Thoughts on the movie:
I liked Scream 2. It was really good. I didn't like it better than the first one, but it was still good. I like how the plot is the same as the first one. It still had the mystery element to it as the first one did. The writers didn't break away from the pattern of two killers.
This movie pretty much follows the same formula as the first one. The difference is, Sydney is no longer in high school. She's in college now. Gale wrote a book about the murders that took place in Woodsboro and it was turned into a movie.
I'm glad that the writers brought back some of the surviving cast members from the first Scream. Some horror movies don't bring back the surviving members so you're forced to watch a lot of strangers in the movie. This movie has a lot of new faces, but at least the original cast members are still around.
Gale's character was just as mean in this movie. I'm glad that her character wasn't wishy washy. She did have a redeeming quality. She had a soft spot for Dewey. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I enjoyed watching Courteney's performance in both movies. She was the same opportunist that she was in the first one. I'm glad that the writers didn't change her too much.
I liked how Cotton's part was bigger in this one. He brought the comedy in this movie. His role was so important in the first move, but he was only in it for less than a minute. His part became bigger and once again he was a suspect.
I liked how Scream 2 has a lot of suspects. This one really leaves you guessing. There are so many people to choose from that it could be anyone.
Like the first one, there are senseless killings in Scream 2. You could clearly tell that some people were only in this to die. Two of the victims (Phil and Maureen) don't even interact with the rest of the cast. They are the first two who die at the movie theater. If you saw the first movie, then you know that they are going to die so I don't think I'm spoiling this. Were they just killed because the killer felt like killing somebody? They were in a room full of people, yet the killer only got the two of them.
There are two scenes that I could have lived without seeing. Sydney has a boyfriend named Derek. She was happy with him until the murders started. Once the murders happened, she pulled away from him. When he wanted to show her how much he loved her, he serenaded her by singing “I Think I Love You”. This scene horrified me because his singing was the scariest part of the movie.
The other scene I didn't care for was the rehearsal for her play. Sydney is in a play for the school. While she was rehearsing for the play, she thought she saw the masked killer. I didn't understand the point of the play so this scene lasted longer than necessary.
I think Scream 2 suffers from overcrowding. Scream had a small cast and that was good. This one has so many new cast members. As I mentioned earlier, I'm glad the original cast members were back because there would have been too many newbies in the movie.
I was disappointed by one of the killers in the movie. I didn't care for the reasoning that the killer used in the movie. One of the killer's reasoning was justifiable, but the other one was not. I liked the reveals better in the first movie. I also think that once the killers' identities are revealed, the movie is lasting too long. It takes forever for Sydney to fight off the killers.
Here's what I learned from watching Scream 2:
This section includes spoilers.
If you hear someone in the next stall making strange noises, don't put your ear up to the wall to listen. This is what did Phil in.
If your boyfriend/girlfriend wants to see another movie, maybe you should listen. If Phil listened to Maureen when she wanted to see the Sandra Bullock movie, they might have lived.
You could get stabbed a couple of times, but you'll still have energy to stand up on a stage before you collapse. When Maureen was stabbed, she had the energy to walk up on the stage and collapse. It's too bad that she didn't have the energy to scream for help.
When you're alone in a house and the killer tells you to turn on your alarm, you do it. Cici did this stupidness and it led to her demise.
Instead of telling your sorority sister that someone is threatening you, you stay in the house and talk to the killer. Cici did this too. She insisted on talking to the killer instead of getting off the phone.
You can be killed in broad daylight and no one notices it. This is when Randy dies. He is killed in broad daylight and no one noticed. The way that he was getting hacked up, there is no way that the killer wouldn't have got blood on him/her.
When in a car accident with a masked killer, don't check and see who it is. You just get out of the car. Sydney and Hallie did this when they tried to get away from the killer. The killer was knocked out, but they didn't take the opportunity to find out who it was. They waited until they got away from the car, giving the killer a chance to get away before they decided to go back and check. This resulted in Hallie's death.
When a killer is after you, go back to a place where the killer can find you. Don't go to the police or somewhere with other people around. When Sydney was running away from the killer, she went back to the auditorium at the school. She was going to find plenty of people there to help her… NOT!
You can be stabbed multiple times, but you can still live. Dewey was stabbed a lot, but he managed to die.
Here's a tip to discovering the identity of a killer in movies like this. Whenever there is a character(s) who is around for no plausible reason, he or she is usually guilty. This tip can be used in this movie to identify one of the killers. This person is in this movie too much to be innocent. More times than not, there is no such thing as an unimportant character. They are either guilty or red herrings.
Final thoughts:
This sequel was really good. It's not better than the original in my opinion. It's definitely worth the look. See if you can learn some things from this movie too.
