In the movie Castaway, director Robert Zemeckis philosophy on life is when man faces a struggle for survival, he will find the means to survive. The director conveys this by having the main character's plane crash and him ending up on a deserted island. On the island, Chuck knew that he had to either find a way to survive or end up dying. Chuck knowing that he left someone he cared for back home, knew he had to somehow find a way to get off the island.

Robert Zemeckis's philosophy on humans was portrayed by showing that when man is put into a life or death situation he will do all he can do to survive. He used many examples throughout the movie to further express his beliefs on this. One example that Zemeckis used was when the main character first washed up on the island, and immediately searched for others. Another example he used was when the character was searching for a source of food , and found the coconut. To illustrate mans will to survive, the stranded character was able to use a prehistoric technique to make fire on the island. The fire's purpose was for cooking, warmth, light and a possible rescue signal. A symbol of Zemeckis philosophy portrayed on man was when the main character went throughout the island looking for shelter, and finally set up shelter inside the cave. All of these examples that the director used to emphasize that man will adapt in order to survive regardless of any conditions. These details that Zemeckis conveyed showed that man will always find ways to overcome death.

The directors beliefs of humans was depicted by placing the character in a situation were his back was against the wall and he used everything he could to survive. Zemeckis used many detailed descriptions throughout the movie that expressed his view on humans struggle to survive. An example of this is when the character found the Fed-Ex boxes scattered along the island and collected them for later use. Another example he used was when the character on the island used the materials he retrieved from the boxes and made a fishing net . Another symbol of survival was when Chuck gathered a stick, sharpened it with the ice skate , and constructed it into a spear. He did this so he would have a way to supply himself with food.

Zemeckis gave the viewers of his movie many elaborated details about his philosophy of humans will to survive. The director portrayed his outlook on this view by having the character, Chuck Nolan, make cave paintings on the walls so searchers would know he was on the island.

Another detail Zemeckis used to further convey his beliefs was when the main character constructed a raft out of plastic from the plane, wood from the trees, and rope he made from tree bark to use this for his journey out to sea.. During the movie, the main character split a coconut in half and attached it to the raft, so he would always have fresh drinking water when out at sea. All the actions the director displayed with the main character gave the viewers an image of his philosophy on human life.

Director Robert Zemeckis's outlook on human life was when ever man is in a struggle to survive or in a devastating situation he will do everything possible to live. He portrayed this view by placing the main character in a plane crash, and ultimately struggling to survive on the deserted island. On the island, Chuck Nolan used many primitive survival techniques so he could be rescued and return home. All the details that were shown in movie, once again express the directors aspect on an individuals endurance to conquer life's obstacles.
