The movie is about an ex ranger from the U.S. Army who had recently returned from Iraq. Bale is no stranger to obscure roles like the one he played in “American Psycho”. He has a natural tendency to act these parts well. This movie simply adds another notch to his belt.
Christian Bale plays a character named Jim, the ex ranger. He partners up with his best friend Mike (Freddy Rodriguez) to supposedly find a job. Jim suffers severe mental repercussions from serving time in the war. With his mental state coupled with Los Angeles life, he runs a muck. A life of drugs and crime soon engulfs them. Putting a strain on Mike's relationship with his lady (Eva Longoria), further drama is added.
The actors in this film played their roles very well. Christian Bale especially made a realistic portrayal of Jim's state. Well scripted in believable fashion, it represents quality in many ways. Gripping drama gives the watcher a feeling of true anticipation. These attributes along with an amazing ending make “Harsh Times” a star film.
This movie is great for the timing of world and social happenings. Being well produced and acted makes this movie a must see. It is definitely worth the $3.99 for the video rental. Anyone possessing a sense for psychology and culture would have appreciation for “Harsh Times”.
