In the Hallmark movie, “April Morning”, Adam is a metaphor for America’s growing independence. This is in relevance to how America and Adam alike have to grow independent very quickly. The movie is set in colonial times 1775. It takes place within the span of 24 hours. Adam Cooper is a young, bright, sometimes childish boy. In the beginning everything is fun and games until he has to toughen up and become a man.
Adam, like many teenage boys, is very childish in the beginning of the movie. He is portrayed as a slacker right off the bat when he is found sleeping when he’s supposed to be doing his chores. He also thinks down to the depths of his heart that his dad hates him, which is quite the opposite. Due to that, Adam is very intimidated by his dad, and sometimes afraid of him. This is very much like America in the first stages, it was under the control of the King and everyone was afraid of him.
As the movie progresses Adam is found to be more of a man and not the child he once was. One prime example of this would be when he is willing to sign up for the muster, and fight the British. He also feels proud when his dad accepts him as a man finally and tells him he loves him. Although Adam does run away when his father gets shot and keeps saying he wants to go home. This is ironic because he said that “this is going to be the best day of my life”. This is like America, because in time colonists began to be more independent and rebellious.
In the end of the movie Adam is shown to be a real man due to the fact that he has stepped up and fought the British like a true soldier. Also because he has coped through his father’s death and realizes he is the man of the house now, and he has to provide and take care of his mother and grandmother. America has become free of England and has the right leader to take control of it successfully.
In the end, Adam and America have grown from dependant and childish, to independent, thriving, wise, and grown. This relates back to my thesis that Adam is a metaphor for America’s independence. Both Adam and American have had to grow up very quickly, as will some of us one day…
