The thing about movies is...
A good movie can take you through a range of emotions. You will become involved with the characters and feel as if you know them. You celebrate their triumphs. You are saddened by their loss. You feel their pain in a manner of speaking. It is not just the characters. The plot can excite you, mystify you, astound you. A good comedy will have you rolling in the aisles. A good drama will leave you in need of a box of handkerchiefs. A good romance will bring a glow to your cheeks. A good mystery will have you on the edge of your seat.
Memorable Lines
Every good movie has one or more memorable lines. A memorable line can make you think, laugh or cry. It's something you'll always associate with that movie. When you talk about it with your friends you'll say, "remember when he said..." Who can forget the line "They send you here for life, and that's exactly what they take. The part that counts anyway." from Shawshank Redemption? How about "What will I say when He asks me why I destroyed one of His true miracles?" from the Green Mile? Or "I don't think you're pathetic, you're adorable. Then, you're adorable then!" from The Kid? "With great power comes great responsibility" from Spiderman. "Life is like a box of chocolates, ya never know what you're gonna get," from Forrest Gump. We all have our very own personal favorites just as diversified as the movies we watch.
The Hero and the Villian
Most stories have a hero. The one person in the story you're supposed to care about. In the action and horror movies their always the ones that escape the danger. In the romances their always the ones that get together in the end. In the comedy it's usually the one all the bad things happen to but it turns out okay in the end. Some of these movies have clear cut villians as well. The guy you love to hate. In Shawshank Redemption it was Captain Hadley and Warden Norton. In the Green Mile it was Percy. Having a villian to contrast your main character is as old as the movies themselves. From the days of silent films, when it was the evil banker who came to forclose on the poor widow who couldn't pay to now. In some movies the villians aren't as easily recognizable. In some they turn out to be the hero or one of the heros. In this as in every other aspect of movies, everyone has a different opinion.
In conclusion
Everyone who likes movies has different preferences as to which kinds they like. What they want the Hero to be like. If they want a villian in the story or not. What their favorite line of the movie is. That's what makes the DVD industry so prosperous. We love movies and want to own them so we can see them again and again. Who wants to start an MLA (movie lover's anonymous)? Not me!
