All-time Worldwide Box Office

When referring to best movies, we usually use the box-office system to rate them. It's not entirely correct to judge a movie from the cinemas' earnings, but the fact is that the more people see it, the best it is. So here is the top 5 movies according to box office!

1. Titanic (1997) $1,835,300,000

Well I think that we all remember this movie. The movie was horrible as many people said, but it came first in the box office ranking. The story was about a rich girl and poor boy who meet on the ill-fated voyage of the 'unsinkable' ship. Many people cried at the final scene, where Leonardo DiCaprio sunk while Kate Winslet was trying to save him. I didn't :P. My overall rating for this movie is 3/10.

The Lord of the Rings: The return of the King (2003) $1,129,219,252

What an epic movie. It's my favourite movie and I can't understand why this movie is in the second place! The story of the Lord of the Rings movie is known to anyone and I won't say much. Frodo blah blah, Sauron blah blah, ring blah blah the good win etc :D.

If you haven't seen the Lord of the Rings movies, run and get them!!! Overall rating 10/10

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) $1,060,332,628

That part was the best of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. It had super special effects and I really enjoyed it. Johhny Depp was perfect in his role and Keira Knightley was super sexy in this movie.

Overall rating 9/10.

That was the top 3 box office movies list! Hope you liked it! Waiting for your comments!

Top Six Countdown: Cliche Movie Phrases

6. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

5. "Well then, where were we?"

CHARACTER C interrupts CHARACTER A and CHARACTER B. After CHARACTER C is out of the picture, either CHARACTER A or CHARACTER B says this phrase. A black screen/fade out follows.

4. "Mommy!"

Most horror movies involve a kid and his/her mother, the kid constantly calling "mommy".
...Where's daddy?

3. "So, we meet again" OR "I knew you'd come crawling back"

You guessed it, the Villain's first words to the Hero the second time they meet

2. "Go on without me!" "No! I'm not leaving without you"

This phrase is crucial to all action movies. CHARACTER A and CHARACTER B are arguing in a dangerous situation. CHARACTER A says "Go on without me!" while CHARACTER B replies 'I'm not leaving without you" In most cases, the evil dude captures CHARACTER B as bait and CHARACTER A has more work to do!

1. "S/HE's standing right behind me, isn't S/HE?"

While CHARACTER A is on a lengthy rant about bad qualities of CHARACTER B to CHARACTER C, CHARACTER B is behind CHARACTER A with crossed arms or hands on the hips, being silent. CHARACTER C is trying to give CHARACTER A hints that CHARACTER B is there. CHARACTER A almost always says "S/HE's standing right behind me, isn't S/HE?"

Top 20 Movies of the 80s

20. The Little Mermaid (1989, Ron Clements & Jon Musker)

This is easily my favourite Disney movie and it’s an absolute classic example of the terrific outcome of movies during the 1980s. I, for one, remember having tons of Little Mermaid merchandise and remember watching it over and over again. It’s a favourite of the 80s and deservedly so.

19. The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick)

One of the most frightening movies ever made and based on a terrific read by Stephen King, who apparently hated this film adaptation. I, however, loved it! Jack Nicholson is no less than brilliant as Jack Torrence and Shelley Duvall is too as his wife, Wendy. This film came at a time when America was punching out some pretty impressive horror movies during the 70s and 80s and this one is definitely reminiscent of that period.

18. Raging Bull (1980, Martin Scorsese)

This is arguably the greatest work by Scorsese and De Niro as a partnership and it’s easy to see why. The film was extremely popular upon its release in the early 80s and won De Niro his Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the film apparently only took two weeks to write. This is surprising considering it’s a film critically acclaimed for its ease in terms of dialogue as well as its slick and impressive cinematography and editing. Another classic which brings back nostalgic memories and images of the 1980s.

17. The Lost Boys (1987, Joel Schumacher)

This cult classic is probably what Keifer Sutherland is best known for and the film is certainly well loved and followed by. My father in particular is a huge fan of the film and he physically wouldn’t rest until I’d seen it. Thankfully now I have and am glad to put it in this list because, even though I’m too young to remember the 1980s, it does have that 80s vibe that I hope a lot of these movies project to you as well as me.

16. The Blues Brothers (1980, John Landis)

The Blues Brothers, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, brought back the jazz sensation in this classic movie featuring cameos by the finest rhythm and blues singers around. The film features Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, James Brown and many more in this tale of two blues-addicts trying to get their band back together. It’s a hilarious screenplay with characters created by the stars on Saturday Night Live and it’s bound to have you roaring with laughter. A very nostalgic movie of the 80s and probably caused an increase in the purchasing of sunglasses!

15. Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott)

An absolute classic, not only of the 80s era, but of the sci-fi genre. The film stars Harrison Ford in the midst of his Hollywood success in the middle of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. It was nominated for two Oscars, not surprisingly for Visual Effects and Best Art Direction!

14. The Princess Bride (1987, Rob Reiner)

Probably my favourite family film of all time and certainly reminiscent of the 1980s, especially shining its 80s light through the casting: Cary Elwes, Christopher Guest, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal and not forgetting Robin Wright Penn who made her first film appearance as the Princess Bride herself. The film is laugh out loud funny throughout and I have spent many a Christmas watching this magical fairy tale and being sucked in every time.

13. When Harry Met Sally (1989, Rob Reiner)

That’s two Rob Reiner films, and also two Billy Crystal films, on the run in this chart, which just goes to show how powerful these two talents were in the 80s when they were each at the peek of their fame. And this film brilliantly captures the essence of their talents working as one in a personal favourite and a film that is very dear to me. Not only am I a huge fan of Meg Ryan, a woman who is the very definition of a romantic comedy heroin and what every woman wants to be, but this film captures the heart an soul of the 80s as the story (happening over a period of 12 years) manages to include every single second of the 80s going from 1977 to 1989! (Look out for some brilliant 80s fashions and hairdos!) I only wish I’d have put it higher in this countdown!

12. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988, Robert Zemeckis)

This is another masterpiece by the great Robert Zemeckis and it’s not his last appearance in this chart either! This film is critically acclaimed for its spectacular visual effects blending live action with animation a la Anchors Away! The effects were created by using a range of techniques, most commonly using robots to fill in the blanks where the animation hadn’t yet been placed. Another interesting fact is that Charles Fleischer (the voice of Roger Rabbit) wore the Roger Rabbit costume on set when providing his lines. This is another personal favourite of mine and even though it’s set in the 1940s it still takes me back to the 80s.

11. Beetlejuice (1988, Tim Burton)

This hilarious movie is another classic from Tim Burton who happened to get better and better through the 90s. Nonetheless this remains my favourite of his movies with the brilliance of casting Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, a raunchy and obtuse spirit who teaches Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis the fine art of scaring the living!

10. Evil Dead 2 (1987, Sam Raimi)

As if horror/comedy couldn’t get any better! This superior follow up to the similarly brilliant Evil Dead is a cult classic and the definition of 80s horror by Sam Raimi who is, to some, now better known for his work on the Spiderman films. The film follows on from its predecessor and the story just gets weirder wackier as Ash (Bruce Campbell) tries to escape the evil that lurks in the forest!

9. Top Gun (1986, Tony Scott)

If someone were to ask you which films reminded you of the 80s, you would eventually mention this. Top Gun is the ultimate love story which blends the romantic genre well with the action genre, and who better to cast than Tom Cruise for the lead? Of course the song by Berlin, “Take My Breath Away” made this film what it is and the song remains a karaoke favourite of mine!

8. The Terminator (1984, James Cameron)

This is easily one of my favourite science fiction movies and although the special effects may look a little ropey now-a-days, the story truly does capture your attention. The imaginative storyline and the superb dialogue makes the film easy to watch despite some rather poor effects and the audience’s imagination fills in the blanks. A favourite for many, including myself and a brilliantly reminiscent film of the 80s.

7. Dirty Dancing (1987, Emile Ardolino)

This, again, is a classic movie that is bound to appear in any countdown of 80s favourites. The on screen chemistry between Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze is amazing and the dances are fabulous! There’s nothing that I love more than a dancing movie and probably thanks to the craze surrounding this movie, that genre has emerged again with films like “Shall We Dance” or “Step Up”.

6. The Breakfast Club (1985, John Hughes)

A classic film from the God of 80s teen flicks, John Hughes! This film captures all personalities from high school and, I don’t know about you, but I could certainly see myself in one of those characters. I’m not telling you who though! There was the brain, the athlete, the princess, the basket-case and the criminal. All of whom where delightfully different characters brought together to create this masterpiece of cinema which should be in everyone’s DVD collection!

5. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986, John Hughes)

In my opinion, this is Hughes’ superior follow up to The Breakfast Club! I love this movie with every inch of my soul and it constantly makes me wish I was old enough to have experienced the 1980s properly! Matthew Broderick is no less than brilliant in the role and the film is layered with jokes and quirky characters that will almost certainly have you laughing out loud. Again, a must have for all film lovers and certainly for those who lurve the 80s!

4. Ghostbusters (1984, Ivan Reitman)

Another 80s must-have which is another for the whole family. This is definitely Bill Murray’s finest work as an actor with the classic delivery of the line: “He slimed me!” There’s nothing much else to say about it other than it will have you on the floor laughing and is a film I could watch again and again and again and again!

3. Indiana Jones: Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981, Stephen Spielberg)

Another 80s classic which has recently been resurrected in the form of “Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls”. This film won four Oscars for Editing, Visual Effects, Sound and Art Direction, and rightfully so. The film is brilliantly filmed with a clear high budget of $18 million and a brilliant performance by Harrison Ford playing the sexiest archaeologist around!

2. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980, George Lucas)

It’s difficult to express my love for the Star Wars movies, they’re too god damn important to me to put into words! Especially this one! A lot of people would say that the movies have gone off a little since “The Phantom Menace” hit theatres and I remember being very disappointed myself, but the original trilogy still stands up for me, and this is probably, for a lot of people, the favourite of the movies.

1. Back to the Future (1985, Robert Zemeckis)

Others may have chosen Star Wars for the number one spot in this chart but I had to choose this as it’s my favourite film ever! If I could, this entire chart would be filled with films from this trilogy, but I was on my best behaviour and only put one of the films in it. The film is truly an 80s movie with a brilliant soundtrack featuring 80s greats like Huey Lewis and the News! The fashions of the 80s are also clearly present, especially when showing the difference between the 1950s and the 1980s! Hilarity ensues! For me, this film canonised what a truly great film should be. It’s superbly written, brilliantly acted and directed and it really does have something for everyone! What more do you want?

Top 20 Movies of the 90s

20. Pretty Woman (1990, Garry Marshall)

A classic romantic comedy that barely makes it into this chart being released in 1990, and although the costumes and general feel of the movie is, to me, like an 80s movie, it is still technically a 90s flick. This brilliant movie kicked off impressive careers for both Julia Roberts and Richard Gere during the 1990s.

19. Fargo (1996, Joel & Ethan Coen)

A thrilling and humorous film from the Coen brothers, this was an instant cult classic and a stroke of genius from two of the greatest filmmakers of recent years. Winning two Oscars and being nominated for a further five Academy Awards, this film belongs in your collection!

18. Aladdin (1992, Ron Clements & John Musker)

One of Disney’s greatest achievements as Disney went from being humorous to hilarious with the casting of Robin Williams for the voice of the Genie. This is one for the whole family that certainly takes me back to the 1990s.

17. Goodfellas (1990, Martin Scorsese)

This gangster classic again barely makes it into the list of movies from the 90s but is instantly recognised as a classic of its time. Ray Liotta is brilliant in this story about Henry Hill, a boy from New York who always dreamed of being a gangster! And the story is beautifully told too.

16. Fight Club (1999, David Fincher)

An action thriller that packs a punch. This film is highly absorbing with a few twists and turns that will keep your eyes fixed on the screen. I don’t want to give too much away if you haven’t seen it but this is a brilliant movie.

15. The Nightmare Before Christmas ( 1993, Henry Selick)

Most would call this a triumph of animated cinema where others would call it Tim Burton’s best! This definitely reminds me of when I was younger in the 90s and I hope it brings back nostalgic memories for you too!

14. Toy Story (1995, John Lasseter)

Pixar’s first feature length animation with each frame taking 4-13 hours to create, but isn’t it worth it? This is the story that every kid told themselves; that toys come to life when they leave the room. But here Pixar told it in a way that made us want to hear it again and again, even through to adulthood I still love this movie!

13. Life Is Beautiful (1997, Roberto Benigni)

This Italian masterpiece captured the hearts of people all over the world in the 1990s with this tale of World War II and its impact upon the people and their families. A must see for anyone but be warned, tissues are needed!

12. Reservoir Dogs (1992, Quentin Tarantino)

Yet another fine piece of work from Mr Tarantino. This man can do no wrong in my eyes! This slick masterpiece was released in 1992 and coined a generation of parodies, copycats and homages that continue to be made to this day.

11. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991, James Cameron)

Although technically a 90s movie, its still reminiscent of the 1980s where the Terminator franchise first came about. A must see for all science fiction fans, although in the most part, not as good as the first.

10. Beauty and the Beast (1991, Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise)

Another appearance for Disney and this is a genius adaptation of the popular fairytale that inspired it. A magical adventure for the whole family and, again, takes me back to when I was a child and would watch this until I could watch no more!

9. Independence Day (1996, Roland Emmerich)

My absolute favourite alien invasion movie with a few possible exceptions, this is an incredibly entertaining movie that I could watch over and over, and I did in the 90s! Will Smith is of course brilliant and Jeff Goldblum is amazing in a humorous story of how aliens tried to conquer Earth. It’s also incredibly moving in some parts and could possibly have you reaching for the tissues.

8. The X Files: Fight the Future (1998, Rob Bowman)

Where would this countdown be without the ultimate 90s franchise of: “The X Files”? This movie was probably at the peek of X Files fame and recognition and came at a time when everybody thought it couldn’t get any better. And how wrong we all were! I could probably talk about this film for hours on end because The X Files is very dear to me, as I’m sure if you’re reading this and hence probably a child of the 90s, it is to you too.

7. Forrest Gump (1994, Robert Zemeckis)

Tom Hanks won his second Academy Award for his portrayal of Forrest Gump, a not-so-bright athlete from Alabama who stole the hearts of many in this story of his life. Beautifully filmed by the great Robert Zemeckis the film takes the audience through the history of America through the eyes of the innocent and childlike Forrest Gump. Incredibly moving and also holds one of cinema’s greatest quotes: “Run, Forrest! Run!”

6. The Sixth Sense (1999, M. Night Shyamalan)

This is a movie I remember seeing countless times in the 1990s, despite only being 9 years old upon its release. This is an incredible movie which manages to scare and move the audience in equal proportions. A favourite for many and amazing work by Mr. Shyamalan.

5. The Shawshank Redemption (1994, Frank Darabont)

An extremely moving tale of an innocent prisoner seeking freedom from Shawshank prison. Based on a story by Stephen King this is an affecting story, beautifully filmed and easily one of the greatest films of the 90s, if not all time.

4. Jurassic Park (1993, Steven Spielberg)

Steven Spielberg is the one who beat Star Wars Episode IV to the number one spot as the highest grossing movie worldwide with this movie, and rightfully so. This is a wonderful escapist movie that brings back memories of parents removing me from the room whenever anyone got eaten! Definitely deserves a spot in the ranking.

3. The Matrix (1999, Andy & Larry Wachowski)

This visual spectacular wowed critics upon its release, however some less enthused critics didn’t like its ‘too-different’ style. If you ask me, these people are idiots! This is a brilliant movie combining a terrifically intricate plot with amazing special effects and innovative cinematic techniques! A must have in any DVD collection!

2. Pulp Fiction (1994, Quentin Tarantino)

Probably Mr Tarantino’s greatest achievement, Pulp Fiction amongst Tarantino’s other work is a God among many kings. But this is the one that did it for me. This film canonised Tarantino’s status as a saint among filmmakers and it’s a title he holds proudly to this day.

1. Titanic (1997, James Cameron)

The second appearance from James Cameron with the highest grossing movie to date: Titanic. This is a beautifully done piece, subtly blending romance, disaster, action and, at times, comedy to create the ultimate entertainment experience. This is a film I watched repeatedly in the 90s, if not for the romance then for the adventure and the history and fact behind the story. It’s beautifully written by Mr Cameron himself and the on screen chemistry between all the actors is amazing. It truly is a film for everyone and it’s no wonder that it’s still number one today.

Top 20 Romantic Comedies

Romantic comedies have been around for longer than some people may think and with time I think it’s safe to say they have only got better. Certain ‘rom-coms’ as they are often called are iconic of their genre or even a symbol of their era. In recent years Britain has fired out some brilliant movies thanks to the production company Working Title and a lot of those have been of the romantic comedy genre and some of those may well appear on this list but this is a countdown of my favourite romantic comedies 20-1. I hope you like agree. [May contain spoilers]

20. Roxanne (1987, Fred Schepisi)

Romance: Daryl Hannah & Steve Martin

This sweet romantic comedy shows Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah in a convincing on screen relationship both as friends and more! Steve Martin throws some impressive jokes around and in parts the script (written by Mr Martin himself) is laugh out loud funny, and although it’s borderline cheesy, is very romantic in parts too.

Most romantic moment: When C.D. (Martin) is calling up to Roxanne (Hannah) pretending to be Chris. It’s beautifully written with some very romantic lines (although slightly cheesy) and is reminiscent of the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene.

19. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003, Donald Petrie)

Romance: Kate Hudson & Matthew McConaughey

A very funny movie with some rather romantic moments. Won’t make you cry or even pull your heart strings too hard but will have you laughing out loud in no time. Brilliant performances given by both Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson and promises a smile on your face by the end.

Most romantic moment: The bathroom scene.

18. Four Weddings And A Funeral (1994, Mike Newell)

Romance: Andie MacDowell & Hugh Grant

The film that made Hugh Grant the heartthrob that he is, and aren’t we glad? His character, Charles made every woman want to run into a nervous and bumbling idiot like him rather than the typical Clark Gable type, and I couldn’t help but hear the sighs of relief from men all over the world when this film came out.

Most romantic moment: The scene in the rain where Richard Curtis gained his title as God of romantic comedies!

17. Notting Hill (1999, Roger Michell)

Romance: Julia Roberts & Hugh Grant

Another appearance by Mr Grant (and not the last either) and another fine example of the work of Richard Curtis as a writer and of the production company Working Title. I have probably seen the film too many times but I just love the screen relationship between Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, and there are also some rather humorous moments with the brilliant Rhys Ifans. Again, won’t endanger your ribs but will leave you feeling great.

Most romantic moment: “I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.”

16. The American President (1995, Rob Reiner)

Romance: Annette Bening & Michael Douglas

A beautifully written movie which may well bring a tear to your eye by the end. A rather random mix of romance and politics for a movie which means your boyfriend is more likely to enjoy it with you.

Most romantic moment: The china room scene (or ‘the dish room’)

15. Hitch (2005, Andy Tennant)

Romance: Eva Mendes & Will Smith

A laugh out loud funny movie with some crafty writing, fitting in some more sentimental lines. A slick movie brilliantly directed for the perfect blend of romance and comedy and is of course beautifully pulled off by the wonderfully talented Will Smith. Eva Mendes is a perfect choice for the role bringing a delightful mix of comedy, charm and beauty to the role and it may well bring a tear to your eyes.

Most romantic moment: Will Smith talking through the peep hole on the other side of the door to Eva Mendes and not being able to express himself – also quite funny.

14. Run, Fat Boy, Run (2007, David Schwimmer)

Romance: Thandie Newton & Simon Pegg

A wonderfully directed film by David Schwimmer (Ross Gellar, no less) which will in parts make you laugh out loud, although as with some of the other films, is weak in parts. Well acted by Pegg and Newton and a brilliant casting choice for Dylan Moran who brings a huge amount of comedy to the film.

Most romantic moment: The balcony scene at the party: “I’d just settle for your respect.”

13. Big (1988, Penny Marshall)

Romance: Elizabeth Perkins & Tom Hanks

Much like Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks is also popular in this chart and although this film doesn’t focus solely on the romance element, it does have its moments. Written by Gary Ross and Steven Spielberg’s sister Anne Spielberg, this is a delightful comedy, brilliantly acted by Hanks and surprisingly the child actors are a pleasure to watch too which makes a nice change from some of the annoying child actors in Hollywood! So look out for more Tom Hanks in this chart…

Most romantic moment: When Perkins and Hanks dance together realising they’re falling for each other and Susan (Perkins) starts to kiss Josh (Hanks).

12. America’s Sweethearts (2002, Joe Roth)

Romance: Julia Roberts & John Cusack

I am a huge fan of Billy Crystal AND John Cusack so this film had to appear here somewhere! And although the film is incredibly underrated I found a place for it in this chart. The storyline isn’t so complex but then neither is that of most romantic comedies, and if I had one criticism it would be how unlikable some of the characters are, but it is also very funny in parts. John Cusack is, of course, delightful to watch on screen and very convincing as a romantic lead and there is also the pleasure of Mr Crystal for comic value.

Most romantic moment: The whole “woman by the pool” conversation between Kiki (Roberts) and Eddie (Cusack): “The woman by the pool that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with… that was me.”

11. 50 First Dates (2004, Peter Segal)

Romance: Drew Barrymore & Adam Sandler

Firstly I’d like to apologise for not having more Drew Barrymore here, I do love her as much as the next person, but I did enough narrowing down to just fit in 20 movies! And secondly I’d like to stress how much I love this movie! It manages to make me cry with both laughter and sorrow in one screening, which is incredibly hard to do. The film did well upon its release and was pleasantly popular among critics although never raved about. The film shows an appropriate balance of both comedy and drama, revealing the upsetting subject matter of short term memory loss and the affect it has on people around its victims.

Most romantic moment: Just when they’re drifting off to sleep together and Henry (Sandler) asks her not to forget about him.

10. Groundhog Day (1993, Harold Ramis)

Romance: Andie MacDowell & Bill Murray

This charming comedy follows the life of one man (Murray) who is experiencing the same day over and over, Groundhog Day. And after spending the same day with the same woman repeatedly, he begins to take a shine to her, trying and trying to win her over, each day getting closer to her and taking note of his mistakes he makes and pick ups that don’t work on her. His never ending attempts to get her into bed backfire though as he slowly starts to fall for her and his soul purpose becomes getting her to fall for him so he can continue with his life as normal.

Most romantic moment: When Bill Murray starts to tell Andie MacDowell how he really feels without realising she’s already asleep.

9. Jerry Maguire (1996, Cameron Crowe)

Romance: Renee Zellweger & Tom Cruise

This movie is a surprisingly good mix of the sports movie genre and romance with an element of drama too. Cruise plays a sports agent amazingly well and sways the audience well considering his character isn’t very nice for the most part. Renee Zellweger is adorable and perfect in the role (as usual) and the kid (played by Jonathan Lipnicki) could not be cuter!

Most romantic moment: “You had me at ‘hello’”

8. Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001, Sharon Maguire)

Romance: Renee Zellweger & Colin Firth

Yet another appearance by Renee Zellweger and also by Hugh Grant! And they deserve it! This film is based on the book by Helen Fielding and surprisingly does it justice. That isn’t to say that the screenwriters and director aren’t respected and able, but film adaptations are often not as good as the novel itself. This, however, I am happy to say, is. I read the book a couple of years ago and when I heard they were making a movie version my ears perked up and I was not disappointed. Zellweger is amazing as Bridget and carries off the English accent beautifully. She is truly an icon to all women and is played beautifully by the great Renee!

Most romantic moment: “I like you… just the way you are”

7. Pretty Woman (1999, Gary Marshall)

Romance: Julia Roberts & Richard Gere

Once again the truly gorgeous Julia Roberts makes an appearance, and what an appearance! She is stunning in this role which slightly shadows the damsel in distress story – every girls fantasy to find a guy who will take her away to infinite love and riches!

Most romantic moment: When Gere finally conquers his fear of heights to meet her at the top of the fire escape!

6. Sleepless In Seattle (1993, Norah Ephron)

Romance: Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks

This is probably the most famous romantic comedy of all time although in this chart it’s only made it to 6th place! I do, however, love Meg Ryan, love Tom Hanks and love love love Norah Ephron (writer and director). Again, acted beautifully and Hanks’ comic timing is brilliant with the tight script. Some men might need patience to watch it with you, but for us girls it’s something that will never get old!

Most romantic moment: When they FINALLY meet at the end.

5. Love Actually (2003, Richard Curtis)

Romances: Too many!

This is a beautiful story of how love is all around with a superb cast of British stars and too many romantic moments to count! A brilliant Christmas movie although can be enjoyed any day of the year.

Most romantic moment: Andrew Lincoln telling Keira Knightley how he really feels via cards.

4. Manhattan (1979, Woody Allen)

Romance: Diane Keaton & Woody Allen

Despite the marvellous performance by Mariel Hemingway, Diane Keaton steals this as the prominent romantic interest. With beautiful shots of the city that never sleeps and a gorgeous jazzy soundtrack, this is by far Allen’s best.

Most romantic moment: “You’re God’s answer to Job”

3. You’ve Got Mail (1998, Norah Ephron)

Romance: Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks

An incredibly sweet movie based on “Shop Around The Corner” starring James Stewart. Meg Ryan is adorable as usual and Tom Hanks’ charm and wit is set to 11. Yet another outstanding piece of work from Norah Ephron and I guess by now you’ve gathered I’m a fan of hers and of Meg Ryan’s, so no prizes for guess my number one romantic comedy of all time…

Most romantic moment: The closing scene: “Don’t cry Shopgirl”

2. Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961, Blake Edwards)

Romance: Audrey Hepburn & George Peppard

An ultimate classic from the moment it hit the screen! Inspired a hell of a lot of shopping in Tiffany’s and a lot of cats were adopted! What more can I say about it but “watch it!”? Whether you’ve seen it or not, watch it right now!

Most romantic moment: The final scene – in the rain!

1. When Harry Met Sally (1989, Rob Reiner)

Romance: Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal

THE best romantic comedy of all time! Written by Norah Ephron, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Will have you in stitches in parts but will also have you reaching for the tissues. A genius mix of comedy and romance with the king of comedy, Billy Crystal and the queen of romance, Meg Ryan. The couple are delightful together on screen and incredibly convincing both as friends and lovers.

Most romantic moment: The New Years party at the end: “When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Top Five Movies with Epic Endings

Reign of Fire

Not exactly the best movie ever made, but the ending was in a category of its own. The hunt for the final dragon is nicely suspenseful and the running scenes of the group splitting up are beautifully shot. With Denton Van Zan's final leap off the tower, axe in hand, head first into the dragon, and Quinn Abercromby's arrow shot that explodes the beast, throwing Quinn backwards, comes an ending that left audiences saying “holy [insert explicit here]!”

V for Vendetta

The buildup with the domino scene, the rallying of the people and the final fight just screamed “epic ending.” The musical score is excellent the entire way and builds up the scene with plenty of emotion and excitement. The explosion of the Big Ben to the 1812 overture by Tchaikovsky made jaws drop around the theater, and is only topped with the unmasking of the people along with Evey's final words describing V as the man in “all of us.”

Scarface

Who can forget one of the most quoted lines in all of movie history? With his end coming closer and closer, Tony Montana tries to defend the empire he worked so hard to get. Everyone knows he will die, but there's no doubt that it will be one crazy fight. With enough drugs in his body to fill the pool he falls into so tragically, Tony has a shoot-out of the ages, and left movie goers saying “Say hello to my little friend!” for over two decades.

Gladiator

This winner of Best Picture had one of the most epic endings ever, and this is partway due to the fantastic soundtrack. Maximus and Commodus's final fight is incredibly intense and gripping, and Commodus's last breaths (or, should I say, gurgles) are bittersweet as Maximus falls alongside him. But the last scene - Juba's final lines, filled with grief and hope, along with Hans Zimmer's “Now We Are Free” soundtrack - fills the viewer with plenty of goose bumps, and is one of the most inspiring, touching, and epic endings in a movie.

The Matrix

There comes a movie every now and then with an incredible story and revolutionary special effects, and The Matrix is one of those movies. Whether you liked the sequels or not, the ending to this movie is perfectly epic in that it concludes the movie with perfect execution (resulting in satisfaction) yet it leaves the viewer excited and wondering what could happen in a future installment. From the building shootout, to the helicopter rampage, to Neo and Smith's final fight, the action never lets down and only gets increasingly better. The final act, with the rebirth of Neo as “The One,” the death of Agent Smith, and the take off of Neo into the sky with “Wake Up” by Rage Against the Machine playing in the background is legendary, and arguably the most EPIC conclusion to a movie ever made.

Top five Scary Movies

The Ring- If you're into subtitles go for the original Japanese version, “Ringu”; or watch the American remake starring Naomi Watts, or if you're really into it, watch both. The Japanese version goes into more depth in terms of story, but the American version offers more explanation, so it is easier to understand what's happening. Either way this story about a reporter tracing the origins of a mysterious videotape after learning that all viewers die seven days after seeing it, turns into a race against time with some truly chilling images. Before you die, see The Ring.

The Sixth Sense- Okay, so most of us have seen it, but if you haven't, please do so right now. If no one's given away the ending, you're even luckier. Even if you've seen this film about a psychiatrist (Bruce Willis) treating a little boy who believes he see ghosts, it's worth a second viewing so that you can truly appreciate the way that director/screenwriter M. Night Shamaylan turns the screws of suspense, tighter and tighter until the story reaches it perfect, shocking conclusion. The brilliance here is all in the screenplay.

The Others- Even before creepy stuff starts happening this movie is creepy. It opens upon a woman (Nicole Kidman) trying to take care of her two children, while waiting for her husband to return from World War II. Oh wait, did I forget to mention that they live in a big, creepy, English mansion, the children are deathly allergic to sunlight, and all the servants have mysteriously left one morning with no notice? And that just the beginning of this good old-fashioned chiller, that makes use of disorienting fog, perpetual darkness, and above all, a heightened sense of anticipation.

Poltergeist- The special effects are somewhat dated, but this movie is just so much fun that you hardly care. It has all the good scary movie staples: a haunted house, a creepy little girl, and lots of supernatural happenings. The Free lings are a relatively normal suburban middle-class family, until odd events start happening around their daughter, Carol Ann. When Carol Ann disappears, and her voice can only be heard through the television set, the Free lings call in a team of ghost hunters to get her back. The movie has some great scenes (my favorite is the long hallway), some great lines (they're heeere), a few jolts, and a sense of humor.

Psycho- The original and still the greatest, no one did it like Hitchcock did. Avoid Gus Van Sant's remake (or copy) at all costs and see this 1960 masterpiece. Sure, everyone knows about the shower scene by now, but there are still numerous other reasons to watch (or re watch) this movie. My personal favorite is our first glimpse of Norman Bates' mother. Also take pleasure from the creepy house on a hill, and the screeching violin music. No matter how many times you've seen it, a return to the Bates' Motel is always fun.
