Reflecting on An Inconvenient Truth

Watching the Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore leads me to wonder whether those things are possible, or whether they're exaggerated due to things happening in the present.

What is Global Warming? Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and it is projected continuation. It is an important matter not only in a country but worldwide. Global warming has a serious effect on the planet, and it may get worse in years to come. In the movie “Inconvenient Truth”, Al Gore describes the causes and effects of Global warming. Pollution considered as the main cause of this issue. Greenhouse gases are in the earth's atmosphere that collects heat and light from the sun. With too many greenhouse gases in the air, the earth's atmosphere will trap too much heat and the earth will get too hot. As a result people, animals, and plants would die because the heat would be too strong.

In the movie, Al Gore clarified; “This is really not a political issue, it is disguised as a political issue,". "It is a moral issue, it is an ethical issue -- If we allow this to happen, we will destroy the habitability of the planet. We can't do that, and I am confident we won't do that”. Yes he is maybe right that this is a moral issue--- a man-made activity that potentially will kill all humanity but I would have to disagree with that. Why? Hmm. I would love to answer it now but before that I am going to give you my point of view regarding the topic. Everything that has shown in the movie is frightening, videos of glaciers breaking off, polar bears becoming extinct and cities underwater. With all these situations showed in the movie, I cannot help to ask myself so many questions, is this how everything ends in the future? Is this what they call the end of the planet Earth? Is it our fault?

Browsing online lead me to this site and read the documentary about Al Gore's movie saying that it has been a bit exaggerating with the assessments. I, as do not have enough knowledge about global warming, this made me more interested to know more of it and gather information as much as I can have.

With the information I have gathered, It's enough that I can express my opinion with the proof I have earned to make this reflection. To start with, the breaking of glaciers is normally occurring phenomenon due to the normal advance of a glacier. It does make sense, come to think of it nothing stays permanent in this world, and everything changes. Yes, say this is the effect of global warming but not to forget our history tells us that glaciers move, after all, that's what helped form our valleys and reshaped mountain ranges at the end of the last ice age about 10,000 years ago. I am not good in history but I am sure of this fact. Another clever use of images to manipulate facts that Al Gore has in his movie is that of a polar bear seems stranded on a piece of a broken ice berg, stating that polar bears are becoming extinct because of global warming. However, there are few things wrong with the assessment that Al Gore showed in his talk.

First of all, the region of the Arctic where rising temperature is supposedly endangering polar bears showed fluctuations 67 years ago but no overall temperature rise. Secondly, if the polar bear is in such danger according to Al Gore, then how come some recent survey tells that they are not declining, but rather rising in numbers? Thirdly, the idea of a polar bear “stranded” on a small block of ice misleading us, polar bears are excellent swimmers and they can swim for several hours at a time over long distances. They have been tracked swimming continuously for 100 km (62 miles). Al Gore might be telling us the truth about the causes and effects of global warming or climate change, although he is not but even if he is I would say he is a hypocrite for he believes in his self that everything he says are accurate and these terrible things shown will happen in the future. Al Gore is not a climatologist, meteorologist, astronomer, or scientist of any kind; he is a politician. Maybe he's only after the public attention. He might have done a study about the said phenomenon and let's just say he knows what he's talking about, but the issue is even if he has gained the information it is still not worthy to face the public and talk about these changes. A scientist study and observe very well before hypothesis is announced. Even if hypothesis is made, a scientist carries on with his observation. This is what Al Gore should do if he wants everyone to believe him and that no one contradict his hypothesis. Nothing settles. Close enough to the truth and yet so far.

Let's go to the moral issue. Gore has said that it is not a political issue; it is a moral/ethical issue. At some point he is right; humans are responsible for everything that happens on earth. Whatever the calamity that comes is the consequences that we're paying. On the other hand, it can't only be a man-made activity because as we all know planet Earth is not the only planet in the solar system that undergoes on a climate change. It is not proven that it all started from humans; before industrial sites are build global warming has taken place since Ice age. No one knows if this is all caused by human at all. A bit of info that we have to remember as well is that it is the Sun that determines our seasons and thus, has a greater impact upon the climate. There might have been an increase in the temperature of the Sun.

It seems worrisome that some are too eager to grab onto this man-made myth of global warming in order to make us afraid and guilty. Guilty enough to want to change it, and afraid enough to give up our freedoms and undergo massive financial expenses in order to do so.

Whether this phenomenon is a moral issue or not, if it is true to happen in years to come; no one knows but hopefully the scientists and people who knows well regards with this phenomenon can tell us how to prevent and stop this global warming in a convenient way.
