Mongol is a glorious piece of filmmaking fresh out of Russia. The movie will be in wide release in North America this summer - After June 8th until June 30th 2008 this film may be screened in downtown Toronto at the Varsity (at the bottom of the Manulife Building at Bay and Bloor).
Mongol
is a foreign film that's so good it was nominated for a 2008 Academy Award. Finally released in June, this film is only screening at a few select theaters in a few cities only, and in Toronto that means the Varsity Theater in the basement of the Manulife building at Bay and Bloor.
Mongol is an absolutely stunning historical epic by Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov. This movie is very similar to Conan the Barbarian, and I suppose Braveheart too, but in this case the hero, Temudjin (Ghengis Khan), gets lucky and marries a smart woman who actually saves his butt a few times - there's a twist.
Co-written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, the story centers on the most desperate years in the life of a boy named Temudgin (Odnyam Odsuren) who was born in 1162AD. As every schoolboy knows, that's when the Crusades are pulsating through the political scene in Europe. Now this movie teaches us that new heavy cavalry units also dominate politics in Asia. The story follows Temudgin all through his bitter childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny; he succeeds by not neglecting his personal and family life, which prove so important in his final struggle.
This film is excellent. Try and watch this movie in the theater if you can...
