Summary
Two life long friends face obstacles that could ruin their friendship because of jealousy, secrets, and betrayal.
Here are my questions and comments about the movie.
Why was such a fuss made over Kit
When Kit arrived in town to visit Millie, there was a big fuss made over her arrival. I understand why Millie would be happy, but why was the town so happy? Kit told Millie that her books (she is a writer) didn't sell that much so why did they care about her so much? That was never explained during the movie.
Shouldn't Kit have known Preston
Millie and Kit were life long friends, but Preston didn't know who Kit was when she arrived in town. Preston is Millie's husband so why didn't Kit know him? I also find it hard to believe that Millie wouldn't have invited her to her wedding to Preston.
Was Millie jealous of Kit
Early in the movie, Millie is upset that the town makes a big deal of Kit's arrival in town. They ended up making up afterwards. Millie decides to confide in Kit about her dream to be a writer too. Kit seemed happy for her. Millie makes comments about being a writer as well as a wife and mother. Did she do this to make Kit upset? Kit is a single woman who didn't seem to want a family at first.
Millie and Kit's friendship
I wondered why Millie and Kit were friends in the first place. They didn't seem anything alike. I know that friends don't have to be alike, but these two don't appear to even like each other. Once Millie becomes a famous writer, it's obvious that there's friction between the friends. I read that the tow actresses didn't get along in real life. Could that be a factor for why they didn't seem that close? Did their off screen dislike for each other affect their on screen relationship?
Why didn't Kit tell Millie about Preston's feelings
Once Millie's famous, she begins ignoring Preston as well as their daughter. Kit spends more time with Preston and Diedre (the daughter) than Millie does. When Preston was ready to leave Millie, he confessed to Kit that he was in love with her. Kit felt the same way about him, but she wasn't going to pursue those feelings. She didn't want to do that to another woman especially her friend. Millie and Preston eventually break up. Kit lets years go by without telling Millie about Preston's feelings for her. Years later when Millie wants to reunite with Preston, he tells her that he was in love with Kit. This was a complete shock to Millie. Millie went crazy after she found out the truth about Preston and Kit. She accused Kit of taking her husband and child away from her. They get in an inevitable fight over it.
Kit's relationship with Rudd
Why was Kit's relationship downplayed? He is a man she met years after Preston left. She has been with him long enough for him to want to marry her. She refuses his proposals at first because she thinks he's too young for her. He's 10 years her junior. It's never established how long they were together. When he's introduced, they are practically engaged. I would have liked to have seen that relationship developed a little more than it was.
When Rudd was drafted, he wanted Kit to marry him. She wanted more time to decide whether or not she should marry him. While he was waiting for her decision, he falls in love with another woman in the movie. This was another relationship that was downplayed in the movie. He was ready to marry another woman within the three days that Kit wanted him to wait for her decision. Was that the way Kat and Rudd's romance was? It was obviously a relationship that meant very little to her because she takes the news that he's in love with another woman very well. In fact, she helps them get together. I doubt that a woman who really loved him the way she said she did would have been willing to help him get together with another woman.
Why did Millie disappear so long
Why was Millie gone for so long in the movie? Before and after Preston leaves Millie, she disappears throughout the movie. The movie is supposed to be about Kit and Millie's relationship, yet there are points when she disappears. She should have been in the movie just as much as Kit.
The performances
I thought that Bette Davis did a good job in the movie. In my opinion, she ran circles around Miriam Hopkins. I thought that she was over the top at times. The supporting cast was good too considering their roles weren't that big.
The movie
I thought it was a pretty good movie. It reminded me of an older version of the movie Beaches. That movie was also based on a life long relationship the same as this movie. You could easily forget that it was an older movie. It's a plot that could be done today.
