Martin Seamus "Marty" McFly of the Back to the Future Trilogy is a role model. His best friend is a scientist and elderly man, Emmet Doc Brown, who invents a time machine made from a De Lorean sports car. He dreams of a musical career playing guitar, and being with his girlfriend, Jennifer Parker.
Marty oftentimes gets into trouble. He is often late for school and serving detention. He plays guitar in the band The Pinheads. He also enjoys skateboarding, and appears to be quite good at it.
Marty is not afraid to take risks, although he, like his father George McFly, started out afraid to show off his art because of the fear of rejection. Thanks to the help of the time machine and Doc Brown, Marty learns to overcome this fear back in the year 1955. Marty does not mean to, but in helping him to get back home to the year 1985, he changes his future for himself and his parents.
Doc Brown later takes Marty into the future to the year 2015, and due to a little too much interest in changing his future with Grey's Sports Almanac, changes the past instead. Marty learns that in the future, he does not make it with his music and that his life is one big disappointment. He comes home to a life that is even worse, when he returns to 1985 and the present is not as it was when he left. He and Doc Brown go back, once again to 1955 to fix it.
Doc Brown through a complete mishap ends up in the year 1885. Marty does not want his friend to be stuck in the past so he goes back in time to bring him back.
Marty does not like to be called “chicken” and has a hard time walking away. When faced with this, because Marty does not realize that he is not a coward, he takes unnecessary risks and finds himself in worse trouble. The Tannens in the past, present and future have no problem with causing this kind of trouble. Thanks to the help of his friends and family he eventually learns to walk away. This is his worse fault.
Marty learns more about himself and what he is able to do. He also learns that despite all he learns about the future, it is not written in stone as long as he is willing to take the risk. If anything, Doc Brown and his father are role models, because they accomplished what they set out to do. Learning the future is what you make of it.
