10 Canadian Box Office Hits and Flops in 2008

I don't claim to be a movie critic but over the years I have watched literally thousands and thousands of different genres of movies. I like to think after watching all these movies that I can spot a bad movie from a good one.

This got me thinking about the movies that have been released in 2008 and how many of them actually turned out to be a flop. I have only written about the 10 what I thought were the most highly anticipated movies of 2008 that really just sucked in my opinion. So if you want to save some money and time you'll never get back then this might be an article for you.

  1. The Happening - OK Movie

I was kind of disappointed when this finally got released and I seen it. I figured with the cast of actors this movie had it was going to be really good but after watching it I was surprised how bad it turned out to be.

Without spoiling the movie for others all I can say is, I thought the plot of the movie was an excellent idea but the main characters needed to be more believable. It was a slow movie with a few good parts but it really turned out to be nothing special. I recommend if you haven't seen the movie wait till it comes to DVD or online because it isn't worth it. Oh there's going to be a second part to this movie to. Box office figures for this film were $1.84 million in the first weekend of release.
  2. Iron Man - Excellent Movie

Now I'm not really a superhero fan but when I seen Robert Downey Jr. was in this I had to check it out. After all Robert Downey Jr. although was addicted to drugs was still a great movie actor in my opinion.

In my personal opinion this movie had a little bit of everything from action to comedy to love it had it all. I found it to be non-stop action from start to finish and many laughs through out the film. I highly recommend seeing this movie if you haven't already and the kids will absolutely love it. The movie finished like there might be a second part I just hope they keep the cast all the same. Don't mess with perfection is what I say! This movie brought in $7.49 million in its first weekend.
  3. The Strangers - Bad Movie

This movie in my opinion was a complete flop. Literally the commercials were way better then the movie was. It was boring, acting was bad just a complete waste of time to me. I will give it this, there was some parts that kind of made you jump but other then that that movie was just to slow and not believable enough.

The movie ends with the possibility of a second part in the process of being made. I just hope if they make a part 2 that its way better cast and plot. I recommend saving your money and waiting for the DVD release because in my opinion this movie was seriously bad. This movie topped out at $1.15 million in its first weekend of release.
  4. Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Excellent Movie

I have always been an Indiana Jones fan since I was a little kid so when I seen this movie was been released I was so excited and could barely wait.

Finally a few weeks back I got to see it and I have to say it was well worth the wait. The movie gave me that same feeling I got when I was a kid watching it. There was a ton of action and comedy through out the whole movie and of course treasure. This is a definite must see for older Indiana Jones fans or children. Box office numbers for this movie was $7.00 million in its first weekend of being released.
  5. Speed Racer 2008 - Bad Movie

I and my 12 year old step son watched this movie and I must say we were both really disappointed. I'm not exactly sure what age this movie was geared for but it wasn't for us. There were some good parts with the racing but other then that we didn't like it all that much. You're not missing anything special here if you have not seen it yet. This movie can be considered a flop at the box office because it only brought in $746,852 in its first weekend of release.
  6. What Happens In Vegas - Pretty Good Movie

Now I'm not typically an Ashton Kutcher fan but I did think his other movies like Just Married and so on are pretty fu so I decided to check this one out.

The movie overall was pretty good and a typical Ashton Kutcher film but in my personal opinion it would have been better with someone other then Cameron Diaz. I just didn't see the chemistry between the 2 to make a believable unlike the other movie about marriage Ashton did. It wasn't too bad at all and is worth a watch but it isn't anything special. The movie grossed $1.61 million in its first weekend.
  7. Prom Night 2008 - Boring Movie

I'm a huge horror fan so when I heard of the release of the new Prom Night I must say I had high expectations from the older movies.

The whole plot of the movie was that of a typical horror film but I thought it being a newer version that there would be more blood and parts that make you jump, but there wasn't. Overall it was ok to kill some time but I wouldn't watch this again let alone pay to see it. Although I thought it was bad, it did bring in $1.25 million in its first weekend.
  8. Harold and Kumar: Guantanamo Bay - Excellent, Funny Movie

I don't even know where to begin with this movie. I hated the first “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle” but this movie had to be one of the funniest movies I have seen this year.

This is movie in my opinion is gear for adults and should only be seen by them. There is a lot of crude and sick humor through out the movie that children or young teenagers should not see but other then that it's a great comedy for adults. I would pay to see this again and if you haven't seen this then you must check it out as soon as you can if you're into this kind of humor. This movie brought in about $2.34 million in its first weekend.
  9. You Don't Mess With the Zohan - OK Movie

Now I'm a huge Adam Sandler fan and some people will disagree with me when I say this was not one of his best movies.

For those of you who haven't seen this yet, it's about a super commando from Israeli who fakes his death to pursue his dream of becoming a hairdresser making people “Silky Smooth“. Through out the movie you will hear that phrase a lot so be prepared.

Overall it was an ok movie with a few laughs spread through out but it just didn't make me laugh like other movies Adam Sandler has done. You can take the chance and go see it since everyone's taste is different but I wouldn't recommend spending the money I would just wait for the DVD release or watch it online. This movie brought in $2.97 million in its first weekend.
  10. The Incredible Hulk 2008 - Alright Movie

Now like I stated before I'm not a superhero fan but after seeing “Iron Man” and seeing the first Incredible Hulk I thought why not? After all, the star was Ed Norton and I always loved his movies.

I have to say after actually sitting down and watching it with my girlfriend's son, I was rather disappointed. I seen the first Hulk and didn't mind it so I really wasn't expecting much for the second but in my opinion it was worst then the first Hulk.

There was a lot of action and explosions like you would to expect to find in a superhero movie. It would probably be an excellent movie for younger children but for me and my step son it wasn't the greatest. Total box office gross on this movie in Canada was $3.07 million in the first weekend.

All box office numbers where gathered from tribute.ca and from the looks of things Canada's biggest box office hit was “Iron Man” which brought in a total of $7.49 million in its first weekend of being released.

The box office flop was “Speed Racer” which only brought in $746, 852 in its first weekend of being released.

So this is Canada's most recent box office hits and flops but the opinions of the movies are merely just mine so don't take offence.
