A lounge singer named Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a mob shooting by her lover and reports it to the police. The police try to get a court date but its months away so the police hide Deloris by placing her in a church as a nun (Sister Mary Clarence) so that the mobsters cant assassin her.
At the church, Sister Mary Clarence had a hard time fitting in because she was Black and all the other nuns where White. She was not accustomed to the rules and eventually, she broke a few which led her into leading the choir as punishment. The choir was not very sermonized but after a few successful performances led by Sister Mary Clarence, she started to bond. Their performances and community service made more people interested in religion and eventually they started attending mass.
The movie ended with the mobsters eventually catching up to Deloris but the police and other nuns rescue her before she is shot.
I enjoyed the movie very much because the morale taught me a lot about race equality and acceptance. What I thought could have been improved about the movie was the storyline because it was too predictable. A person is placed somewhere unwillingly as a minority but eventually bonds with the others just when they have to leave because the bad guys found the person. Just about when the person is killed by the bad guys, the good guys save the person and its a happy ending.
