Pocahontas' Real Life

This shows the differences of Pocahontas' real life and the Disney portrayal.

The Disney portrayal and the real life story of Pocahontas are both very different, for example in the movie Pocahontas and John Smith were young adults but in real life Pocahontas was about eleven and John Smith was about twenty-eight when they first met. Another example on how these stories are different is that in the movie they sailed on one ship and it was called the Susan Constant, but in real-life the settlers came on 3 ships that were called the Susan Constant, (like the movie) the Godspeed, and the Discovery. A third example of how the movie and the real-life story of Pocahontas are different is when in the movie John Smith and Pocahontas met for the first time it was in the wilderness, in real-life the first time they met was when Pocahontas rescued John Smith from execution. A last comparison between the movie and real-life is that in the movie John Smith appeared to be tall and clean shaven, but in real-life John Smith had a full beard and was short.

I think the movie was a romanticized rendition of Pocahontas' life because the movie seems to be off in historical fact In the movie the real events that took place are out of order and not very accurate. The movie to me seems to focus on more of the Romantic aspect of the real-life happenings instead of the other crucial ideas, for example it doesn't really focus on the fact that Pocahontas and John Smiths' love also brought peace to the two Nations for a little while.

When I see Pocahontas and her people I think of them to be more of a Noble Savage then an Exotic Other. These Indians to me seem more like a Noble Savage because they are uncorrupted by the influences of civilization. Also these people live with the land and not against it. They treat all living things with respect. A good example of this is in the movie when John Smith and Pocahontas first meet Pocahontas shows John that if you treat the land with respect it will give you great rewards.
