imposed by “headquarters”, without paperwork and incident reports, but as an “army of one.” The singular hero is searching for the truth, and for those to punish for stealing Mr. Bond's Vesper Lynd. How many men have not felt the urge to throw off the constraining fetters of custom, rules, regulations, orders, box-checking, mind-numbing “compliance”, and engage in physical tests of wills with evil men? Well, the closest one may come besides joining the Army Rangers is Quantum of Solace. Quantum of Solace is in this way about a rugged individual making the rules as he goes along. That spirit of freedom pervades the movie, and Mr. Craig plays perfectly the wounded hero, the modern day frontiersman in nicely tailored clothes, looking to get even.

The quest has its romance, and this is an autumn-spring, or maybe more precisely, late-summer-spring romance. Mr. Craig, the older but powerful man, captivates the young beautiful women with his driven single-mindedness; they want to help him or at least they won't stand in his way for long. Mr. Bond captivates the women with his command presence, his powerful control in any situation, and his man-in-his-prime dominance. He conveys an overpowering animalism that attracts the early twenties beauties and promotes the ideal that a driven man with physical presence and zeal notwithstanding a decade or more difference in age can still be a romantic figure among young, beautiful, women. Bond awes them with not just his adroitness, but his drive, his passion. He is not a spent, pale office worker, but the rugged man who has not given up the fight of his life, and the young women want to be part of this man's quest. Action hero fantasies for men? Absolutely, but carried off with Mr. Craig wearing his role like a second skin. Good acting, great masculine themes - a top-notch James Bond movie.

Rekindle Your Love with Fireproof

Fireproof is an intense romantic comedy. It will make you laugh. It will cause you to cry. It will change your relationship forever.

Kirk Cameron stars as a fireman who leads his men with courage and valor while being a total wimp at home. Erin Bethea is a successful career woman who loses her desire for her man and whose heart is recaptured by a wounded co-worker.

Most romantic comedies hit the mark when lovers pass each other in the night, striking out at love, and laughing at themselves. Not Fireproof.

Fireproof is confrontational. Husband in wife's face. Think worst ever arguments. Think verbal abuse. See a wounded woman walk away. Watch a public hero be embarrassed in his own neighborhood.

The genius is that this will be one of the funniest movies you'll see all year. The humor comes in the form of relatable real life situations.

I had no idea what to expect going into this movie. I came away stunned:

Stunned at how easily a husband and wife can drift apart.

Stunned at the potency of committed affection.

Stunned at the deceit found in our hearts - in my own heart.

Stunned that if we want it, we will have a wonderful marriage. Yes, I was stunned and I've been married for 18 years.

I walked away both with a desire to love my wife more deeply and fearful of the consequences of failure.

But mostly I came away encouraged that love can be rediscovered.

Need to refresh your relationship? Go and watch Fireproof! It will burn away the dross that hinders your love and rekindle your heart for your mate.

Click here for the headliner song and video entitled While I'm Waiting

Fireproof will also entertain you with great dialogues, funny exchanges, and first class humor. Click here for one of the best scenes (after arriving, click on the He Said/She Said scene).

That scene is indicative of the decent acting and likable script that makes Fireproof a movie worth going out for. I also thought the fireman scenes were realistic and impressive, with one particularly hair-raising scenario.

Another good tune from the movie is entitled You Belong to Me

Fireproof is one of those unique movies that makes you laugh and cry at the same time because the scenes are well done and hit close to home. I recommend Fireproof for every married couple. It will renew your passion for your relationship. It will help you to rediscover the love you first had.

If you are single and looking for that life partner, Fireproof will give you hope.

But beware. This movie is not the lovey-dovey warm feelings type of movie. It is intense. It will rock your world and you'll be wondering why you stepped into the theater. Hang in there, the payoff is well worth waiting for.

Batman: A Real Superhero?

Batman. first lets get one thing straight he is not a superhero. he has no superpowers, he cant fly unaided, cant pick up an extremely heavy load, he cant dodge bullets or withstand them, in fact he cant do anythinf of extra-ordianry importance without the use of gadgets. all he is, is a rich, pretty strong vigilante. if his corny villians (except for bane, kiler croc, and maybe the joker) batmans villians are lame, any other superhero could take them out in a single move. i mean a superhero named the "riddler"? how lame is that? all he does is talk in riddles and all his crimes are related to riddles, and he has a big question mark jumsuit soooooo lame. then he breaks the traditional mold of superhero solo jobs by adopting a sidekick, wow how much of a loser do you have to be to get not 1 but 2 sidekicks to help you fight crime? think about it, if one of batmans villains gained real superpowers ans took him on? if the joker had supermans powers batman would be visiting the batgrave. then he is a detective, who is he? sherlock holmes with a blackbelt here? that is sooo lame damn, mybe he should have had like the power to turn into a bat or control bats, batman is a corny name to begin with. then comes the face that he is always relying on some sort of gadget to get out of his problems, after he got stomped on by bane what did he do? he went and crafted a BAT MACHINE! a bat machine people he couldnt take bane without somw sort of help, if that was green lantern or the hulk bane would need a cane. but not batman he is the ultimate corny superhero. how did they let him join the justice league? he doesnt have superpowers people. batman, green arrow and lone ranger are all on the same page. take away green arrows bow and wrrows and some common street thugs that spidey could shrug off could possibly kil the green arrow without his gadgets. but back to batman. the lame man. he is the only superhero with transportation in the form of a car or a motorcycle, lame. so that basically sums up the VIGILANTE that is batman, he is not a superhero. just a gadget using, over acheiving, LUCKY, rich man. batman should be recongnized as a man with a problem remember folks his sign is a bat.

Role Model: Bruce Wayne

Bruce Wayne is a role model. He realizes that with his resources he has the power to help people, and does not want others to stuffer the loss he did. The violent murder of his parents' in front of him as a child while leaving early from an evening at the opera in Gotham City one night was very traumatic event and Bruce never forgot how much it hurt. He felt a deep desire to strike back against the person who took their lives. Alfred Pennyworth, the family butler, became his guardian and helped him mourn.

His father was a medical doctor and very wealthy so he grows up to be a multi-billionaire industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Because of the money left to him, and money made by the company Wayne Enterprises, Bruce was able to train in martial arts, and learned to think like a criminal. Lucius Fox is Wayne's business manager, and runs the company for Bruce.

As Batman, using the resources he has at hand from Wayne Enterprises, he steps in to help people in situations as Bruce Wayne; he would be unable to help. He also sometimes oversteps his bounds to out think criminals. He relies on trusted people for guidance in those times.

Bruce Wayne lives the life of two personas. Batman must do the right thing to help the people, even if it means working as a vigilantly. Bruce Wayne takes the other burden of being irresponsible at times, and acting as a playboy. Bruce Wayne gave up being Bruce as a person to take on the role of Batman. In doing this, he is able to focus in on his goal, and look for the right opportunities to capture his criminals. At the same time he is only human, and even if he plans for every risk, he is not always able to stop everything.

Role Model: Marty Mcfly of the Back to the Future Trilogy

Martin Seamus "Marty" McFly of the Back to the Future Trilogy is a role model. His best friend is a scientist and elderly man, Emmet Doc Brown, who invents a time machine made from a De Lorean sports car. He dreams of a musical career playing guitar, and being with his girlfriend, Jennifer Parker.

Marty oftentimes gets into trouble. He is often late for school and serving detention. He plays guitar in the band The Pinheads. He also enjoys skateboarding, and appears to be quite good at it.

Marty is not afraid to take risks, although he, like his father George McFly, started out afraid to show off his art because of the fear of rejection. Thanks to the help of the time machine and Doc Brown, Marty learns to overcome this fear back in the year 1955. Marty does not mean to, but in helping him to get back home to the year 1985, he changes his future for himself and his parents.

Doc Brown later takes Marty into the future to the year 2015, and due to a little too much interest in changing his future with Grey's Sports Almanac, changes the past instead. Marty learns that in the future, he does not make it with his music and that his life is one big disappointment. He comes home to a life that is even worse, when he returns to 1985 and the present is not as it was when he left. He and Doc Brown go back, once again to 1955 to fix it.

Doc Brown through a complete mishap ends up in the year 1885. Marty does not want his friend to be stuck in the past so he goes back in time to bring him back.

Marty does not like to be called “chicken” and has a hard time walking away. When faced with this, because Marty does not realize that he is not a coward, he takes unnecessary risks and finds himself in worse trouble. The Tannens in the past, present and future have no problem with causing this kind of trouble. Thanks to the help of his friends and family he eventually learns to walk away. This is his worse fault.

Marty learns more about himself and what he is able to do. He also learns that despite all he learns about the future, it is not written in stone as long as he is willing to take the risk. If anything, Doc Brown and his father are role models, because they accomplished what they set out to do. Learning the future is what you make of it.

Role Model: Mary Embrey of Hancock

Mary Embrey of Hancock is a role model. She met her husband Ray, a single father, after the birth of his child Ethan, and loss of his wife. They fell in love, and Mary raised Ethan as if he were her own. She loves Ray for the man he is, a regular hero, and supports him in his public relations work.

When Ray brought Hancock home, she loved the way Ray wanted to help Hancock. She accepted him into their home for the sake of her husband. She gladly made Hancock meatballs, not only serving them when they invited Hancock over for dinner, but also bringing some over when he was in the penitentiary. She wanted to instill the same thoughts about Hancock with Ethan, as Ray did. Mary also wanted to give Hancock hope. The thing that Hancock did not understand was why he was the only of his kind on the planet, and he wanted to know where he came from.

Mary never thought that Ray and Hancock would become such friends and spend so much time together. When she saw what was happening she knew there was only one thing to do – answer the questions Hancock had about who he was. Mary knew she had to do that for the good of Hancock. She knew that when she told Hancock the truth there would be consequences but it was worth the risk. Mary knew that sometimes you have to take these kinds of risks in order to do the right thing. She did what she had to do because she loved her husband Ray, and she loved Hancock. In order for Ray’s plan to work, Hancock needed information. Mary wanted to make as much difference in someone’s life as Ray did. Mary knew that Ray would understand. She had that much confidence. She did the right thing in the end.

Role Model : Hancock

Hancock is a role model. He is a man with super powers that somewhere in his life lost his way. He always worked to help people and save lives but was very sloppy. That and he found it hard to live his life being the only one of his people. He felt the only way to compensate for that loss was to drink alcohol.

His life began to change when he met Ray Embrey, who worked in public relations. Hancock felt a connection with him; Embrey understood what Hancock was trying to do. Embrey brought Hancock into his home and introduced him to his wife Mary, and his son Ethan.

For Hancock saving his life, Embrey gave up his time and money to help get him on the right track. He came up with a plan, and although Hancock did not really like the plan, because he could see that Embrey and his family believed in him, Hancock was willing to participate.

In serving time, Hancock saw what the world was like for people. He became more in touch with why they did the things they did, and learned what it meant to be a hero. He also saw that what Embrey asked of him what not that much, it was the fact that Embrey believed in him that he valued.

Hancock learned more about who he was and where he came from. It was a great surprise for him where he learned the information from, but despite that he did not do anything that would hurt the new friendships he created. He adjusted his life and continued life on accordingly. Others may have taken the same information and figuratively “stabbed each other in the back.” Hancock learned many things; most of all that he was not the only hero on earth.

Role Model: Ray Embrey of the Movie, Hancock

Ray Embrey of the movie, Hancock, is a role model. This is a man that follows his heart and wants to do the right thing. Ray is working his dream job in public relations. It is obvious he chose that particular field because he wanted to change the world, especially when you see him visiting businesses, asking them to put the heart logo on their products, and asking them to give their product to people who need it, and cannot afford to buy it. Ray stands by his principles and values. He cares about people.

Here is a man who works hard and uses the knowledge and resources he has to take care of his family. He believes in people first, and what they have the capability of doing.

He sees the good in people, which is probably why he decided to do public relations for Hancock. He is thankful that Hancock saved his life. Ray sees Hancock as a lost soul who needs a little help getting back on his feet. He creates a plan and some gives him some simple things that improve the way he looks to the people that are not hard for Hancock to follow.

He teaches the same thing to his son Aaron, who sees the same good in Hancock that his father sees. Ray is not afraid to give up his life to do the right thing, which is why his wife Mary loves his so much, as finds such value in her husband.

Ray is thrown a few surprises, but although things he learns a little take him aback, he stands by the people he cares for. Ray does not hold grudges. Despite what he learns, he must already know that the people he cares for do not let him down, because they never seem to let him down.

The Uniqueness of Female Action Heroes

Female action heroes also make use of a weapon that their male counterparts do not seem to use as often. Besides having become physically strong, they still make use of a weapon that was before used as the only one that regular female heroes possessed in movies: they use their mind and their heart to win battles or to achieve their goals. In Calvert's et al. article we read that female action heroes “use [their] mind to achieve victory and show compassion to others including their enemies [... since a] female hero only fights as a last resort, when all other methods have failed.” This is an extremely powerful weapon that women use, as we could see Lara Croft (“Tomb Raider”) using when instead of trying to violently take the clock that her father had left her from Manfred Powell, the villain, she went and talked to him to see what kind of deal they could work out. But of course, she knew that this was the easiest way to gain access to that clock and keep it herself. Moreover, when he said that he would need the half of the triangle that Lara had taken before he could, she said she would bring it but she made a replica of the original because she knew he would betray her.

But he believed her and that is where the beauty of that weapon lies: she used her mind to see in which way he would do what she wanted him to do and she found the way without resorting to violence. Moreover, in “Charlie's Angels” the girls figured out a way to gain access to the fingerprints and retina scan from the two only men who had access to the restricted area where they needed to go, in that way being able to go into that restricted area themselves. The Angels usually use their sex appeal to obtain what they need, but that is because they know that that is a very effective way to do so. Therefore, what they do in the movie is first use their mind or intelligence to formulate a plan and then they use their sex appeal as a resource. So, basically, even though these female heroes have the ability of using force or physical strength to confront their enemies, they do not necessarily use that as the one and only resource or even as a first choice, but they only use it as a last resource or when absolutely necessary. As a matter of fact, according to an investigation that the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation has carried out, only 19% of female characters in films used physical force while the male did in 53% of the times.

There is yet another element that makes female action heroes unique in comparison to their male counterparts. These women are not afraid to show their feelings, although they do not do it in the traditionally female way. We do not usually see a male action hero crying or showing his vulnerable sides. They may, however, show tears of anger, but not tears of sadness. Bou and Pérez explain in their book El tiempo del Héroe [The Time of the Hero] that if the male hero does indeed cry it will only be an isolated event that will launch the action or the beginning of a quest. These tears are the new launchers like in the past it used to be love at first sight, that is to say, that before in movies the launching factor was love at first sight what would trigger the hero to go on a quest for his loved one (Bou and Pérez, 2000: 32). In movies nowadays these tears in some of the male heroes work the same way in which love at first sight used to work in the past, they have the same power. Furthermore, male action heroes do not show open feelings about the women they love or have a sentimental interest in. Perhaps the reason why they do not cry or show their feelings towards others is because they do not want to show vulnerability, they are big machos who do not cry or crack under pressure. Of course we do not see any of the Angels or Lara cry under pressure either, but we do see Lara crying when visiting her father's grave or Sidney Bristow, from the tv series “Alias,” both screaming in pain and crying. But the fact that women do this more than men it does not make them weaker, but instead it makes them fuller, richer character and more compassionate, since they do not fear showing their emotions.

Bou and Pérez give us yet another meaningful explanation or theory about the uncrying male hero: the full release of emotions through tears is not an option for the male action hero, since it is an experience that the male dominant movie business does not allow beyond the insight of every man, something that should not escape to the exterior. Therefore, since pain is not allowed to exit the man's body through tears, it should do so some other way, and the procedure that was chosen to portray this was one which would make the whole body cry: through blood and wounds (Bou and Pérez, 2000: 64). Hence, we find here a connection to the fact that the male action hero's body seems to get more hurt in action movies than the female's one.

Furthermore, right now male action heroes are beginning to display a new characteristic which has been for ever attributed to women: they are starting to actually talk. Bou and Pérez tell us about a man who in an interview expressed that in Quentin Tarantino's movie Pulp Fiction the male heroes talked much more than they were expected to, given their violent nature. Therefore, one explanation could be that the extreme violent world that we find in male action heroes' movies needed a break, and doing more talking than customary seems to be one of the answers (Bou and Pérez, 2000: 215). This way, we could say that male heroes are beginning to turn towards characteristics often displayed by female action heroes which have proven to be successful. What is more, another reason why male action heroes had to change was because of the previously mentioned fact that they were becoming obsolete. As a matter of fact, the conclusion that Calvert et al. reached in their study was that

the most effective formula for presenting heroic female portrayals is one in which female characters embody traditionally valued feminine characteristics, such as physical attractiveness, nurturance, compassion, and using the mind over the sword. Using your mind and being compassionate are integral cultural expectations for female heroes, and perhaps should be emphasized more in our male heroes as well.

What the authors of the research are suggesting is that since female action heroes have become so successful, perhaps male action heroes should imitate some of the characteristics that the former present.
