Set in a grim area of inner-city Melbourne (yes, not all of Melbourne is as picturesque as the Aussies make it out to be) and the contrasting countryside of Victoria, Puppyis a love story with a very wicked twist.
Liz (Nadia Townsend) has hit rock bottom, and when tow-truck driver Aiden (Bernard Curry) finds her, she is attempting to take her own life in an empty Melbourne car-park. When Liz comes round, she finds herself not in heaven or hell as she imagined, but tied to a double bed in an old country home, next to a man she has never seen before but who is convinced that Liz is his long lost wife.
Soon though, the captive becomes the captor and we watch as Liz takes charge of the house and Aiden. It seems that she quite enjoys the new life she has fallen into, and will go to any extreme to preserve it - including lying to Aiden and the police, and murder.
As I said, if you like a bit of the bizarre, then you'll like Puppy - here's hoping that this will not be the last full length feature film directed by Kieran Galvin that we'll see in New Zealand. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - Oi, Oi, Oi!
