Bruce Banner is a role model. He struggles greatly with the fact that he has been exposed to gamma radiation, which changed his genetics and turns him into the Hulk. He studied genetics in college, and followed in his father's footsteps. He then worked at the University of California, Berkeley with Betty Ross as a researcher.
While doing research in forms similar to his father he meets General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, Betty's father, who worked with David Banner, Bruce's father who changed both the DNA of himself and his son, and notices Bruce's study is very similar in the regeneration of soldiers. After a freak accident, he becomes the Hulk and his chased by Ross who is determined to destroy the monster.
Bruce learns he changes into the Hulk when he becomes stressed, raged or excited. In order to combat this he leaves home, goes aboard, and hides. He buys a heart meter he can wear on his wrist to monitor himself. To make money while he studies and learns way to control his stress and anger, as well as ways to fight he works odd jobs.
Bruce does not like the idea that when he changes into the Hulk that he could hurt someone. He would rather rid himself of the problem. He cannot stay home because General Ross wants to dissect him in order to create soldiers. He does not want to cure him, and that is what Bruce desires.
With the help of Betty Ross and Dr. Samuel Sterns, they work to reverse the transformation. They are never able to finish the work because the "Abomination", Emil Blonsky, is tearing up the streets of New York City. Although the change is not reversed, Bruce is able to control the Hulk easier than he had been previously. Bruce will change into the Hulk if he can help save people from being hurt.
Although Bruce wants to rid himself of the plague the people call the Hulk, if he can do something good with his transformation, he will.
