While She Was Out

It seems that when an idea for a movie is unique, than rather like busses two come along at the same time. Earlier on in 2008 Eden Lake saw a woman battling for her life against a group of thugs, the result was devastating. Now Oscar winning actress Kim Basinger, on a Christmas shopping trip finds that she too is a victim of thugs, where Eden Lakes thugs were kids, these Thugs are twenty something's with sex and death on their mind.

Sadly While She Was Out does not add up to the intensity of Eden Lake; the big problem was that the British movie had such large shoes anything following in its path needs to be considerably better to succeed. While She Was Out can only offer two things, harsh language and a rather amusing series of deaths to support itself, the rest of the time it comes off feeling like an afternoon TV movie, with a couple of reasonable leading actors.

At 55 Basinger looks absolutely stunning, and not a day over 40, but looks cannot make the actress pull through the movie, her performance is soulless. As a verbally abused wife at the hands of her husband played by eighties heart throb Craig Sheffer (now looking like Michelin Man), you feel for her plight. But the moment she pins a note to an inconsiderate motorist's car, you lose all compassion for the woman, even when her credit cards are declined while she feverishly adds the finishing touches to a family Christmas; you feel more compassion for the woman that has to break the news, more than you do Basinger. It's not all Basingers fault, while she could have put more into her performance, she cannot outdo the work of a terrible script writer. Whilst running in fear of her life from a gang of thugs, the screenwriter has her having long loud conversations, and even shouting with herself; pardon me but when on the run from an armed gang do you not try to be as quiet as you possibly can?

Time to move onto the toolbox, leaving her mobile phone, purse, handbag, and car keys in her badly damaged car; Basingers character then heads off into the woods with a red toolbox... Amusingly the trailers says "She has the box, and she knows what to do with it!" The gang have similar thoughts in mind, but they are not referring to the toolbox. Having accepted the fact that Basinger is a bit of a doormat, and to be fair a little bit useless, you then expected to understand that she knows a series of cunning ways to despatch her attackers, her first rummage in the toolbox produces a tyre wrench which she uses to make the most vile attacker breath a little easier. Similar toolbox dalliances follow until she is left with the most dangerous assailant. Luckily enough for Basinger, just in case she does not have enough tools in her box, one of the attackers exits in a moment that will make you confused over whether this is meant to be a thriller or a slapstick comedy.

As her adversary Basinger must contend with Witness star Lucas Haas who plays the freaky Chuckie, "Chuckie?" she laughs "at least your parents had a sense of humour!" Haas is no dangerous thug, and totally unbelievable as the movies big villain. You never really quite know what's going on in either the actor or the scriptwriters head. Chuckie is like a yo-yo up and down throughout the whole movie, no real rhyme or reason, and nothing to either make you like him or hate him.

The movies biggest offence however is in its publicity, whoever edited together the US and UK trailers for the movie really does need to understand about not spoiling the climax of a movie, as a result the big "surprise!!!" at the end is revealed in the trailer for those unfortunate enough to have seen it, this is simply unforgivable.

It's really hard to decide where to push the overall blame, rumour has it that the movies production team heard all about Eden Lake, assuming it to be delivered like a quaint British movie and liked the idea. Nobody expected Eden Lake to be such a hard act to follow, and certainly not a film that would leave the most hardened of horror enthusiasts in a cold sweat. This leaves While She Was Out with only one place in the movie community straight to TV or direct to DVD market, its lacklustre uninviting and a waste of 90 minutes of your life. If you do have any desire to see the movie, its best to schedule it before a viewing of Eden Lake, perhaps the end result will be more rewarding.

Quantum of Solace: Wham, Bam, Thank You Mam, and I Loved It

2008Director: Marc ForsterStarring: Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench, Mathieu Amalric, Olga Kurylenko, Gemma Arterton

Quantum of Solace picks up directly where Casino Royale left off, with our hero mourning the loss of his lover Vespa, and burning with rage at the nefarious organisation which forced her to betray him. This is the first time the Bond franchise has ever continued a direct plot line through more than one film, and the narrative occasionally suffers as a result as the viewer may struggle to follow the complex web of deceit which Bond attempts to unravel. Bond films have never before been too hung up on the plausibility of the plot, however, and Quantum of Solace is no exception, saving it's energy for it's visually stunning, viscerally breath-taking action sequences. It's a cliché to say so, but I was actually on the edge of my seat, wincing in sympathy as Daniel Craig pounded the bad guys to pulp, while taking quite a bashing himself. The opening sequences in Italy are particularly amazing.

The other Bond prerequisite is of course beautiful girls, and in Quantum of Solace they come in the form of the shockingly underused Gemma Aterton, and the powerful newcomer Olga Kurylenko, who shares bond's passion for revenge. My only real disappointed with Quantum of Solace came with the anti-climatic final battle. Perhaps I was burnt out from the stomach churning action sequences which preceded it, but I didn't think the burning cardboard compound made a particularly dramatic setting for the finale, and the action itself seemed lacklustre compared with the earlier dynamism and power displayed. This alone, however, would not be enough to deter me from recommending this film, and I think it is another fine addition to the 007 catalogue. It may not have the wow-factor of Casino Royale, but given that that film was so utterly different to every other Bond film, there was no way that Quantum of Solace could have surprised or impressed the critics in the same way. ***3*s

Insanitarium (2008) Review

I watched this film and it is really very good.

It is directed by Jeff Buhler, who has also recently done The Midnight Meat Train, the cast are amazing and plot sensational. I have seen some ratings for this movie are quite poor, but i don't think so at all.

The cast features: Jesse Metcalfe who plays Jack, Kiele Sanchez ( played Nikki Fernandez in Lost) who plays Lily, Peter Stormare ( Prison Break and CSI) plays Dr Gianetti and Kevin Sussman ( Ugly Betty, CSI and My Name is Earl). They are the four most frequent characters.

Metcalfe plays a character that intentionally gets himself locked up inside a psychiatric hospital, Jack, as he wants to release his sister Lily( Sanchez) from there. She has been in there after attempting suicide after their mothers' death. Jack tries to find his sister but to no avail. He eventually finds her and promises he will get them out of there. He enlists the help of a fellow "patient" Dave ( Sussman) to help him. He finds that Dr Gianetti is using the patients as "guinea pigs". He has developed a drug that he gives to people on maximum and it turns them into flesh eating psychos!

It is really creepy, i think. I think both Metcalfe and Sanchez play their roles incredibly and deserve recognition. It's quite a bit different to other films that have Zombies in it but at the same time it is a very fresh feeling movie. Something different, quite different.

Watch the movie, if you haven't already, and let me know your opinions. Thank You.

Eagle Eye Review

Eagle Eye stars Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan as Jerry Shaw and Rachel Hollowman. The movie starts off with the government trying to decided weather or not they should kill a group of people they believe maybe terrorist. When a computer comes up with a 51% chance they are the terrorists the government acts and kills them all. Meanwhile Jerry Shaw an unsuccessful young man who works at a copy shop finds out his identical twin brother has died. You soon learn that Jerry was always in the shadow of his “perfect” brother who worked for the government.

Upon returning home to his apartment he finds boxes and containers filled with weapons, explosives, and forged documents. He then receives a phone call from an unknown woman who tells him that he has 30 seconds to get out of the apartment before the FBI get there and that he has been “activated”. While this is going on Rachel Hollowman is forced to do whatever the woman on the phone wants for fear that she will harm her son. The mysterious woman has the power to control anything electronic and helps bring the two together while getting them to do her bidding to take down the American government.

I thought the movie was a little plain. Don’t get me wrong it had some great moments and a good mystery. But some of it was to drug out and when the mystery is finally solved you are kind of left with an “oh okay…” felling instead of a shocking twist like your expecting. Despite this I still think it’s a movie worth seeing. The unknown woman gives a god-like twist in the form that the two main characters have no choice and are merely puppets. Although you might not enjoy it if you have seen I-Robot because it is defiantly a copy of that in most aspects. All and all I would give it a 6.5/10 not a smash hit but still something worth seeing.

Halloween is Lurking Around the Corner

Fall. It brings upon us the Halloween season. Before September even ends, the stores are full of costumes and candy. Time to pull out your scary movies and gather your friends around for a night full of fear of the unknown. Horror movies are great fun no matter what time of year. Its that thrill we experience when we get scared, its fun, it reminds us that we are not always in control of whats happening.

Where doubt and possibility meet.

The saying goes, there is a time and place for everything under the sun. A time to laugh, a time to share, a time to work and a time to rest. But is there a time to be scared? Should we allow ourselves to be frightened? Why do some people avoid horror films? Alot of people will tell you its fun to be scared, but how much fun is it? There are varying degrees of fun, fun that makes us laugh out loud. Fun that makes us cry, and fun that exhausts us, like after riding a roller coaster.

But what about the kind of fun sitting in a theatre watching a scary movie? Is there not a time for that, a time to let our minds relax and let our worries fade away into the darkness of the theatre? After all, you plan to walk out and carry on as usual, so why not give yourself a couple of hours away from your own worries and thoughts. They don’t call it movie magic for nothing.

Thriller or Horror?

The difference between thrillers and horror movies is, say for example, your next door neighbour wants to terrorize and/or kill you. (Lakeview Terrace – starring Samuel Jackson and Disturbia – starring Shia LaBeouf) are excellent examples. Its quite possible that your next door neighbour may be a little strange and doesn’t want to make any friends.

Horror or Thriller?

Unlike in a horror movie, where you have a menacing figure that silently roams amoung us usually appearing after dark, and never dies. Even if they fall off a balcony or are shot in the head, they always “walk” away. The camera turns its focus on the “hero” that was attempting to save the day, then it pans back to the spot where the evil force has fallen. But, the figure is no longer laying there, he’s gone.

Fear

Our fear of the dark as adults never really goes away, we just pretend its gone, and stop there. So rent, buy or borrow a horror movie and let your imagination decide.

Happy Hunting.

One Missed Call: Would You Answer the Call?

Are you a fan of thriller movies? You know, the ones that leave you on the edge of your seat. If so, One Missed Call may just be the movie for you.

This movie was released in January, 2008. One Missed Call is a remake of the Japanese film, Chakushin Ari which came out in 2003.

One Missed Call was directed by Eric Valette. Eric Valette also directed a bunch of foreign films, such as Malèfique, which came out in 2002. The screenplay portion was written by Andrew Klavan. This playwrighter also wrote A Shock To The System, which came out in 1990. One Missed Call is based on a novel written by Yasushi Akimoto. Chakushin Ari 1 and 2 were novels that Yasushi wrote.

The tagline of this movie is, "What will it sound like when you die?" Sure that is an eerie tagline, but it makes for an interesting plot.

Imagine getting a phone call from someone who has already died. They leave a voicemail with the date and time of your pending death, and if you listen closely it is your voice calling. Between the time of the call and the time of death, you see distorted images and faces, as well as things that are peculiar and unusual. Those that die are left with a piece of hard candy, in the color red. The story behind the hard candy comes later on in the storyline.

The movie starts off with the mysterious death of Shelley, played by Meagan Good. Later on, at a party, Leann (Azura Skye) gets a call on her cell phone from Shelley's number, and it dated ahead of time. When Leann listens to the voicemail she hears herself screaming.

Note: all phone calls leading to the deaths take place on the death holders cell phone.

Before each of her friends died, Beth (Shannyn Sassamon) heard the noise of an inhaler. The inhaler becomes apparent later on in the movie as well.

After Leann, her ex boyfriend Brian (Johnny Lewis) gets the death call, followed by Taylor (Ana Claudia Talancòn). Taylor is freaked out by the call and goes through an 'exorcism' that would be televised. Needless to say, an exorcism could not save her.

Then Beth herself gets the call, but by this time Detective Jack Andrews (Edward Burns) is there to help her. They try to trace back to where the calls first started. Jack's sister also received the call. In fact, she is the one that called Shelley in the beginning of the movie. This news was able to help them to trace it back to the Layton family. While the youngest Layton daughter was in the St. Lukes Hospital, it burnt down, and Beth was concerned that this was where it all started. The mother had abusive issues, so the detective and Beth thought that she was the one the started the calls.

Now the question is, was the mother the one that started it all? To find out the answer, you will have to watch the movie for yourself. The movie is well worth the watch. It is one of those great thrillers, that will keep you guessing till the very end, and that is a rarity in movies these days.

The Happening

The Happening is a doomsday movie with an environmental twist. Normally doomsday movies have an enemy of aliens, nuclear holocaust, terrorists or some other disaster. This is an enemy of a different sorts, one that no one would expect: plants!

At the beginning of the movie, Mark Wahlberg is a science teacher discussing the recent phenomenon of bees missing. This foreshadows the movies plot. Plants in Northeast United States, Maine to Virginia start to release a neurotoxin that makes humans stop in their tracks and want to kill themselves! Some of these self mutilations are disturbing to say the least. Some of them I could have done without seeing (like the man laying down in front of a lawn mower). But the movie gets its point across; that we are all subject to nature and not everything in nature can be explained by science.

Mark Wahlbergs character, his new wife and their friend's daughter try to get out of the ‘infected' area throughout the movie. The infected area does not spread west of Ohio and seems to be contained. The plants eventually stop releasing the neurotoxin and life goes back to normal without the few million people that happened to kill themselves due to this outbreak. At the end of the movie the plants in France release the neurotoxin.

One of the odd things about the movie is people are trying to leave the affected area without any protection. At the start of the outbreak many people believe it is the cause of another terrorist attack. Soon some people start to figure it out that it is the plants and as the wind blows, the toxin spreads. But even if it were a terrorist attack, no one was wearing gas masks. No people were wearing even the cheapest home supply store particle mask. No one even had a bandana over their mouth. The only thing the actors did through the movie was to shut the windows. Also it was never said why the plants started to release the toxin.
