Dead Man's Chest Hits $1 billion mark

The second installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy grosses $1 billion worldwide

Sixty-four days after its release (July 7, 2006), Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest's total gross has finally breached the $1 billion mark, becoming only the third film to achieve this feat (after Titanic and Return of the King). This Buena Vista feature, the second installment of a highly successful pirates-themed trilogy, stars Johnny Depp as the flamboyant Capt. Jack Sparrow as well as Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly, Geoffrey Rush.

According to boxofficemojo.com's latest data, Dead Man's Chest's total global haul has already amounted to $1,002,597,000. In the US alone, the movie has grossed $415,097,000 (est.), which represents 41.4% of the overall total. In the process the movie has also established a slew of box office records including the highest opening-day gross ($55.83 million), and the fastest film to reach the $100M (2 days), $200M (8 days; in a 3-way tie with Spider-man 2 and Star Wars III) and $300M (16 days) marks.

Around the world, Dead Man's Chest, directed by Gore Verbinski, has grossed about $587.5M (58.6%) to date. This total does not include Italy, which will report its final tally on Sept. 15. The final film, Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End, is scheduled for release in May 2007.
